This has really calmed me down about high school. I just finished middle school and have been looking forward to high school, but still had my doubts. Thanks for the advice!

It is insane how unrealistic high schools are in TV shows and movies. When I was young I thought High School was some big scary place were bullies ruled the school, cheerleaders were arrogant and dated football jocks and nerds were super smart, but geeky and uncool.

And now that I'm actually here, I'm kind-of upset that high schools are portrayed as dangerous. TV shows need to be more realistic. I know it's not as entertaining, but still.

Thanks for writing this though. Wish I would have read it when I was in elementary school or Jr. High...

I pretty much agreed with everything in this article. I just started high school on the 8th. I didn't expect to get trash canned or anything, but I wasn't excited either.

Like Ariveria said, the school spirit thing is a bit much. I've never been too into those things, but not because I think it's stupid, and I don't think anyone is stupid for having spirit. That's their thing, right?
Like you said in your own article, "Don't play sports? Okay, then don't." Well, in my situation it's, "Don't want to flaunt school spirit? Okay, then don't." It's the same thing to me. Homecoming is soon, but my friends and I are already making plans for that day instead of homecoming. Who's to say I won't have as much, if not more, fun with my friends someplace else as I would at homecoming? And for all the people that will have fun at homecoming, good for them!

Other than that, I really did like this article. It described my first entire high school experience. Thanks for that!

I'm going into my sophomore year of high school. Most of the kids in my school are pretty nice and we had no reason to be worried. Some of the kids will probably be immature and stuff like that, but for the most part media just makes it look way scarier than it actually is.

High school the memories. Luckily for me my high school was split into two campuses so incoming freshman did not have to deal with immature upperclassmen who thought it funny to pick on them. Everyone is on the same level in high school just because you're a senior it doesn't make you higher on the food chain and people need to realize that, there are idiots who are seniors who act worse than the freshman. Your advice is helpful, but not entirely realistic.

I'm an incoming Freshman. I've been freaking out all summer because my school is gigantic. I think that this has calmed me down a bit though, thanks. I'm actually kind of excited to do the making new friends thing because I used to be really shy, but this school year I really came out of my shell. Let's hope I don't lose my confidence! This article is pretty acurate. At my school we can't carry backpacks around though so... any school that can is lucky in my eyes.

Hahaha! I remember my first day. I thought I would be shoved into a garbage can. Sadly for my high school, it was quite clique-y... much like Mean Girls. College/University is much better. Everything gets dropped again. You get a fresh start. Anywho, GREAT article.

Ha-ha. I remember my first day of high school. I had butterflies in my stomach, and thought that high school was going to be like Mean Girls or Gossip Girls. Not one bit. If you're entering high school, just know that high school students are just like middle school students. We just look older and maybe a bit more maturer. Joining clubs is a great way to find new friends. Just put yourself out there, and say, "Hey, mind if I ___ with you?"

Thanks for the advice :) I'm super nervous about the first day of my freshman year. Not only is it a new school, but it's like, huge. It's one of the top rated schools in the state, which is nice to know. But I'm moving, too, so I will literally know no one. x: But thanks :) Reading this made me a little bit less nervous.

Just graduated high school, and I found myself feeling a bit nostalgic about the first day jitters of freshman year, haha. Also, thinking about your advice and remembering when I did (and didn't) try those things. I agree with so much of your article. It's so important to just make friends if you have none, relax, and be yourself. And definitely good advice about creating clubs if there aren't any interesting ones! People did that at my school all the time, so we'd have random stuff like "Zombie-Apocalypse Survival Club" and something about sombreros. I have no idea what the sombrero club did during their meetings. Now I wish I'd gone, haha.

Though, the school spirit remark was a bit uncalled for. I never thought my school was stupid, and I like it well enough, but never got into the school spirit. Doesn't mean I hated the place, doesn't mean I was looking down on anyone, doesn't mean I was "too full of it." For some people, it just isn't their thing. Don't just thoughtlessly dismiss different personalities as bad, okay? :P

Anyway, again, overall I really liked this article. Excellent advice for the poor freshies. :)

Thank you so much for the advice. I am now reassured that being socially awkward won't make me look completely pathetic. No, I'm serious. I'm very grateful for the advice. Especially that bathroom one! I usually don't think of it until I need to use the bathroom, but I'll definitely keep that in mind.
I'm going to the biggest high school in my state, so I'm pretty nervous of getting lost. Hopefully my classes will all be around the same area.

I can actually say high school was probably the worst time in my life. I hated it. The people were stuck up and nasty to deal with, everyone had so much childish drama and all of that adolescent immaturity (not saying I didn't have my immature moments). High school on television looked a lot more glamorous.
Ha. Ha. Parties being legal. Not where I lived. Lot of drugs, alcohol and illegal stuff.

I skimmed. I'm in a middle school/high school so I already have my group of friends. I'm also in an alternative school, so the populars are smart or drama geeks

I'm actually gonna be a freshman next year but I'm not worried at all cause the school I'm, going to is for Freshmen only. So I'll basically only see my teachers and kids my age.

Yippee. I was actually hoping to interact with older kids because my peers tend to be really dramatic or really idiotic to the point where it's just useless befriending them.
