"You'll read them because it is your job as an apprentice to learn them. I owe you no explanation." I said, not even sparing him a glance as I continued to organize Grandfather's files.

He shook his head. "I don't want to. There's something about you that I find special. I want to be here with you."

He shook his head,"Ah he said you were stubborn we're going to be working together it would seem, might as well get along," he told her.

She looked at him,"special?" she asked softly.

"I am being civil, am I not, Mr. Ashford? I do not see reason on earning your acquaintance on a personal level. So I will not." I said, beginning to copy his notes into a separate file.

He nodded. "You're different. There's something bright about you, happy. I want to figure out what it is, granted you'll give me permission."

"And why is that, we'll be working together probably for years," he told her.

She gave a small nod,"Of course, I should warn you my grandfather is eager to marry me off," she told him softly.

"Not years. After you pass my grandfather's exam, you will join the lawmakers. During this time you will select your own assistant and continue from there. I am to assist you in passing the exam, no further. The faster you learn, the less time we'll be working together." I said, handing him more files.

He nodded. "I am aware. I am more than capable of supporting you, however
my family would rather I marry to increase the wealth.

He shook his head,"I am meant to work for your grandfather long term," he said to her.

She nodded,"thats how most do," she murmured softly,"I have nothing but myself to offer you and your family,"

"Then after I have taught you what you need to know, you will become his assistant, and I will no longer be needed. Whether months or years, I find no reward in becoming friendly with you. And so I won't." I said, holding my paper up.

He smiled a little. "I would like to get to know you regardless. My family doesn't know of my coming here, but ill visit you as often as possible."

She nodded, "I appreciate your company," she murmured to him smiling a little.

He looked at her, and shook his head as he looked at the papers.

I handed him a separate file and sighed. "I made a copy of the current case they're working on, so you'll have your own to study from as they go through with it." I said, putting it in front of him. "It's a case on slavery insurance."

He smiled. "And I yours. Shall we go for a walk? Its a beautiful day outside."
