It Wasn't Meant To Turn Out Like This

Typical Man

“How could he forget?” Mayza asked herself as she stood in the shower Sunday morning, massaging shampoo through her thick hair. “The way he acts, you’d think he’d always remember the day we began dating. But, no, he’s a typical man, forgetful and horny.”

Mayza couldn’t help feeling a little bummed at the thought of it. Today was her and Brian’s one-year anniversary. It also happened to be the last day of her three day weekend. Much to her dismay, Brian hadn’t mentioned the impending anniversary once in the past two weeks. Mayza couldn’t help but feel that Brian had completely forgotten, no matter how typical and cliché it was for him to forget.

Mayza climbed out of the shower, grabbing a clean towel to dry herself. She wouldn’t even see him very much that day; he had already left to go to the studio for a rare Sunday session with the band. The fact that he’d agreed to go to the studio on the one Sunday that was their anniversary gave Mayza very little doubt that Brian had, indeed, forgotten.

Mayza glanced over in the long mirror hanging above the counter as she slid into her underwear and bra. She froze and slowly straightened, peering closely at something on her hip that she saw in the reflection. It was small and brown, looking almost like a birthmark or a very large mole, and it was in the shape of a lopsided heart drawn by a kindergartener. But Mayza had no birthmark there.

Mayza gasped, looking down to investigate the marking closer. She ran her fingertip across it: it was slightly raised and very smooth. Mayza bit her bottom lip, taking deep breaths to keep from panicking. The brown spot could only mean one thing.

“Oh, but how the hell do I tell Brian?” Mayza groaned, quickly putting on the rest of her clothes.

She contemplated that as she walked downstairs and into the kitchen for breakfast. She stopped abruptly in the doorway, a small smile working its way onto her face at the sight of a vase full of a dozen roses sitting on the kitchen table. A piece of paper sat on the table in front of the vase. Mayza stepped forward and picked it up. It was from Brian.

Baby,

I know you’re freaking out about the fact that I haven’t mentioned our anniversary. Stop freaking out. I didn’t forget. I just wanted it to be a surprise.

I’ve booked us a table at the Seaside Restaurant tonight. I hope I’ve given you enough warning to find yourself something nice to wear—and maybe something nice to wear underneath. Be ready by 7.

I love you.

Brian

Mayza smiled wider and leaned down to smell the roses. Tonight. She would tell him tonight. It would be perfect and hopefully he would react well enough that the news wouldn’t ruin their night. Or worse...their relationship.
