Funny thing is, the original Goulash (funny to spell it this way.... Anyway) was with beef but served with mashed potatoes, bread, noodles or macaroni. Over the years it changed to any kind of meat instead of beef. - So @shell_drums is partly right and partly wrong.
Another funny thing is, this is actually a very famous dish in Czech Republic. Idk why.
Anyway, love this dish made with beef and then served with massed potatoes, though I think that it's quite alright with chicken as well... I need to try that. But yeah, try to serve it with mashed potatoes - A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!
Or if you don't want it served with anything then you should try to make Goulash soup - Best thing ever... It's the same but with bell pepper, beef, carrots and other stuff.. And to make it extra fantastic, you put a spoonful of sour creme in it when it's done cooking (when it's on your plate, not before that)..
Sorry for the rant, just thought that I'd comment on one of my favorite dishes haha.
My dad used to make this all the time and I made it last week for my boyfriend. Alas I shall pick another.
Ours is much more simplistic; beef, tomatoes, and pasta with grated Parmesan cheese for the top.
