When the Lights Go Out

Reece went up to his room after failing with the radio. He began sorting through his things. He figured they should have some stuff packed in case someone came to rescue them.

Katie came into his room and frowned seeing him packing. So the radio hadn't worked for him. She walked up behind him and ran her hand up his beck then hugged him from behind her head resting on his back. "What are you doing?" she whispered holding him still while she tried to figure out what she needed to do for him.

Reece stopped, "I figured we should be ready to go if people come looking for us," he said softly. He held her hand carefully, "We might never come back here," he said with a hint of sadness in his vioce.

Katie frowned knowing what he was thinking. He was right though. What he brought with him would be what he would have for the rest of his childhood and that was if no body took it from him. Not that she would let that happen. Katie sighed softly. "Reece... No one is looking. That is something you will start to realize." she said. She knew that by now if his parents were alive they would have found a way to get to Reece. But the fact was they hadn't made any contact and no one would ever look for them again. Katie felt bad to say it but she knew he needed to start to understand that the world without parents was cruel. Katie kissed his neck and then let him go. "I'll go pack my bag too. "Reece... You're going to be safe." she said softly and then left to go find a suitcase bag and stuff it with whatever she would need.

Reece knew what she was saying made sense, but it still freaked him out. He finished packing his bag, and went down to her room, "should we go somewhere, or just wait here?" he asked lightly. He felt lost, and wasn't sure what to do, the feeling scared him, he was used to knowing where he stood, and being able to ask his parents for advice. He tried to smile when she turned around, but just couldn't manage to make one. He moved over to the window and stared out it.

Katie looked up at him as he came in and she frowned when he couldn't even smile. She watched him walk over to the window and stare blankly out at the wreckage. Katie walked over to him and wrapped her arms around hims chest again from behind because she knew it made him feel safe. "Hey it's okay." she soothed. "We'll stay here for now. Eventually the rescue workers will come this way asking of there is anyone that needs help and then we will ask about you're parents. There is no need to go looking for trouble though okay. Trust me this is the safest place for now. As long as we have food and water and can stay warm we will be fine." she said and then slipped under his arm so she was facing him. She leaned against the windowsill and rubbed his arms. "I'm here for you." she said and took his hand pulling him into her.

Reece nodded softly wrapping his arms around her. He felt safe with her, and knew that they just had to wait for now. He looked at her carefully, "do you think they will find a place for us both together, or split us up, we're not exactly brother and sister," he said quietly

Katie frowned and hugged him to her. "You let me worry about that. I know the system and I know how to work it. If they ask you, you just tell then you can't make it without me." she said and looked up at him. Katie fully expected them to be put in a group home first until they were probably moved out of state and placed in a home but Katie would do everything in her power to make sure he stayed with her.

Reece nodded in agreement, "okay if you're sure it'll work out, I trust you," he said. He kissed her cheek gently, "should we get some rest now?" he asked quietly. He was still apprehensive about the whole situation, but knew that Katie knew the system and would be able to help him, if it came to that

Katie smiled softly. "I won't let you down Reece." she said softly and nodded as he asked if they should rest. "Yeah." she said knowing it was going to take a while to get to bed and they needed all the rest they could get because she fully expected many sleepless nights.

"Do you want to share a bed? or not tonight?" he asked softly. Reece walked over to his bed slowly

Katie smiled softly and moved over to him and curled into him. "I think I got use to not sleeping alone." she said and laid back looking up at him. They wouldn't be sharing a bed much once they left here and she was already missing him. Katie was sure she would be the one they would call for if Reece needed it though an she knew the first few nights would be the worst for sure.

Reece smiled sweetly, "alright, sounds good," he answered quietly. He climbed into his bed and waited for her. He was anxious about what the morning could potentially hold for them

Katie moved into his arms and kissed his cheek. "Hey it's going to be alright trust me." she said softly. Katie closed her eyes and tried to get some sleep.

Reece closed his eyes and tried to get to sleep. He drifted off to sleep surprisingly easily, and drifted into a pleasant dream. In his dream he walked up behind Katie, slipping his arm around her holding her close, the sun was shining brightly through an open window, a cool summer breeze filling the room. "Hello beautiful," he whispered into her ear.

Katie fell asleep after Reece did feeling him curl up to her was a comfort.

Reece embraced her lightly, and kissed her on the neck. He was lost in his dream world, glad to be with her.

Katie woke in the morning and stretched out hearing the bustle of people outside. She sat up and looked out the window. "Reece wake up." she said and shook his shoulder. "You need to get dressed." she said and rushed out of the room throwing on some cloths and pulling a comb through her hair before she walked out to go talk to the relief workers.

Reece woke abruptly and sat up. "Okay," he called as she ran out. He climbed out of bed and pulled on some clothes quickly

Katie talked with he relief worker for a while before going into talk to Reece. "Okay so for now they are going to relocate us to the shelter nearby where a lot of those that need to be moved are going to." she said and took his hand hugging him. "This is it okay?" she said softly. "Come on grab anything you might need or want and let's get going." she said and let him go to run up the stairs to grab the suitcase she had packed for herself.
