The Thoughts of One Moment

Chapter Five

I rubbed my forehead as I shuffled through some of the photo’s I’d taken earlier that week. The one’s of the Norrington’s had turned out decent enough, definitely worth the money they paid. Of course, any picture developed in Richard’s studio was bound to turn out good..as long as the person knew what they were doing.

I glanced at Richard. I could see him through his office’s glass door. Nikki was standing over him, nodding. She was the most “experienced” photographer, you could say that worked here. She was obviously the best and I was a huge fan of her work, so naturally, I was very intimidated by her, yet also very lucky to have the chance to work with her.

I tossed the photo’s back on the desk and looked across the room, staring at nothing really. It wasn’t until Desiree tapped me on the shoulder to bring me back did I realize I was spacing. “Guess what? Oh my God, guess what?” She bounced. “What?” I shrugged. “Nikki’s partner is sick from food poisoning!” I looked at her strangely.

“Isn’t that great?” The look continued. “I guess..” I trailed. “No like, I’m her new partner, as long as her current one is sick anyways.” I smiled and congratulated her. “I know isn't it great. The first thing we get to do is take some pics of like this band or something.” I nodded, still smiling. I didn’t care much.

She went away finally to go brag to her friends about the deal when I caught a glimpse of Richard in his office. I guess I should ask him now. I pulled myself up from my chair and knocked on his door before entering.

“The Norrington’s pictures are ready, do you want me to give ‘em a call?” I asked, waving the dark yellow folder in the air. He nodded.

Okay. I went back to my desk and saw Allison sitting on my desk. “What are you doing here. I’m trying to work.” I said, sitting back down and grabbing the phone. She looked through the picture’s of the family when she asked me who the boy was. “His name’s Skylar-Yeah, hi, um, this is Rikki Bryant, your photographer.” I skipped to once the line picked up.

Allison pointed to him and whispered that she thought he was cute. I told her that he was way to young for her and listen as the dad asked if anything was wrong. “No, nothing’s wrong with them. Um, they’re done and ready for you to pick up. Just come by anytime between 8 am and 5 pm and we’ll have them. Un-huh, bye.” Click.

I sighed as I saw Allison checking her nails. “Do you have to be sitting on my desk to be doing that?” I asked. Really, that was the one thing she did most that annoyed me. She made a face and stopped to ask what I planned on doing next. “I was gonna go grab something to eat since I skipped lunch.” I told her. “Ooh, with Gerard.”

“Whose Gerard?” I turn to hear Richard ask. “No one.” I rolled my eyes, grabbing my bag and standing up. “He’s Rikki’s boyfriend.” Allison said. My shoulders tensed as I pushed open the doors.

I stopped by a Starbucks on my way back when Richard called. He wanted me to take another family photo, but this time of the Jefferson’s. “I thought they were Desiree's clients.”
“They were, but Nikki took Desiree out to practice more so the photo shot would be perfect. So please?”
“Yeah no, I hate the Jefferson’s you know that.”
“They’re at Central Park.” Click. Why did he have to be such a prick at work but outside, a complete and total douche bag. This is why you never work under one of your friends.

I met the family at Central Park. “Are you the photographer?” The woman who I could tell had undergone way too much plastic surgery asked. I nodded, holding up my bag with my camera in it.

“Good. I want to have it so that you can see the bridge between my husband and me.” Her makeup caked face said. “Okay.” I said getting out my camera and the stand. Her kids walked over to stand by her mom and one of them kicked the stand. I hate this family.

I placed the camera on the stand and angled it. “Would you hurry up, we have to be somewhere.” The lady said. I shook my head and snapped the photo and then as if on cue, the mother started to complain about the flash being so bright. I somehow managed to get a picture without the lens of my camera breaking.

“What’s your name.” Her makeup asked. “Rikki Bryant.” “Ugh, remind me later to complain to the studio about her.” The lady sighed. I widened my eyes. “Can we go to the concert now, MCR’s gonna be starting any minute now and I really don’t wanna waste these backstage passes.” The teenage girl asked. They left.
...
I returned to the studio only to get my things. Never again was I doing a double shift or at least never covering for Desiree again. By the time I had gotten home, I was far to tired to care that MCR was playing or even that I’d promised to come after work. I just, I really just wanted to sleep and forget about the horrible day I had. Its not like Gerard even expected to see me there, after all, I did tell him I had to work. So he should understand, right?
