Cake Lollipops

Supplies

  • Chocolate Cake Mix (.and whatever it says on the box so that you can make it. The eggs, water, oil, etc)
  • 1 can of Chocolate frosting
  • Foil
  • Vegetable Oil Spray
  • Lollipop sticks (I got mine off of ebay, but you can find them at hobby stores, I think... plus, I used about 50-ish)
  • Candy melts (Wal-Mart. xD and I used about 1 and a half bags of this.)
  • Gel Food coloring (...Yes, it has to be gel. and whatever colors you want. I used purple. :P)
  • Shortening (you know, like Crisco? You don't need a lot of it either...like ... a spoonful.)
  • Styrofoam

Procedure

Okay, now that you have everything you'll need to make these little lovelies, you need to go off to go bake your little cake. Foil the pan and spray it with vegetable oil. Mix your cake mix together and pour it into said pan. Then let it bake away.

Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool COMPLETELY. (It's important that you do this.)

Now that that's done, you need to find a very large bowl and transfer the cake from the pan to the bowl. If it falls apart during that process, it's fine because after you put the cake in the bowl, you need to crumble the cake anyways. Then add the entire can of frosting and mix it all together so that the cake can hold it's form as you mold it. :P Now you take part of that mixture and roll it into balls about one inch in diameter. Set them to the side.

Now take your chocolate melts and follow the directions so that you have your melted mixture. Add that spoonful of shortening to it and mix it together. Now take your lollipop sticks and dip it into the candy melt and poke it into the cake balls. Don't push it all the way in though. Otherwise the cake balls might fall apart. About halfway in should do. Stick the cake lollipops into the styrofoam so that the cake melt has enough time to harden. Do it to the rest of the cake balls.

Now the tricky part. You need to coat each cake lollipop with the candy melt. Taking the first lollipop, you are going to have to angle the stick so that the cake is close to the bowl. Pour the melt onto the cake ball with a spoon and as you do that, spin the stick in your hand so that you can get an even coat. This took me several tries before I got close to becoming good, so don't worry if you fail the first time around. (hint: If your candy melt starts to become lumpy, pop it back in the microwave for about 30 seconds and it should be good as new.)

Stick the lollipop back into the styrofoam once you're done with the coating and continue on with the rest of the lollipops. Once your done, put the rest of the candy melt into a zip-loc or something similar and add the food coloring until you get your desired color. Once the Cake Lollipop's outer layer hardens, you can drizzle the extra candy melt on to make it pretty. :3 And then your done.

Be creative! If you don't have sticks, make it into a sort of bonbon thing. Or you can change the design up a bit, like making the cake lollipops into the shape of eyes for Halloween or put sprinkles on the cake lollipop for decorations rather than using the extra candy melt. Remember, the point is to just have fun with this. :3
