Thank you for writing this, you covered a controversial issue very well :)
And god, I totally agree. Free speech is one thing...disgracing people's final resting place is another. A non-condonable other. Not to mention their blatant homophobia and Jew hatred.
Disgusting. Although I am an atheist, these people are perverting Christianity the way that, arguably, many terrorists pervert Islam. It's just... ridiculous.
those people make me sick to my stomach. they're not human beings, they're animals in my eyes, fat squealing sows that learnt to walk on their hind legs.
I'm a bit confused about where the law currently stands on this. Because wouldn't what they're doing be considered a hate speech, and aren't hate speeches considered illegal in this country?
I understand free speech, certainly, but I definitely feel like there does need to be limitations on where this free speech can occur. Public forums? Absolutely. But in the same way that free speech is somewhat limited within places like schools, it should be limited in very private affairs like funerals.
I'm all for freedom of speech, but not for the allowance of hate speeches and protests at private funerals...of anyone. Whether it be a civilian, a president, a congressman, or a soldier.
If the Westboro Baptist Church wishes to continue to protest...whatever it is that they're protesting, that's perfectly fine. But there's a time and a place for it, a funeral isn't it.
They preach about how America is doomed, so why not just leave the country? Why don't they move to a place where all of their fantasies can be realized, because they are getting no where in America. In my eyes, Westboro will never be a church and will always be a cult.
What I don't understand is they call themselves religious people but in the bible it states that only God can judge. I think this church is taking it too far and are no better than terrorists themselves.
They're disgusting, simple as that. I hate that some people see all Christians this way because this certainly isn't the way our religion is supposed to be. Jesus teaches love and acceptance, kind of like a hippie religion, I guess you would say. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to do this kind of thing. Yes, the Old Testament said that gays were an abomination and they should be stoned. But it also said that about people who looked at other women while they were married, and so on. When Jesus came, the Old Testament's laws passed away, and he ushered in a new law of love and acceptance.
