Exactally. I myself am guilty of the charges. But seriously, emo is a music style if even. So lay off the kids that have the style. Just because someone wears tight pants, band tshirts, converse and has bitchin or long hair doesnt mean that theyre "emo". And peoples, not all cutters are freaks...

True, sadly true many people are too judgmental. They are really harsh too. Besides i know not everybody likes the title much.

Finally someone has shown the truth of what the word "emo" really means. I don't cut, or whatever but i do inflict self harm. I beat myself up physically and emotionally. Like when I cry I punch a wall hard enough for my arm muscles to pull and my knuckles to bleed. I hide my emotions well, and I wear sweaters/hoodies everywhere. To the beach or even just inside the house. I am really depressed and filled with anger and have been critizied for it even though no one knows in my family because they don't take the time to ask why i'm so sore and am in pain. But thank you for revealing the truth. I do get a high, sometimes, but i mostly get relaxation and numbing after I beat myself. So thanks. XD

Some people have been saying things about how people decide to dress emo just for the style and that that's wrong, but i have to disagree. If you are a fan of the music and find the bands amazing, what's wrong with wearing band t-shirts? If you like the feel of skinny jeans, (Especially the ones from Hot Topic. They're awesome) what's wrong with wearing skinny jeans? If you want to wear a skate sweatshirt because it's scary to not wear a sweatshirt, (And it IS scary to not wear a sweatshirt. You feel so exposed) then why not? Emo is not about self-harm. It is about the music and the attitude. This wasn't aimed at anyone's comment in particular. I just saw a few comments about that, so I wanted to add my piece.

I totally agree with the article... People judge us to much and too quick.. It just makes me laugh when they see me at the mall and their faces are hilarious as hell..
    I am Emo..
I love the music and style, especially the hair does help us when we just cant keep our emotions in check. and this is why we say a lot that we are afraid to show emotion because it makes us look weak. but it is true we do need somebody to lend us a ear once in a while and help us out..
There are reasons why were like this and most of the reason is because we are either mentally abuse or physically.. Or nobody will listen to us, or just life is going into an other direction than we intend it to go..

Just wanted to say my part for all my friends out there who wanted to know my say.. well, Peace!!

I think you are right. People tend to judge everybody they see without even having the slightest idea about who they are, what they think or feel. But there are people who are pretty annoying for me. Some people has turned this to a style. Not that I complain but people think that it's cool. But they don't have any idea about what the word "emo" even means. There's no need to turn this into a life styles if you don't have any issues or problems. You know something like "Oh, I'm gonna be emo.. I think it looks cool." That's basicly being a stereotype..

    Yup.
Its pretty messed up how some people taken that clothes style because they think its 'cool'
No offence to those who do.
But after all the years some people take wearing that, just for them to turn around and wear the same thing.
Pretty messed up if you ask me.

    I really like this.
I hate it when people judge people like this.
I dress the way you described and people immediatly called me emo.
I used to cause self-harm, but not because I thought it was cool.
Because I needed to be numb.
I always write in my notebook because I'm writing stories, not depressed poems.
People always assume that and I'm sick of it.
    Anyway I'm rambling now.
    Well written.
    I really liked this.

I don't understand this. The title says "the truth behind the word emo" and you basically described and talked about people catagorized under that sterotype.

Emo came from Emotional Hardcore, a.k.a a type of music. Just so you know.

The best article on 'emo' that I've ever read. It makes me feel better.
Some of my friends are emo and laughed at, and it gets on my nerves. Now I have some good backup info for them. ^^~
