There's been a Mosque (an Islamic temple) proposed to be built as near where the WTC used to be as possible. It's also been approved by the council who decides this stuff, and so far, opposition has been unable to stop the building, first attempting to declare the building being torn down to make space a landmark, and now suing for a similar reason.

This is being seen by people all over the world as an extreme affront to Americans, and, in fact, people in the world who've been affected by islamic attacks on WTC, in london, in madrid, and elsewhere. People are screaming for it to stop.

In the name of political correctness, religious tolerance, and peace, politicians are pushing for this to happen, even the mayor of NYC. The reasoning behind this is that a mosque so near to the site of the trade towers will foster peace, good relations, and overall just improve the relationship between Americans, especially those of lower manhattan, and Muslims.

I, for one, am offended, astonished that this was even considered and believe this is the equivalent of them pissing on the graves of the people who died on 9/11 and since.

Where do you stand, and why?

If this was any other type of building, would you still see it as "pissing on the graves of people who died on 9/11 and since"?

Or is it just the fact that it's a Mosque that's bothering you (and presumably others)?

It's not every single Muslim in the world that planned and carried out 9/11, and this is precisely the reaction you'd expect.

I don't see why people have problems with mosques being built; why can't Muslims (or any other religion for that matter) have a place to worship and pray in whatever country they live in? I'm not even religious but I think that kind of intolerance and discrimination is pathetic.

Humanity has sunk to new lows. Facepalm
Muslims died in 9/11 as well as in other terrorist attacks, you know. I think it's incredibly offensive to suggest that they don't deserve to be commemorated in a place of worship of their own close to where they died just because of their religion. I bet people have no problem with Christian churches being build on/next to Ground Zero.

Wait, you're Muslim? You must be a terrorist. Or you support the terrorists. [/sarcasm]

America is suppose to be the land of freedom and tolerance.

And no one worried about how the Native Americans felt when we forcibly moved them off to the sh*ttiest pieces of land.

It's things like this that make me almost hate being American.

I support the building and use of every mosque, church, synagogue, and temple. Americans need to get over themselves.

Oh, I'm sorry, but isn't the US where we came for religious tolerance? Or is that only for people other than Muslims?

I'm American and I have no problem with this. Just because it's a mosque doesn't mean it's a headquarters for Muslim terrorists in the US. Building this mosque could help show that we accept Islam instead of treating it differently because of a few bad people who follow it. Building the mosque is going to help us more than it will hurt us.

Making it illegal to build a mosque at Ground Zero would be like making it illegal to start a Christian church in Salem, Massachusetts. People from all religions do bad things, but that doesn't mean everyone who practices that religion should get punished for it.

I was under the impression she was saying that there shouldn't' be anything built on the ground zero thing at all. This is ridiculous seeing all this Anti-American crap. You're doing exactly what you're saying you're against. You're saying all Americans are religiously intolerant. This is stupid as hell.

I think they shouldn't be building ANYTHING but a memorial. They need to save that spot and build something for the people that died there. Maybe a museum. I think its stupid that they're building it there just because they think it will create some sort of peaceful understanding amongst the people. I think its stupid that they're building it there because Islamic people attacked the Trade center. Its another case of trying TOO hard to make everything right. All this is going to do is piss people off and they should know it.

This church is going to be attacked out the ass. Because, yes, some people are intolerant simply because its a mosque. Others are mad because that was the spot of an AWFUL attack on the American people. They're making it cheap by thinking building a mosque will just make it all better. THAT'S why I'm against it. Not because of the religion, but because of the thought behind it.

It's not on Ground Zero, it is merely near it. They're building some memorial at Ground Zero itself.

But upon hearing this news, I will admit I laughed because it made me realise why Frankie Boyle left MTW.

But in all seriousness, who cares?

On that basis, there would not be a church or chapel within at least 100 yards of Ireland at all - or a mosque or any sort of temple in India or anything remotely God-ish in Israel. Religion has fought itself all over the world, claiming victims of all colours, creeds and belief. This is nothing.

JessiBunny The mosque isn't being built on Ground Zero, it is being built two blocks away.

And it won't just be a mosque. It will be a community center and a place of worship.

Why should the 800,000 Muslims who live and work in NYC not get a place of worship? Because some Muslims half-way across the world did a terrible, awful thing?

And we are not being Anti-American.

    Religious intolerance is Anti-American.

Islam is not a hateful religion. The people who attacked the WTC were complete extremists and certainly do not represent Islam and all Muslims.

Most of the Muslims who would visit the proposed Mosque, I daresay, wouldn't be extremists. They'll likely be normal Musilims who don't want to do any harm to American society.

America IS the land of religious tolerance.

Did you know NY state has the second most Mosque(s?), second only to (unsurprisingly) California?

This is being religiously intolerant, yes. It's also being ignorant on the part of the people building the mosque to do it so close to ground zero. When I think of 9/11 the first thing I think of is Islamic extremists. I don't want to be thinking of that more, and I believe the residents of lower manhattan agree, every time I think/look at/walk by this mosque.
Yes, moslems died in 9/11. Do you see any other religion (who, honestly, was probably represented more) trying to build their holy site as close to ground zero as they can?

What this is an effort to do, I'm unsure. But it is in ill taste. Jess said it well... "They're making it cheap by thinking building a mosque will just make it all better. THAT'S why I'm against it. Not because of the religion, but because of the thought behind it."

^ How can you even be sure that's the thought behind it?

Could it be conceivable that this is merely the best bit of ground for the job? I'm pretty sure Manhattan hasn't got enough space in it to swing a cat, nevermind to build such a centre.

Like I said, what about other places? Other places blighted by terrorist attacks from religion?

I don't really have enough knowledge to say about that. Specific example?

I do believe that people are being ignorant on both sides of the issue. And I don't believe that it's the best bit of ground for a mosque to be built, at all, if only because of all the controvery surrounding it.

I apologize for not knowing exactly where it was being built. Now that I know where it is, I have no problem with it at all.

I do however, have a problem with their reasoning behind wanting it at that spot right there. (if there were no other options I would understand, but doing it for that reason is pretty ridiculous.)

If its that far away then why is being considered something thats messing with the Trade Center? Why would anyone even mention the Trade Centers if its that far away? There's just more drama to be started. If they wanted the Mosque they shouldn't have said anything about the Trade Centers. That's what would piss a lot of people off extremely fast (Obviously.) They should have just built it and said nothing about it being a way to peace. That's where they went wrong, that was pretty stupid of them to even bring it up.

Well, I'm not sure how permits and building licenses work in NYC but the place they want to built is already occupied by an abandon building and they want to tear it down and built a whole new building. So they probably had to fill out paper work with what they wanted to built there.
