Green Eyes

The next morning when I woke up, I was immediately startled by a pair of green eyes staring at me. ‘Zacky?’

We need to talk. Follow me.

I sighed and got out of bed, too lazy to change out of my pyjamas. ‘You know you could just talk. It may surprise you but that’s what normal people do’ I muttered sarcastically. I wasn’t a morning person, even if I was waking up to Zacky.

Zacky chuckled and sent me a smile that sent my heart rate up.

I know but this is more fun.

I rolled my eyes and sent him a playful glare.

I followed him through the house until we got to a door. He stopped in front of it and seemed to ponder about something before quickly opening the door.

I gasped. The room was beautiful! I mean, the furniture was average but hey, what could you expect from a house full of guys? What was beautiful was that one side of the room was made up completely of windows, which held a magnificent view. ‘Zacky, where are we?’

Zacky shifted uncomfortably. ‘I can’t tell you that. Vampires have a certain way of extracting information they want from humans. So, you could understand that it’s important that Layton and the rest of them never find out where we are.’

Layton. Even the name sent shivers down my spine. But why was I so scared of him? I mean, yeah, he’d tried to kidnap me twice but the others had done that too. So why him?

My thoughts flicked to the image of his face. When I looked in his eyes, I could see a danger no other being could possess. He was capable of things no one else would ever dare to do. Just by lo…

‘Kayla? Kayla are you ok?’ I snapped out of my thoughts to see Zacky looking at me, full of worry.

I forced myself to smile at him, which I found surprisingly easy to do. ‘I’m sorry my mind just drifted elsewhere.’

Zacky smiled. ‘It’s ok. Why don’t you sit down, we have a lot to talk about.’

I nodded and walked over to the couch, taking a seat on the left hand side. Zacky walked over and looked at the space on the couch next to me, moving hesitantly towards it before sighing and sitting on the couch opposite me. I suddenly felt sad and disappointed. I wanted him to sit next to me, heck, I just wanted him to be near to me. It felt like whenever he was close, part of me felt whole. Hey, I know that sounds corny as hell but that’s honestly what it feels like.

I hated myself for having such a stupid crush. I don’t think you could even call it a crush, more like an infatuation or a longing. All my life I had searched for those green eyes; ever since that night 13 years ago I knew that when I found them I’d be complete. But I wasn’t complete. Part of me was still missing, even though what I had been searching for was right in front of me. All I wanted to do was reach out and touch him, run my fingers over his face, through his hair. I didn’t know what made me feel this way. I had just met him, yet I felt like I’d been with him my whole life.

‘Kayla? Umm… you’ve drifted off again.’

I jerked my head up, to see Zacky staring at me, full of amusement. I laughed awkwardly. Thank god vampires couldn’t read minds. ‘Sorry. What did we have to talk about?’

Zacky chuckled. ‘That’s ok. I just figured it was time to let you know why all this has been happening to you.’

I nodded eagerly, earning another laugh.

‘About 20 years ago, there was a vampire named Degan. He was incredibly powerful, but only used his powers for good. He had an infatuation with humans. He chose to live among them and pretend to be like them, eating their food and living their life. Many vampires frowned upon this, but all knew they were not powerful enough to overturn Degan.

‘Degan became one of the best doctors around. It was there, at the doctor’s office, that he met your father. They immediately became very close, and soon he, your father and your mother were inseparable. When your mother was pregnant with your brother Kole, he was with her every moment he could. He even watched over her while she slept.

‘About a year later, when Kole was born, he revealed his secret to them. He expected them to be shocked, to run away from him in fear but instead they hugged him and told him they accepted him no matter what he was.

‘At the same time, a vampire named Vercro was rising to power. He was not as powerful as Degan, but was still a lot stronger then most. He began to collect followers, all the while making a plan to take over the vampire world. He hated humans. He fed on them not only when he needed to, but also just so he could feel them die beneath him.

‘When he heard of Degan, he immediately began searching for him, determined to add him to his group of followers. It was then that he knew he would finally have enough power to take over the whole vampire world.

‘When he found Degan, Degan could tell that Vercro was evil. He refused to be part of his group, and instead chose to stay where he was, living as a human.

‘This angered Vercro. He knew he couldn’t fight Degan, and instead decided that he would continue gathering followers until he had enough strength to kill Degan.

‘Others that had heard of his plan fled to find Degan, offering to join his side to fight against Vercro. At first, Degan refused, not wanting to harm anyone, but eventually as time went by he accepted them.

‘When the time came, your parents offered to fight. They wanted to stand beside him when he took on Vercro. Degan immediately refused, telling them it was too dangerous. But they didn’t listen. They followed him to where the fight was to begin, and hid out of sight, ready to jump in should the time come.

‘Vercro and his followers showed up. They easily outnumbered Degan’s followers, but still they stood strong. Degan tried to make peace, but it got out of control and a fight began.

‘Many were killed, but those who fought with Degan died gallantly. All the while your parents stood in the darkness, waiting. They waited while people fled from the fight, they watched as people fell to the floor.

‘Soon it was just Degan standing alone, facing about 100 others. They all came at him and he managed to get them away, killing them off instantly.

‘While Degan was fighting off 4 other vampires, Vercro seized his chance to stab him through the heart. Degan fell to the floor, and the others, assuming he was dead, left in victory.

‘Once they were all gone, your parents ran from the darkness and carried Degan back to their house, where they cared for him until he awoke. They poured the blood into his mouth while he lay unconscious, damaged from his wounds. Your parents feared he would never awaken, but about 3 months later, he did. He was not as powerful as he used to be, and immediately knew he would not be able to live among humans for much longer.

‘One night, he left your parents house and headed to the hospital where he had worked. He searched through the beds for a perfect person, and finally settled upon a dying boy. Me. He took me away from the hospital and into the forest, where he bit me, turning me into a vampire. When the changeover was complete, he taught me all I needed to know about the vampire world, and how to use my powers and control my thirst.

‘One night he came to me, telling me he had to leave. He said he had to hide away for a while, until he was powerful again. He said that by staying here he was causing too much danger to the ones he loved. I begged him to stay, told him I didn’t want to be alone. He sent me in the direction of Jimmy and Brian. Before he left, he told me I had to do something very important for him. I immediately agreed. He told me that I must look after your parents and your family, no matter the cost. He told me that should the opportunity arise, I should die for them. Then he left.’

‘For the nest couple of years, I watched silently over your family. Your parents knew who I was, and we occasionally talked, but neither of us had heard from Degan. I was there when you were born, in the corner of the room, hidden in the darkness. I was there when you started talking, when you started walking, I was there to watch over you and your whole family while you slept.

‘Then that night came. After discovering that Degan was still alive, Vercro began plotting revenge. He heard of your family, and immediately decided that he was going to do whatever it took to either make them tell him where Degan was, or just make their life hell.

‘Vercro sent one of his followers to your house 13 years ago with strict orders to kill or kidnap both children. He managed to kill your brother before I destroyed him. You watched the whole thing.

‘Ever since then, Vercro has been sending people to kidnap you and take you to their castle. That was who Layton worked with, and all those others the night I saved you. Along with the others, we have managed to keep you and your parents safe.’

Zacky stopped, and I began searching his eyes for answers. There was still something he wasn’t telling me. Zacky stared back at me, waiting for a response.

I cleared my throat and focused my gaze on the floor. ‘So if Vercro gets me, will he kill me?’

I felt a cold hand place itself below my chin and force my head upwards. I felt electricity pulse through me at the single touch, and I could feel Zacky shiver. I let him lift my face up and found myself staring into his eyes. They held anger, sadness and another emotion I didn’t recognise. Could it be love? Certainly not.

Zacky’s eyes held my gaze. ‘I would never let that happen.’ His fingers dropped from my face and I immediately longed for them to return. ‘C’mon lets go join the others.’

We walked out into the kitchen and I noticed another short guy standing with the others, chatting to Brian. Hmm, that must be Johnny.

Johnny POV

The others all began greeting someone behind me and I turned to see who it was. Standing there, beside Zacky, was the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. My whole world stopped. Everything I lived, everything I breathed was her. She was the centre of my world. I knew who she was. I’d found her. She was the one I’d been searching for. My soulmate.
