‹ Prequel: If your heart stops beating
Did You Get What You Deserve?
Chapter 16
Dad called the police. They said we should come down to the station, so Dad called Mikey to ask him to baby-sit Linda and Julia. Then Mum, Dad and I left for the police station.
At the station I had to talk to a police officer. The hardest part was not telling the story to a complete stranger, but telling it to my parents. The look on Dad’s face was something I never want to see again.
After the interview came the medical examination, something I had been dreading. The police doctor was as nice as anyone could be, but it didn’t make it any better. Finally, we could go home. As I curled up in the back seat, wrapped in a blanket, I just hoped that it was finally over, that I didn’t have to do anything else, that the police would take care of everything. My final, weird thought before I fell asleep was hoping that no-one at school would hear about this. Especially not Laura...
I awoke with a start, feeling something on my head. I jumped and strained my eyes to see through the dark. After a moment I saw James crouched beside my bed.
“James...”
He opened his mouth, closed it again, opened it and finally managed to choke out:
“I’m gonna kill that bitch.”
I smiled sadly.
“Leave it to the police, James.”
He sniffed.
“I can’t believe someone would do that to you.”
I nodded.
“I hope no-one at school hears about this.”
He laughed.
“That’s your biggest worry?”
I shrugged. He sniffed again and stretched out his arms. I gladly sat up and he hugged me. As he pressed his face against my head, I felt his tears trickle through my hair.
“I swear, Alec, I’m never going to leave you again. I’m always going to protect you.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the door open. After a moment it closed again. James smiled.
“I guess Dad’s leaving now.”
I clung to him.
“Don’t go.”
He shook his head.
“I’m staying here tonight.”
“Good.”
About five minutes later, Dad came in carrying a camp bed.
“You guys okay if I just set this up in here?”
I shook my head.
“We can do it, Dad.”
He nodded and left. James and I proceeded to set up the bed, and by the time we were done everyone else had gone to bed. Linda no longer slept in the same room as me. I crawled into bed and James turned off the light. After about five minutes I reached out my hand.
“James?”
“Yeah?”
“I don’t like you being so far away.”
After a moment I heard the sound of the bed being dragged along the floor.
“How’s this?”
I could just reach the edge of the camp bed. I shook my head.
“Can you... like... sleep up here?”
I heard a quiet giggle.
“Sure, Alec.”
I wriggled over and he climbed in next to me.
“Better?”
I nodded. He put his arms around me and I smiled. I felt so much safer, and I could feel myself falling asleep.
“James...?”
“Hm?”
“I... love... you...”
His arms tightened slightly around me.
“What?”
“Huh?”
He laughed softly.
“Never mind. Go to sleep.”
I nodded.
“G’night James.”
“Goodnight, Alec.”
