I've Got a Secret

This is it.

It's my last night of high school.

Sitting along side Brendon, I am at Jon's house where a casual get together (no, not a party) is being held. There's a somber mood in the air as we all have private conversations with people we will probably never see again. All our universities, future, and life have been planned. We are leading into the future.

There is no alcohol. There is no weed. No drugs, no sex. The drinks are all soda, Gabe is keeping to himself for once. It's different, and everyone senses the heaviness in the air.

Brendon wraps his hand in mine, we sit here comfortably silent. I can name almost everyone in the room.

I find Gabe across the room, talking to a tall lanky boy I know. No, it is not a casual conversation. It's one of those that you see in junior high and giggle because someone likes someone else.

I poke Brendon's side, point his attention towards them.

He cracks into a small grin.

Spencer comes by, he sits down next to me on the couch. "Hey guys."

I punch him in the shoulder, "Hey jerk, thanks for ignoring us the whole night."

Spencer sighs, "Well sorry, but I have people to see, places to go." A smile spreads across his face as he plays with his hands in his lap.

I scoff, "We all know that is a lie."

Brendon laughs lightly, but says nothing.

I return my gaze to Gabe and the lanky boy - who I now recognize as a boy named William - continue their conversation, but now Gabe is leaning a little more towards William. They both occasionally laugh or whisper something to each other.

Spencer has his future planned. University, majoring in music, still doesn't know what he wants to do after college, though.

I don't know what I'm going to do. Rent an apartment over the summer with Brendon, both get jobs, maybe take some courses at the local community college, but anything else I'm not sure of.

Everything is changing for most people, but not for me.

And I like it that way. Sitting on the couch with Brendon and Spencer (who will be visiting occasionally), joking around.

The future is unknown, but for me, is not scary like I thought it would be.
