Avidity

The brunettes fingers slipped around her glass. The wine was bitter, but after the day she'd had, she didn't care. The bar was crowded, as usual. But she was able to get lost in the sea of drunken males who leered at any woman who walked in.

"Rough day?" a smooth voice said.

Raising an eyebrow, she answered, "The work of a lawyer is always rough."

"You're a lawyer?" he asked, his lips twitching. "I wouldn't have pegged you for one."

"Because that's a man's job?"

He chuckled and brushed a hand through his dark hair. "Usually. But it's to see that a woman has the skill to do that job. It's refreshing from the typical waitresses or teachers that I've come across."

"And what is it that you do?" she asked, crossing her legs.

He watched her, the gears in his head turning, and said carefully, "I'm an artist."
