Suicidal
Hilary's brother, Tom, commits suicide so Hilary wouldn't. He did it because she would have more sense than to make their parents cope with 2 deaths at the same time.
Hilary can't cope with the death of her brother. She can't cope with life. She can't do anything. She worries her parents, Sue and Terry.
She tries to find ways to cope with her depression. But everything in her life seems to be going wrong. Her only friends hate her, her boyfriend dumped her, she is getting bad grades in school, and she can't do anything about all of it.
