Something Wrong

Today I went a different route. I knocked instead of using the doorbell. Patiently waiting for someone to open the door for me. Where on earth could they be? The door opened. I perked up and my smile turned into a frown. Melly sniffed, wiped her eyes, and looked up at me.

Melly: what brings you to my casa?

She forced a smile. I looked at the ground for a second then back at her. The puffyness around her eyes told me she had been crying for a while.

Brian: I just came to see you...

She nodded and smiled.

Brian: are you ok?

Her eyes watered a bit but she quickly blinked that away and smiled.

Melly: yes just haven't been sleeping well is all.

I walked into the house. It felt empty.

Brian: where's James?

Melly: out.

That sounded empty.

Melly: you hungry? I was just about to make breakfast.

Brian: you know I am.

Her smile didn't feel as happy as it should.

Melly: I was going to make-

Brian: I'll eat whatever you make.

Melly: I can always count on you for that.

I laughed a bit.

Melly: how are all the guys?

Brian: good. We might go to Big Bear.

Melly: really?

Brian: yeah.

What's so exciting about that? Other than no people around.

Melly: I can't even remember the last time I went there.

Brian: before you married James. You guys should come. It would be nice to have someone up there who can actually cook.

Melly: to cook?

Brian: well yeah.

I teased. She threw a pot holder at me.

Melly: you're an ass.

She laughed a bit.

Melly: we might just join you guys. It could be a good time.

Brian: anytime with me is a good time.

Melly: not really. You smell.

Brian: do not.

Melly: what have you been up to?

Brian: not much. Just trying to feel at home.

Melly: must feel weird to be home after so long. I remember when I would go with you guys.

She smiled.

Brian: those were good times.

Melly: yes. Easy and fun.

She sighed. I frowned again.

Brian: I feel really irritated with people.

Melly: don't blame you.

Brian: mainly chicks.

Melly: that's weird.

Brian: I don't want to deal with slutty bitches anymore.

Melly: even more weird.

Her hand slapped onto my forehead. I flinched.

Melly: you don't seem to have a fever.

She grinned.

Brian: you're stupid.

Melly: no.

She gasped dramatically and her hand covered her mouth.

Melly: are you finally going to admit you're gay and in love with Zacky!

I shook my head and flipped her off. Her laugh filled the empty room.

Brian: you're an asshole.

Melly: I learned from the best. Don't worry I know you're not gay.

Brian: no I just feel.

I searched my mind for the right word.

Melly: tired? Used? Useless? Old? Bored?

Brian: like its all routine. Party, slut, fuck. Party, slut, fuck. With some booze in the mix.

I shook my head. She just listened as I continued.

Melly: you choose what you want to do. No one said that is how you have to live.

Brian: I know.

Melly: all you have to do is change the routine.

Brian: yeah.

My plate was empty, hers barely touched. I stabbed my fork into her waffle.

Brian: hope you don't mind.

Melly: not at all. I'm not that hungry.

Brian: I can tell. Are you sure you're ok.

Her brown eyes opened and closed. Fighting to tell me something. A sadness washed over her. It made me sad and I had no idea why.

Brian: you can tell me.

Why is it, right when someone is going to tell you something, you know is important, its intervened. Her eyes looked away from me and she listened.

Brian: Melly?

She smiled weakly and James came strutting into the kitchen.

Brian: hey man.

James: Brian, welcome home.

We hugged. Melly went to washing dishes.

Brian: thanks.

James: what's up? How was the tour?

Brian: fun you know. You?

James: just working. How are the guys?

Brian: good they're all good. Me and Matt are actually trying to get some of us together to go up to Big Bear. I told Melly, you two should come.

James: definitely.

Melly came and sat next to him.

James: that sounds like it would be fun. You up for going to Big Bear?

Melly: yes. I think it would be very good.

He grabbed her hand. The tone she had was weird.

Brian: I'm going to head out. Thanks for breakfast and everything.

Melly: not a problem.

James: just let us know about Big Bear and yeah.

Brian: yeah man. I'll give you a call when we figure all the shit out.

Melly: I'll walk you out.

We stayed silent till we got to my car.

Brian: thanks again.

Melly: you know I love when you visit.

Brian: yeah. Melly you would let me know if something was wrong right?

Melly: if there was yes.

I sighed.

Brian: fine. I'll see you later.

She waved as I pulled out of the drive way. When I got home I sat on the beach for a long time. I've never seen my cousin so in distress. Well I can't help her if she doesn't tell me what's wrong. So there's no use on lingering on that matter. Wind blew lightly, causing my hair to flap every which way. The water wasn't in a very good mood today. It was dark.

Brian: what do you think she's doing? I don't fucking know. She is a married woman, so I should let her go. There's nothing to let go. She's not yours. Exactly so just stop. Yet... No. Don't even go there. Jenn is a happily married woman. Plus I'm not her type.

I picked up a rock and threw it into the water.

Brian: I need a drink.

My home is well stocked with whatever poison I crave. Many different shaped bottles. Colors. Tastes. Its just a matter of my current flavor. In the midst of pouring myself a drink, the door bell rang through out my empty house. Irritating. Cup in hand I made my way to my door.

Brian: what the fuck do you want Zack?

Zacky: oOoO...moody.

He pushed passed me.

Brian: please come on in.

Zacky: what are you doing?

Brian: drinking.

Zacky: I was going to ask if you wanted to join me and Matt to eat.

Brian: couldn't you have just called?

Zacky: no pestering you is so much better.

Brian: ofcourse it is.

Zacky: you know its my life mission. Emission. Mission. Piss Brian off.

A small smile made its way on my face.

Zacky: what you say man?

Brian: sure. It will be better than getting drunk by myself.

My eyes scanned the restaurant. All the same.

Matt: what did you do today man?

Brian: I went to see Melly. She says hello.

Zacky: I should go visit her.

Brian: yeah.

Matt: how is James.

Brian: fine. I invited them to Big Bear with us.

Matt: right on that would be like old times.

I nodded.

Brian: do any of you have Jacoby's house number?

What am I doing?

Zacky: what for?

I shrugged.

Brian: just to have.

Matt: he isn't even home.

Zacky: yeah call his cell.

Brian: do you or do you not have it?

They gave me a strange look.

Matt: yeah man.

He pulled his phone out and gave it to me.

Zacky: dude his wife is a looker. Hot little thing.

Matt: yeah she's alright.

Zacky: alright? No Matt she's fucking hot.

Matt laughed a bit.

Matt: you think anything with tits is hot.

Zacky: and home girl has some nice ones. Perfect even. Just the right size.

He shook his head.

Matt: I've always said more than a handful is a waste.

Zacky: whatever dude. What do you think Brian?

Brian: I don't know. I didn't really look.

If I told the truth.

Zacky: you guys aren't seriously trying to tell me she isn't hot.

Brian: we didn't say that.

Zacky: then you agree. She's hot.

I nodded but the word didn't do the job. Not even close. Beautiful wasn't enough. But I've mentioned that before.

Matt: yeah she's alright.

Zacky: I can't believe you just keep saying alright.

Matt: I think she's sweet and nice and not my type.

Zacky: not your type?

Matt: she's married.

My eyes closed at that disgusting thought.

Zacky: and if she wasn't then she'd be your type.

Matt: no.

He shrugged.

Zacky: why not.

Matt: I don't know. To much of a friend type vibe.

Zacky: whatever she's got an amazing rack and I'd fuck her.

Brian: shut up. That's not going to happen.

Zacky: man calm down Gates we're just talking.

Matt: you ok?

Brian: yes just got a lot of shit in my mind.

Like what stupid thing I'm going todo with that phone number.
