Chapter 18
Maeve’s POV
We all went back to school for a few days having been told to in order to get together with our work so we wouldn’t fail, not that any of us thought that work was important right now but apparently the parents did so we had to.
Arriving at school the students stared at us as we walked through the grounds to our bench and seated ourselves. I looked around and raised a brow
“Seriously? What do they think happened?” I asked no one in particular, Brice chuckled
“They think we all died or left mysteriously; maybe they all think that we had a mass suicide?!” he exclaimed laughing. It made the rest of us laugh
“yeah I bet they think we were abducted by aliens” Gabe threw in there making us laugh harder.
The bell rang cutting us off and we got to our feet heading into the building.
Walking down the corridor I tried to avoid running into people but inevitably I bumped into someone. Looking at who it was so I could apologise I was shocked to see Amber stood there glaring at me. It wasn’t the fact it was her that shocked me but her appearance; she was pale, deathly compared to her usual tanned self. There were bags under her eyes as deep as bruises and she swayed like she barely had the energy to hold herself up, her hair was lack lustre as well, stringy and greasy
“get away from my dog” she hissed, I raised a brow but moved out of her way letting her walk past me and off into the crowd. I stared after her a moment before walking down and into class where I spent the time thinking about her appearance.
When I reached my next class I sat beside Alex who smiled at me
“hey Maeve” he greeted, I nodded, distracted which he noticed “what’s wrong?” he asked
“Amber” I said absently, a low growl came from him making me focus on him
“Did she do something?” he asked, gritting his teeth, I shook my head
“no but I bumped into her in the corridor, Alex I think the vampires are feeding on her, she looked so bad like she was near death” I confessed in a low tone so others couldn’t eavesdrop.
He frowned
“really?” he asked, I nodded and he took out his phone and started texting, I knew he was probably asking his dad about it.
All through the lesson Alex was texting back and forth with his father, I couldn’t see exactly what they were talking about though.
Alex’s POV
Dad had text me back and told me that in all likely hood they were indeed feeding on humans in the area and that considering they were living with Maeve’s family then they would be a ready food source.
Once class ended I pulled Maeve up and out of her seat, out of the room and out into the school grounds. She stopped and looked at me
“What did he say?” she asked, I sighed
“he said that they probably are feeding off them” I admitted, she bit her lip, worrying it
“are you sure?” she asked, I nodded and she heaved a deep sigh
“I guess I should have seen that coming, I just hope they don’t turn into vampires just from being bitten” she mumbled. I stayed quiet knowing that if I told her Dad thought that they were indeed being turned then she would get upset and I didn’t want that to happen.
I took her hand and led her to the bench and sat down on it, pulling her in close to my side
“it will turn out fine” I whispered in her ear before kissing her temple, she smiled up at me and relaxed into my grip.
