As the title states, how long does it take you write a story update?
I mainly write oneshots. It can take me anywhere from ten minutes to two years. (I've been working on Ammie for over two years, I think, and it's still not even half done.)

The one I'm working on now has been a few days. Usually it takes anywhere between ten minutes and few hours for me.

When I update a chaptered story (rare), it usually takes about two hours. (I'm mainly referring to 9 Months here.)

My favorite stories are the ones that take the least time to write (usually a few hours, or days). Mostly oneshots too.

I can take anywhere from six months to never when it comes to updating though lmfao

It takes awhile for me to update a story that I've been working on for a long time because the inspiration begins to run dry on it. But a new story, updates are pretty fast to start off with then they don't come as frequent as the story progresses.

One-shots are something that depends on how strong of the idea that I have is. I'm writing an Adam Lambert one-shot right now and it's only halfway finished but it's still taking forever to write it, though I blame the sex-scene in there for the long wait. XD And then there are other one-shots that take up to an hour to write and finish. It just depends on the idea in my head whether or not that I'll ever get it finished quickly or slowly.

    I hear ya!

But when I sit down to update, the actual writing part general only takes a few hours.

Of course, I did start an update on "Muze, Daddy", like, FOREVER ago. And then went back to it an added a line, like, a year later. And did the same thing, like, three weeks ago. I did that with "Baby in the Closet" too.

I write fairly quickly when I'm inspired; but that's regarding oneshots.
    ...
It normally takes me around 3 months or more to update a chaptered story. That's why I never write chaptered stories.

It takes me forever to update a chaptered story (a few of my stories haven't been updated in a over year). I take about a week on average to write a one-shot.

I try to update each of my chaptered stories once a week... but sometimes it can take up to three weeks.

So I guess I try to be fairly consistant.

It takes forever for me to update, mainly because it's hard for me to find time to just sit down and write anything. Plus I get distracted too easily, so that doesn't help.

If it's a story I'm "on a roll" with, it'll generally only take a couple hours to write each chapter, it's just getting there to the point where I can sit and write that holds me up.

I am the slowest updater on the planet. There are huge month gaps in between my chaptered stories. Some of them are just rotting there. XD However, when I am in a writing kick, I write an update in like an hour, if not less.

    "Two weeks"? Shifty

It really depends. If I sit down with the purpose of banging out a chapter, I can usually get through about a third of the chapter in one sitting, but then it may be weeks again before I can write the next third of that chapter. The last time I actually "timed" myself while writing was during the latest chapter of Awkward. I wrote about three thousand words over a five hour span of time (I was updating my word count on Twitter as I wrote).

For my story Pete the chapters are fairly short. It sometimes takes me only a couple of hours to write the entire chapter, but then I spend more hours editing. And even then, the updates are eons apart.

I guess I'm pretty terrible when it comes to updating.

With oneshots, on the other hand, once I start writing one, I can usually finish it within the day (and then maybe take another couple of days to edit it). Oneshots, for me, are easier because I have it all in mind and I have a better idea of what I want to happen and where I want it to go. I don't have to focus so much on how I'm going to get the current piece to meld into the "bigger picture" because that one piece is the bigger picture.

Large is the easiest. It has a hazy direction, and they're essentially just true drabbles from my life. Inspiration comes directly from me. It really only takes a couple days to update it, but sometimes I'm swamped with other things in my life. It just depends.

On average, I update Suicide Sonnets once a month. Writing the update itself can take anywhere from one or two hours, to one to two weeks. I will usually have a chunk of it done, then just keep adding to it whenever I feel like it.

Most of my other stories are not nearly as fortunate. For Thorns, usually I average an update once every three months. Those updates are the longest due to the size of them; I usually try to pack quite a bit into a chapter.

Drabbles, I can get done in half an hour, provided I have the inspiration. The same goes for most oneshots.

I have two stories in the works, and I'm attempting to write most of them before I even think of posting, so. It's easier, really; I feel less of a time constraint.

    It really depends Think
If I have the insperation and just sit down and write, then I can get rough drafts for the next couple of chapters for The Last Fight done in a few hours. Music Girl was updated almost daily during NaNo because it was my project, but now updates for it are so slow Facepalm
And His Eyes... I used to write an update nightly. Now I'm stuck with writers block >< But those updates used to only take about half an hour xD

Too long. XD I'd say my inability to plan is probably partly to blame. Also, I find myself uninspired and easily distracted all too often.

For me it depends on the stories or subject matter. My most recent story has about an update a day, and I'd say it takes me eight to ten hours to write each of those, since I get up and down while I write.

On other stories I've been writing, like Spades and Disconnect the Dots it takes me anywhere from a week to a month to six months. I haven't updated DtD in forever, while it's only been about a month or so for Spades.

One shots can take anywhere from 45 minutes to three days for me.

When writing one shots, the time it takes is varied. I've been working on one for a request for about... three months now. But another one shot I started yesterday got finished within an hour or two. There's usually a bridge somewhere in the writing that I have to get over, and once I do it tends to get a lot easier to finish it.

For chaptered stories... well, I love updating. It's the most enjoyable part of the process for me when I can post a chapter that I've written, edited, and am happy with. So, I try to update as regularly as I can. New stories usually get bumped up to the top of my priorities, but I like to think I'm pretty consistent.

In fact, I'm trying to make it a habit to update most of my stories just once a week so I don't overwhelm readers by posting twice every day or something insane like that.

    XD

It depends. The OF I'm working on, I've been working on for all of this year and half of last, and it's only just hit 20,000 words. I tend to write a lot, and then leave it for a while. I write in huge bursts. XD Although, I suppose, I've only been writing it properly for the better part of this year. The other stuff was little bits and pieces whilst I was working out the plot and stuff.

I'm also writing a Remus/Sirius chaptered fic, and it's so easy. Maybe because I'm less self-consious because JK has already created the world? Idk. It's easier to write than my OF, and I think because that self-consciousness isn't there as much. I wrote 2,300 words in about four/five hours today.

And one shots can be anywhere between five minutes and a year XD I've been writing this Green Day one for a while, and I just can't get it the way I want. But other times, they just come out so easily it's like I've almost written them subconsciously xD

With my chaptered story that I've got on here, Ringing in the Sane, I wrote the first few chapters pretty quickly, and then there was a massive swell in the middle, and then the end was pretty quick, too. Beginnings are very easy to write, I find, and I can write a couple of chapters in a day.

I'm terrible with actually writing and updating but I live in a bad environment for it
Or at least I tell myself that tehe

Before I took it down, the story Nagini was thirteen chapters long and I wrote it in about four days. But my A-Team slash, I've been working on chapter two for a month and three sentences are done. I have the scene in my head, have the notes done, just too lazy to write it.

My Batman/Iron Man oneshots only ever take about fifteen or twenty minutes to write, the Holmes ones take a lot longer though for some reason.

And my novel I started in May, I handwrote 57 pages in three weeks of history lessons, left college, never wrote anymore :3

I'm just bad with it all XD
