I guess, although I just double checked and realized California has laws against kids dropping out. Not sure if they're enforced, but 16 (which I think is the age you can legally drop out with parental permission in Missouri) isn't the age in California, and Johnny isn't 16 yet anyway. The government can genuinely fine a kid's parents if the kid stops going to school before 18. So I'm just not seeing how you can have it make sense for him to be a full time member of the band at this young.
