This story was so emotional for me, I love James Nicholls but yes, not all soldiers come back.
War is a very hard topic, honestly, and something that really struck me as very cruel you know? I don't get how leaders can send thousands away with a clear conscience. They're people not guns or only numbers.

Once again loved the story, I'm sad about her brother but it adds reality to the story. War is one of the most pointless things in existance. Thank you for a lovely story.

Yes, WWII I believe but whatever war it is, there are always many lives who were swept away.

It is bittersweet and it never works out the way you want it so it's perfect in that sense. Sure there are always happy endings and the brother comes home safely, but that is just by chance. He was just only a boy. A hard promise to keep, but still a promise haha

It was a happy ending for James and Elizabeth and sadly her brother didn't make it. It was touching to see that they kept in touch and supporting him for those three years that he has been gone has to taken some patience when it came to her. Great story

Well Andrew wanted to join the Army and taking Percy was a way for him to stand up because not all boys had horses in the village.
Hopefully both Percy and James will be fine :3

Such a sweet moment between the captain and elizabeth. I agree with Elizabeth, Percy is too skittish to deal with a horse like Percy but then again the army is always looking for new horses. I don't really have an impression on Andrew since he rarely was around and taking the horse to join the army was common back then. I mean if we were all heartless and didn't care about animals then anyone could turn a horse in like that.
Thank God it's the captain's horse, yeah? Percy is in good hands or hopefully in good hands.
