Green Eyes

16

Frowning, I closed the door and headed upstairs towards my room, ignoring the questions my parents were asking. I ran up the stairs and into my bedroom, slamming the door behind me. I turned around and screamed.

‘What the hell are you guys doing here?!’

Jimmy pouted. ‘That’s not very nice.’

I sighed and walked over to Jimmy, wrapping him in a hug. Man, Zacky was right. Jimmy’s pouts were irresistible. Jimmy grinned and hugged me tightly, cutting off my air supply. I tapped his back and he released me, still grinning.

‘Doesn’t your boyfriend get any love?’ I grinned as his husky voice filled my ears and I ran over to him, tackling him to the ground in a massive hug. He kissed my head and held me close, keeping me in his arms.

‘Boyfriend?’ Johnny’s voice cracked, and I looked at him and noticed his face was miserable.

‘Yay Kayla!’ Kaylee ran over and high-fived me, breaking the awkward silence.

I smiled and looked around the room. Kaylee was sitting on Matt’s lap, who was frowning. ‘Matt, what’s wrong?’

Matt glared at Zacky. ‘I swear, best friend or not, he hurts you I’m gonna set his balls on fire.’

Zacky gulped and everyone started laughing, besides Johnny who got up and jumped out of the window. I frowned. ‘Do you think he’s ok?’

Brian sighed and leaned over to pat my leg reassuringly. ‘He will be. He just needs time.’

I sighed and nodded, leaning back into Zacky’s arms. I felt so warm and secure in them, as if nothing could hurt me. How ironic.

Jimmy cleared his throat, causing all of us to turn around and look at him. ‘Anyways, as we came here to tell you, we don’t like this girl.’

I raised my eyebrow in confusion. Brian spoke up. ‘Zacky said he saw you with a girl today.’

Zacky nodded in agreeance. “I could sense she was a vampire. I don’t know what it is about her but I don’t trust her. She could be a nomad but I know for a fact that there’s no other clan around here besides us and Vercro’s clan.’

I sighed. “I knew it. I didn’t like her either. I could tell she couldn’t be trusted. But it gets worse. I have to go shopping with her and the girls later today.’

The guys all exchanged a look. ‘It could be a trap. Vercro’s probably set som…’

Kaylee interrupted. ‘Hang on, what does she look like?’

We all turned to look at her, obviously not understanding the relevance. Kaylee sighed. ‘I’ve lived in that castle for 20 years. I know pretty much everyone that has ever worked there.’

Of course! I smiled slightly at her. ‘Long blond hair, violet eyes. She’s quite thin and her name’s Sammi.’

Kaylee grinned mischievously. ‘We have a match.’

Jimmy clapped his hands excitedly. ‘Yay!’

I rolled my eyes and turned to face Kaylee again. ‘So she’s in with Vercro?’

Kaylee nodded. ‘Definitely. She’s not a very smart vampire though. She’s been after Layton for years. It’s kind of funny to watch.’

Zacky pulled me closer to him. ‘There’s no way you’re going. Vercro’s definitely planning something.’

I sighed and pulled away, turning to look at him. ‘I have to. The rest of my friends are going and I can’t let them get hurt.’

Kaylee looked at me. ‘Why don’t I go with you? You can just introduce me to the others as a new friend. That might stuff her plans up a bit.’

Matt growled. ‘Absolutely not. For one, there is no way I’m letting Kayla go. But for both of you to go – that’s just stupid.’

Brian nodded in agreement. ‘I agree. Kayla’s already been in enough danger once before it can’t happen again. We know they’re after her so we have to keep her away.’

‘I think we should let her go.’

We all turned to look at Jimmy, who appeared nervous at the sudden attention. ‘I mean, with us there of course. She’s right. We can’t jeopardise her friends’ safety either. So I say we let her go, but follow her around. Zacky seems to already have the hang of it.’

I looked at all of them one by one, judging the expression on their faces. ‘I agree. I have to go. Let’s just not make a big deal outta this ok? It could be nothing.’

Zacky growled, pulling me back against him protectively. ‘Nothing? Do you call what happened last time nothing too? There’s only one way I’m agreeing to this. We all have to be there. Just in case.’

I sighed and nodded. Matt turned and looked at me. ‘I say Kaylee stays here. We can’t let the others know that she’s with us. It could put her in danger.’

Kaylee grumbled in disagreement but was interrupted by Jimmy. ‘Shads, you’re just saying that ‘cause you’re whipped.’ He made a whipping noise and everyone laughed, excluding Matt.

‘I am not.’ He grumbled.

I pulled him in a side hug, which was awkward from my position on Zacky’s lap. ‘Poor Matty.’

Brian cleared his throat. ‘Actually, I agree. If Kaylee gets taken back we’ll have to go through the whole rescue process again. Besides, maybe she can watch Kayla’s parents to make sure they’re safe too.’

I nodded. ‘We can’t just forget about them.’

The others sighed and nodded, Matt making a cheering noise. I looked up at Zacky, smiling, and he leant down to peck my lips. ‘Now we wait.’

I walked down the road, on my way to Maddy’s house. She lived a couple of streets down so we were going to go together. I could sense the others’ presence around me, following my every step, there to make sure I was safe.

I stopped in front of her door and rang the bell. The door opened and Maddy walked out, closing the door behind her. We started walking down the road, towards where we were meeting the others. Maddy stopped and looked at me, her eyes showing anxiety. ‘Kayls, I don’t like this girl.’

I sighed and looked at her. ‘Me either. There’s something odd about her.’

Maddy grinned mischievously and reached into her bag, pulling out a pocket knife. ‘I brought this just in case.’

I snorted in laughter, partly because of the fact that a knife would do nothing to a vampire, and partly because of her randomness. ‘Maddy, it’s not like you’d actually use that on someone.’

Maddy frowned at me. ‘Well, you never know. I’m a cautious person.’

I like this girl

I smiled and laughed again, putting my arm around her waist and pulling her into a hug. ‘Sometimes I just love you Maddy.’ (And no, not as in lesbian love)

Maddy raised an eyebrow at me. ‘Sometimes?’

I laughed and pulled away. ‘Take what you can get, Maddy my girl.’

We continued walking, chatting occasionally about random things. That’s the thing about us – we always have something to talk about. That’s why we we’re best friends, I guess.

As we drew closer to the shopping strip, we noticed the other girls standing there, waiting for us. Brittany beamed and ran over to hug us both, bouncing up and down in excitement. ‘You’re here!’ she sang.

I laughed and walked over to Tahnee, hugging her too. Maddy just stood there, glaring at Sammi. I nudged her in the ribs, causing her to curse and glare at me. I leaned into her ear. ‘Try not to make it too obvious that you don’t like her.’

I could see Sammi grinning as Maddy grumbled something under her breath. ‘Shall we get going?’

A couple of hours passed as we shopped, all of us trying on new clothes and accessories. Maddy refused to participate and remained with a pissed off look on her face the whole time, despite my nudges, while I tried to feign interest in what we were doing. I hate shopping.

God are we nearly done yet? Jimmy’s just about ready to eat his own feet he’s so restless.

‘Tell me about it.’ I whispered.

Sammi looked at me, grinning evilly. ‘What was that, Kayla?’

I cursed silently. Damn vampires and their super hearing. ‘I was just talking to myself.’

Good one Kayla. Clap clap. Brilliant. Brittany cracked up laughing, and ran over to squish my cheeks again. ‘Yes, our Kayla’s a weird one. We’ve grown quite used to it.’

Sammi smirked at me, before turning to the others, letting out a fake laugh. Maddy raised her eyebrow at me, and I just shrugged in response.

Soon we were done. We walked out of the final shop, all exhausted from shopping. It was dark outside, and I could sense the danger. I knew they were nearby, waiting for me.

They’re nearby. Matt’s gone over to find them. Just try to stay with the others

I nodded, knowing that he could see me. Maddy turned to look at me. ‘Well, as fun as this was. Kayla and me better get going. See you guys later.’

Sammi visibly frowned. Obviously us leaving together was not part of her plan. I laughed internally in success. Sammi’s frown soon turned to a smile. ‘Mind if I come with you guys? I live nearby.’

Oh crap. Maddy frowned at her. ‘Actually, yes we do mind. So now, goodbye.’

I snorted in laughter and they all turned to look at me, Sammi looking confused. I smiled at them and turned to leave with Maddy, quickly saying goodbye to the others. Tahnee frowned at me. ‘Very funny you guys. Of course you can walk with them Sammi.’

Thanks for that Tahnee. You probably just put both mine and Maddy’s life in danger but hey, who cares right? Aaagh.

Sammi grinned in success. ‘That’s ok. Let’s go!’

She walked away, Maddy and me following reluctantly behind, giving each other a look signally that we weren’t pleased.

To my surprise, we walked safely all the way to Maddy’s house, Sammi leading the way, Maddy and I trailing in the back. Sammi stopped outside her house and turned to look at us. ‘This is your house right? Nice seeing you. Bye.’ She turned to keep walking, stopping when she noticed I wasn’t following. ‘You coming Kayla?’

Maddy looked at me. ‘Actually, I think I might walk with you to Kayla’s house.’

I silently thanked her. Sammi frowned. ‘Nonsense. My house is just past hers. I’ll be walking with her.’

Maddy frowned but sighed in defeat. She turned to look at me. ‘Walk with me to the door, will you Kayla?’

I quickly nodded and walked up to the door with her. When we got there, Maddy turned to look at me. ‘Sorry. Just stay safe. Remember – you can kick her ass. Plus…’ she reached into her backpack, ‘…you can use this.’ She handed me the pocket knife and I rolled my eyes.

‘Maddy you know I won’t use that.’

Maddy crumpled her face up in annoyance. ‘Yes you will. Just take it. I’m not leaving here until you do.’

That sounded good to me but I took the knife anyways, slipping it into my pocket. She gave me a weak smile and mouthed a good luck before going inside and closing the door.

I took a deep breath and turned away, turning to face Sammi who was smiling fakely. ‘Shall we get going?’

I nodded and slowly began walking with her, keeping behind her the whole time.

We were about two blocks away from my house when she turned to look at me, violet eyes now red. She smirked at me.

My senses were screaming danger, and I started running as quick as I could towards my house. I felt cold hands grab me around the waist and hold onto me, pulling me into the alleyway which was conveniently right outside my house. I always knew I would die in there.

I screamed but she placed a hand over my mouth, blocking my breathing. I reached for the pocket knife and clasped my hands around it, using all the strength I could to slam it into her side.

It crumpled against her skin. I cursed. I knew it wouldn’t work. Sammi started laughing and threw me violently further into the darkness. ‘Zacky!’ I screamed with all the might I could.

I knew he was here, but seriously, he was cutting it a bit fine.

‘Zacky!’ I heard someone mock. I turned to see Layton, grinning evilly. He turned to look at Sammi, smirking at her. ‘Good job sweetheart.’

She grinned like a love-struck teenager and I rolled my eyes. God, Kaylee was right. This was funny.

Layton walked over to me and grabbed me by the neck, throwing me to the ground. ‘That, my princess, is for escaping.’

I gasped as the pain ran through my newly-healed ribs, causing me to double over.

Don’t worry babe. We’re here.

Layton picked me up and began to carry me away, but stopped when something landed in front of him.

Layton chuckled in amusement. ‘I knew you would all turn up. But one appears to be missing? Wonder where he is.’

I looked up to see all the guys standing there, angry looks on their faces. Minus Johnny of course. Surprisingly, my heart sank in disappointment that he wasn’t there. I thought he cared about me enough to come to help me when I was in trouble.

Oh well, I had enough to worry about now anyways.

I looked up at Brian, and saw he was gazing intently at Sammi, who was staring back. It quickly turned to anger when Zacky growled. Figures walked up behind us and stood behind Layton, growling back at the guys. Zacky looked up at Layton, eyes glowing red. ‘Put her down now.’

Layton laughed. ‘Very well.’ He dropped me on the floor and I fell with a bang, yelping in pain as my body collided with the cold floor. Zacky ran forward to get me but was thrown backwards by Layton who seized the chance to attack him. I screamed and tried to get up to run over to him but a hand held me down to the floor.

Kayla, I’m ok. We’ll get out of this. I promise.

I sighed and tears began to run down my face. I couldn’t help but think of what would happen if we didn’t. I didn’t want to go back there and I didn’t want the others to go back either.

Matt growled and grabbed a brick, setting it on fire and throwing it at Layton. It hit Layton and he screamed in pain, falling to the ground. The vampire holding me ran forward to help him, trying to extinguish the fire. Jimmy appeared in front of me and picked me up, turning to leave, but he was stopped by a vampire behind me. Matt growled again and another brick went flying past, throwing the vampire to the ground. Brain ran over and attacked the other vampire, ripping through his neck with his claws and sending him to ashes. Jimmy quickly looked at the others and I could tell they were silently communicating. The next thing I know I’m out of the alleyway in Jimmy’s arms, being carried towards my house. ‘But… Zacky! Matt! Brian! What’s going to happen to them?’

Jimmy smiled weakly at me but didn’t stop running. ‘They’re ok. They’re just going to finish off the others and then join us. Don’t worry about Zacky. Vampires heal very quickly.’

I couldn’t help but worry though. What if something did happen to them? I didn’t want to be the only one who made it out of this.

We stopped outside my front door and Kaylee was there to greet us, looking anxious. Jimmy looked at her. ‘She’s ok. Matt’s fine. They’ll be back soon.’ Kaylee seemed to relax and took me into her arms, leading me away. Jimmy turned to leave but I grabbed onto him. ‘Don’t go. I don’t want you to get hurt to.’

Jimmy smiled grimly. ‘Don’t worry Kayla bear. We’ll all come back safely.’

He walked away, leaving me crying in Kaylee’s arms as she tried to sooth me. I could tell she was just as worried about their safety as I was.

She carried me upstairs and into my bedroom. Luckily my parents weren’t home otherwise they would have freaked out.

As soon as she lay me down on the bed my eyes began to droop and as much as I tried to fight it I quickly fell asleep.

I woke up to see green eyes staring at me worriedly. I threw myself up and into his arms, allowing tears to roll sown my face. Zacky kissed the top of my head, muttering to me soothingly. ‘It’s ok Kayla. We’re all ok. Everything is going to be alright.’

I snuggled myself further into his arms, savouring his scent. The door opened and four people entered the room, running over to my bed. Matt was first to get there and pulled me in for a hug. ‘I’ve got your back baby. Always.’

I smiled and hugged him back. ‘I know Matty. The fire was awesome by the way.’

Matt chuckled and pulled away, allowing someone else to get through. Brian walked over and lowered himself to my level. ‘Did you at least get to see me rip the guy’s head off?’

I laughed and nodded, pulling him in for a hug. He kissed my head and walked back towards the others. Kaylee walked forwards but Jimmy bounded in front of her, landing at my side. I laughed as Kaylee growled in frustration. Jimmy beamed down at me. ‘Told ya I’d get them back safely Kayla bear.’

I smiled. ‘Thanks Jimmy.’

He grinned before walking away, flapping his wings like a butterfly and singing softly. We all laughed. Kaylee leant down to me and smiled. ‘Hey girlie. You ok?’

I smiled and nodded. She grinned and hugged me before going away. Zacky pulled me back into his arms and immediately all my troubles went away. Well, all except for one. Where the hell was Johnny?
