You Have My Attention

I confess, I messed up.

The next day, Remi paced her living room as she waited on Garrett to arrive. She was surprised he had agreed but, then again she assumed he felt obligated since she was certain he thought he hurt her feelings the other day. He texted her around 7 that night, and she spent the next twenty minutes waiting on him and internally freaking out.

A knock on the door startled her and she breathed in as she walked over to it. She could get through this, she just needed to relax.

Of course Garrett was on the other side and once their eyes met he spoke, "Hi." He whispered and she stepped over so he could walk in although her heart now raced. Her eyes glanced over the boy who was in his typical fashion choice. A band shirt (probably a band she didn't know) and jeans that fit him well. His hair of course was already a bit messy which didn't surprise her. If anything it made her grin just because it was so him.

"Is John going to ambush me?" He mumbled as she shut the door. Her thoughts of him quickly vanishing.

"No. Just you and me."

He nodded as he nervously sat on the couch.

"Listen, Remi, I'm sorry about..."

"It's not a big deal. John blew it out of proportion."

He just nodded before speaking, "Then why am I here?" He questioned. Sure, he didn't mind hanging out with her, in fact he found himself wanting to do just that, but he got the vibe that was not why he was here.

"Why are you with that girl?" She asked and he groaned, "Not you too."

"Well seeing as how none of them can talk rationally to you I figured I would hear your side and be the voice of reason."

He sighed as he ran his hand through his hair, "It's complicated."

"Gar, no offense, but that's bullshit. She apparently treated you like shit why would you even give her the time of day again?"

"Because, Remi. It's not that easy! I was with her for five years, and on top of that, she actually likes me." He stated. He didn't know why he automatically went into defensive mode. Maybe because that's all he did when he was actually with Catherine so it just felt natural.

She gave him a look, "So?"

"So? Maybe you find this hard to believe but girls aren't necessarily dying to date me!"

"Seriously?" She asked before laughing and he glared at her.

"You're an idiot." She blankly said not bothering to sugar coat it. She couldn't stop it from coming out actually.

"Excuse me?" He questioned, unsure if he heard her right and she shook her head. She was disappointed in him simply from his response and she didn't even know it would be that simple.

"I gave you way too much credit. Which is stupid because I barely know you."

His eyes narrowed in confusion and she grin weakly, "Go."

"No, what are you saying?" He asked seriously.

"I'm saying, the boy I thought I knew and the real you are two different things."

"Oh and who did you think I was?" He asked and she fell into a chair not too far from him.

"A smart, confident, good looking guy. Who was just a bit on the shy maybe awkward side."

Garrett didn't respond, just stared at the girl like she was speaking in a different language. Did he come off as any of those things besides shy and awkward? How could she see him in such a different light? He kind of felt bad for not living up to her standards because a part of him wished he was all of those things.

"Whether you agree or not, you deserve better than someone who treats you like shit. Sure you'll have someone but you'll be miserable so why not be alone? Wouldn't it be the same thing without the hassle?"

The room grew quiet and Garrett couldn't move his gaze from her. Her words were now circulating his head and he was officially at a loss.

"You can go whenever. I'm done." She got out softly.

"Ok." He mumbled tugging on his hair before moving from the couch and heading to the door. She sighed once it closed behind him.

That apparently didn't go the way she wanted. She clearly needed to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt all the time. She just assumed he was different.

Of course not even five minutes later John stepped into her house and by the look on her face he could tell it wasn't going to be what he wanted to hear.

"Well?" He asked anyways.

She shrugged and he gave her a look, "No go, huh?"

"I think he's just lonely. I don't know."

"Aren't we all?"

She grinned, "Something tells me you're not."

"There's a lot you don't know about me." He stated and she looked over at him.

He grinned and she moved to the couch where he now resided.

"Oh John Oh, This is why we're friends." She said relaxing against the arm of the couch and propping her feet up in his lap.

"Why is that?"

"Because there's a lot you don't know about me as well."

John chuckled, "Oh please do tell."

"Oh no. We have to leave some mystery in our relationship, John."

He laughed once more, "Right. Of course we do."

She grinned as she laid her head against the couch, her eyes still on him.

"I really am sorry Remi." He spoke seriously and she shrugged with a grin. She assumed he was talking about Garrett at this point.

"No big deal. It was just a crush. I barely know him."

"I know but still. Crushes suck."

"Well I guess that's why they call them crushes, huh?"

John smiled, "Good point."

"But lucky for me I still have you!"

"Man, you're so lucky."

She chuckled, a smile lingering on her lips, "Seriously though, thank you."

"No big deal. We're friends. I hear friends are suppose to help each other."

"Yeah I think I heard something like that."

He grinned and held out his hand for her.

"What?"

He didn't respond and she finally placed her hand in his. He pulled her up causing her to laugh and shift her position until she was laying with him.

"He'll come around I hope. I mean I'm sure he's overthinking everything you said to him right now."

"He sucks." She mumbled and he chuckled, "Yeah well, you're intimidating, give him a break."

"Am not."

"Are so."

"Well someone has to be."

He chuckled as he brushed back her hair, "He'll come around."

She relaxed against his arm as he continued messing with her hair and it wasn't long after that she fell asleep. She was done worrying about Garrett. At least she needed to try and convince herself of that...

"I am so confused!" She heard and she groaned as she rubbed her eyes before opening them to see who was yelling.

"I told you to lock your fucking door." John grumbled as he squinted to see Kayla and Nick standing next to them.

"What?" Remi mumbled not in the mood.

"Do you like John or Garrett?"

"What time is it?!" She questioned and Nick looked at his watch, "9. In the morning."

She groaned and Kayla sighed, "Well?!"

John couldn't help but chuckle, "Yeah Remi do you like me or Garrett?" He asked and she punched him lightly in the chest.

He couldn't help but laugh and she looked up at the pair who seemed a bit mad which made john laugh even more.

"She likes Garrett. Trust me. So you two can rest easy now" John spoke for her and she sighed giving up and laying back down.

"Is there a reason why you are in my house?" She mumbled out.

"Yeah, well one, I wouldn't be here if you would have answered your phone but besides that, Garrett called Nick..."

"And?" She mumbled rubbing at her eyes.

"And he told Nick he had messed up."

"What? Messed up how?" She asked sitting up and even John looked a bit surprised.

"Yeah. He said he was being stupid and wasting his time. I guess about Catherine. Anyways, so we were thinking, you could check up on him."

Remi groaned, "Me? Don't you think he would find that a bit ironic that I show up?"

"No, actually I don't."

"Yeah since you're the reason he probably did it! This is perfect really." Nick chimed in with a smile.

She sighed and fell back onto the couch. Her head hitting John's arm.

"So you're going right?" Nick asked and she covered her face.

"I guess freaking so."

"Great! Let us know how it goes!" Kayla said happily and Remi groaned as she pushed off the couch and walked to her room.

"So, maybe you should wear those blue jean shorts..." John mused as he leaned on the frame of the door.

"Jerk."

He laughed, "Seriously. I told you he would think about what you said."

"I'm so influential."

"Right...."

She chuckled as she decided on an outfit. She looked at him and he sighed, "I'll wait downstairs."

The girl returned to John 20 minutes later and he smiled causing her to roll her eyes, "Stop."

"I'm not doing anything! Do you remember how to get to Garrett's?"

She nodded and he pushed from the couch, "Well, off you go."

"I'll be by when I'm done if Catherine hasn't killed me or something."

John chuckled, "My money is on you, honey "

She laughed, "Bye."

The pair separated and she climbed in her car.

Here goes nothing.
