Hey, good to hear from you! So glad you are writing again.

And sorry I did not mean to nit pick. You are right - death can bring out the best and the worst in people. Unfortunately, more often than not, it tends to be the latter. I understand that everyone is hurting, but I get the feeling that Jeremy's parents are kind of trying to punish Veronica for not reacting the way they THINK she should. I really don't think it is about the money.

I look forward to your next update. Perhaps Veronica will find she has some pretty broad shoulders to lean on through all of this!

So even though this takes place in Texas....I'm just envisioning in my mind (read: pretending) that this is the way it might happen after a death.

As for Jeremy's parents, I've seen this play out. A girlfriend of mine lost her long-term boyfriend to a brain tumour, and one of the reasons they got married before he passed was because of his parents. They were getting all controlling about power of attorney, ownership of the house, etc., and being married was (sadly) a way to protect her. Death brings out the best and worst in people, I think.

And while it seemed like Veronica was making a bit of progress, the end of the chapter really threw me for a loop. I could not believe that Jeremy's parents would push the issue of being his "next of kin" and that they should have the bulk of the proceeds of the sale of the house. Has this girl not been through enough??? They were to be married, for goodness sake.

I get that they are grieving too - they lost their son and perhaps Veronica has not acted in the manner they thought she should - but could they not show a little more compassion? Is it about the money....or do they want to hurt Veronica?

I guess things are different in Texas, because here if you are in joint tenancy - where two or more people buy a house together, married or not - the property would automatically pass to surviving partner(s), regardless of how much each person paid into the property.

Either way, Veronica did not want the house anymore - it was THEIR house and would be a constant reminder of what COULD HAVE BEEN - the life she was supposed to have with Jeremy. She needed to sell it and try to move on. And although she did not do this for the money - although his parents may think otherwise - to have them take the proceeds would be a real slap in the face.

I really hope to see another chapter soon. It is always such a pleasure to read such well written work!
