Love Song

Chapter 14: My Unbelievable Song

Amy

For the last few weeks of school, I’d noticed that Audrey was showing Peter off as her new little boy toy, as Jordan always called Audrey’s boyfriends. Audrey would walk around campus with Peter, her arm looped with his. She would look at me and smile smugly like I gave a crap. Peter wouldn’t even turn his head to see who Audrey was smiling at. He must’ve known it was me.

His apology e-mails and numerous phone calls had stopped but he didn’t know about Sean and I. We weren’t as open and public about our relationship as everyone else was. Something in me wanted to rub it in Audrey’s face that I’d moved on. But if I did, she’d go straight to Peter. Why would I care if Peter knew? I have no idea. But I know I did care. It sucked.

But I couldn’t focus on that. Tia called me around 4:00 PM telling me that Jordan wasn’t feeling well and Josh, Zakk, and her were at Jordan’s house making her dinner. Tia had no idea what Jordan was sick with, and Josh wasn’t telling her. And Zakk seemed to know.

I had plans with Sean that night. But Jordan cancelled things all the time for me. I had to do the same for her right?

“Hi Amy!” Tia said excitedly when I got to Jordan’s new house.

“Is Jordan ok?” I asked, neglecting to say “hello” back to her.

“She’s still sleeping. Josh and Zakk are in a really bad mood.” Tia said softly, so only I could hear her.

An hour after I got there, I heard Jordan coming down the stairs. She didn’t even look sick, she just looked tired. I glanced at Tia, who I knew hadn’t noticed that minor detail

“Jordan!” she squealed, throwing her arms around Jordan.

“Hi.” Jordan chuckled, returning Tia’s hug.

“Josh said you weren’t feeling well, so we decided to help you out and make dinner.” Tia explained. I finished added the last spice to the raw steaks and I picked up the serving plate.

“Oh. He did?” Jordan mumbled, glancing at Josh, who wasn’t paying attention to anything but the red wine vinegar he was adding to the salad dressing.

“Yeah. Tia called us and I cancelled my plans with Sean to come down here.” I said as I handed Zakk the plate of steaks.

“Oh, you shouldn’t have.” Jordan mumbled as she started fidgeting.

“We don’t mind Jordan. Just relax.” Zakk said rudely as he walked out of the back door.

“I’m feeling much better, maybe I could-”

“Don’t.” Josh snapped. Tia and I glanced at Jordan and Josh, then at the back door that was slowly closing.

“Something is off with the three of you.” I observed.

“We’re fine.” Josh said quietly.

“Are you sure?” Tia asked. Josh picked up the bowl of salad and looked at all three of us.

“Yes.” he grumbled, storming out of the kitchen and almost ramming into Jordan.

“I…should go take a shower.” Jordan mumbled as she walked away. I wanted to know what the hell was going on. I knew Josh wouldn’t tell me. I figured maybe if I bothered Zakk enough, he’d spill. I walked outside, the setting sun turning the sky orange. I walked over to the barbecue.

“So Zakk…you seem to know why everyone is so awkward.” I said casually.

“I’m not telling you Amy.” Zakk snapped, not even looking at me.

“Come on. What did Jordan do THIS time to make you mad?” I scoffed.

“Amy, you don’t know what you’re talking about so just leave it alone.” Zakk snarled.

“My god Zakk you always overreact when it comes to Jordan.” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Amy, just leave it alone.” he growled.

“No, I’m not leaving it alone. I want to know what Jordan possibly could’ve done this time to make you mad-”

“I’M NOT OVERREACTING ABOUT THIS AMY!” he yelled.

“If you weren’t, you would tell me.” I mumbled.

“You wanna know? Fine!” he slammed a finished steak on the serving plate and turned his body to me.

“Jordan did pot ok? She did pot.” he snapped.

“She did…pot?” I whispered. “How did she get it?”

“How should I know?” Zakk snapped. I walked slowly back into the house. I couldn’t believe anything I was hearing. Jordan? Doing pot? Maybe Josh and Zakk had it wrong. I stared at Josh, who had his arms folded across his chest, staring at me.

“You know…don’t you?” he mumbled.

“Yeah. But that’s impossible. Maybe you had it wrong.” I said softly.

“Amy I would love to say that was true. I would be happier being wrong. But I’m not. I saw her inhale that joint. She was laughing at her ceiling when ceilings as you know, aren’t funny.” he explained.

“Why would she do this?” I asked, on the edge of tears, although I didn’t know why.

“Mr. Block…didn’t you see that little gumball machine ring on her finger?” he said.

“I’ve gotta get out of here.” I sighed, rubbing the tears away from my eyes. I didn’t know if I was mad at her or if I wanted nothing more to do with her. Maybe this was just one time. Maybe she wouldn’t do it again. I had to hope that she wouldn’t do it again.

“Where are you going?” I turned to see Jordan coming downstairs in pajamas and a towel wrapping her hair up.

“Um…I might be able to see Sean after all and dinner was done quicker than I thought so…” I mumbled.

“Oh…Well thanks for helping me out.” she said softly.

“Oh it was no problem at all.” I said, rushing out of the house. I grabbed my phone from my pocket and dialed Sean’s number.

“Amy.” Sean said when he answered.

“Sean. Do we still have time for our date?” I asked.

“Of course.” Sean said, his voice sounding just as sweet and calm over the phone.

“Ok, I’ll just come to your house since I’m already out.” I said. I got in my car, my mind so focused on Jordan that I’d almost forgotten Sean’s home address.

When I pulled up to Sean’s driveway, I found Sean sitting on his porch swing. His eyes lit up as he walked down to his driveway. He opened my car door and helped me out.

“Hi.” I said happily. He kissed me and walked me into his house.

“So where are we going?” I asked.

“Nowhere. We’re staying here.” Sean said, sitting me down on his couch.

“Staying here?” I chuckled.

“Yeah. We’ll just stay here, hang out.” he said softly, holding my hand.

“I’d like that.” I said, giving him a kiss.

Sean always knew how to make me forget my troubles
