Emery furrowed her brow before letting out a soft laugh at his suggestion of food. "Burgers." She told him still finding it a bit amusing he'd even offer. She never pegged him for a go with the flow kind of guy. He was always so up tight and ocd. She liked seeing him carefree. It made her relax and actual not think about how wrong this was, or that she'd regret it later when he went back to just being her professor. But right now she'd just enjoy being in his company.

Mason smiled softly, and handed the burgers to her as he headed out of the drive-thru. He made a few turns, it eventually led them towards the overlook. Mason could sense she was beginning to piece together where they were headed, after all there was a commonly known make-out spot nearby. He grew nervous, hoping she wouldn't accuse him of anything, before he managed to get there.

He took a side road, that snaked off the main road that lead to the make-out spot. "We are almost there," he said softly. He relaxed slightly, and a small smile cracked across his face as he pulled his car up into the spot. "It's only a short walk, I promise," he said lightly. Mason shut the car off, and the minute he did, the world seemed to go silent, no traffic noise, no honking, no buzz from power lines, just the occasional call of a cricket, or owl. He walked around the car and opened her door for her.

Emery wasn't to familiar with where he was driving. After all she wasn't from around her, but when he pulled of the main road and head into a wooded thicket. She knew where they were most likely headed. They didn't call them make out points for not reasons. Most of the times it was because some guy was trying to get luck so he brought a girl out to see the beauty of the night sky. And it would make her feel like swooning. However she didn't take Mr. Carter as the type of guy to go to make out spots. But she'd been wrong before, when he opened her door she stepped out. Holding her burger to her chest she did her best follow him with out tripping or falling. "Why this spot?" She questioned him, knowing that it was weird how far they were going just for a spot to see. She knew it had to have some special meaning or held some special memories for him.

Mason smiled softly, as she walked with him. He helped her stay on the track and led her up to a small spot, that overlooked most of the city. He sat down, and smiled at her, "I used to bring Jess here," he said lightly. He pointed out to the city, "you can see everything from here, except one part of the city, one you are probably familiar with," he began. He pointed to a tall tree that obscured a part of the view, "right behind him," he said softly.

He put a small blanket down on the ground, and invited her to sit. "We used to just sit here, and wait, sometimes till morning, the sunrise here is amazing," he said softly. He got his own burger out, and just sat, quietly, he was sure she would have several more questions. Questions, he wasn't sure he wanted to have to think about.

Listening to his words she was surprised to hear him actually tell her about his life. When he pointed out the tree blocking part of the town she smiled noticing the hospital was in the direction. "It's beautiful here." She said sit down upon the blanket, placing her burger in her lap. She looked over the city a place she now called home. It was so different to see it from here. "You said used to?" She didn't want to pry into his life, but she wanted to know does that mean they broke up or just to busy. She didn't want to be creeping around with another woman's man. No matter how much she liked him. "You don't have to tell me." She quickly told him, knowing that it was none of her business.

Mason was glad she sat down with him. "Yeah it's really peaceful here," he said softly. Her question, he supposed was the first one she would pick up on. He sighed softly, and thought for a moment, "It's been a little over a year at this point," he said lightly. He sat back, it was clear on his face, talking about that topic was hard still. He blinked slightly, "how about we go question for question?" he asked her, he wanted to take this opportunity to learn more about her. He waited for her answer, "I suppose that also counts as my question too," he added chuckled lightly.

Emery looked at him, she could see the discomfort on his face. However he seemed to push it aside to suggest they trade questions. "So what if you don't want to answer the question?" She asked for her question, not that she cared that he asked her questions. But she wasn't going to be doing all the answering of questions. Grabbing her burger she unwrapped it before taking a bite from it. She was supposed to have dinner with Hunter, but with the way that went they never got around to ordering anything as he'd suggested they go somewhere else to eat. It was the first red flag she got from him.

Mason sat thinking for a moment, "how about the person who answers the least amount of questions owes the other one a coffee tomorrow morning?" he suggested lightly. It was a simple negative, but one that wasn't to awkward of signed either of them up for something inappropriate. He looked out at the city, "my first question I suppose, is what stage were you before your had surgery?" he asked.

Emery wondered if that was why he was doing this because she'd had cancer. She couldn't quite figure this guy out. "Stage 1 Breast Cancer." She told him, knowing that it was normal to announce the type of cancer you have. Also she knew he'd more than likely ask what type of cancer she'd had. "Are you single?" She asked, knowing that once it was out there she couldn't take it back. But it was bugging her, she had to know if he was off limits.

Mason nodded softly, glad that she only had stage one. "That's good it's mean you caught it early," he said softly. He found himself smiling softly at her next question, he guessed he should of seen it coming. He just didn't know how he wanted to answer it. He sat back, "Sadly, yes, I guess you would say I am single," he told her. He shifted slightly, "question two, what is your ideal holiday, pretending you had never had cancer, what would you want to do?" he asked. It was one of the thought experiments and games he used to play with Jess. If you weren't sick, where would we travel to next week?

When he said sadly before answering she couldn't help but raising a brow. It seemed like a touchy subject. The fact he wished he was still in a relationship and that he'd not visited their spot for over a year, meant he'd been single a while now. But she wasn't going to pry, thought he first thoughts was thank god. She felt herself relax a bit now knowing he wasn't taken. "Ideal holiday?" She questioned trying to think of an answer for it. "Travel abroad, go crazy Italy, France, Spain, Paris. Where ever money takes me." She shrugged. "Why teaching?" She questioned him.

Mason chuckled softly, "That's a lovely idea, personally I'd pick Sicily," he said softly. He relaxed slightly, becoming more comfortable with sharing this spot with her. He looked at her, "I suppose, it's because it is what we both shared, I'm just sad that it was me that got to complete the dream, she would have made an amazing teacher," he said softly. He looked at her, "She wanted to teach first grade, a braver person than me," he added. He let the comment hang for a brief moment, "I suppose she had to be, to remain so cheerful," he said quietly.

He thought for a moment what his question should be, "I suppose I don't have to ask if your single, given where I rescued you from, but how about, have you got any crushes?" he asked.

Emery listened to him knowing that there was quite a bit of information in what he was saying. And it didn't take someone with half a brain to understand. So he'd lost his girlfriend. She wanted to question how but that felt way to personal. She let it drop before feeling her ears turn red at his question. How was she suppose to answer that, "one would assume that they'd try to date their crushes." She hinted, not answering the question with who but answering it none the less. "What's your favorite color?" She questioned not knowing what else to ask, every thing seemed so taboo.

Mason nodded lightly, and smiled at her answer, so she wanted to try date her crush. He thought about her question for a moment, his eyes looking over her for a moment. He blushed softly, and smiled, "I quite like blue, the lighter shade," he said softly. He chuckled slightly, more, "kinda like your eyes, if I'm honest," he added. He paused for a moment, "I suppose it's time, to just tell you," he said sucking in a breath. He put his hand on her leg gently, a gesture that could be seen to lead to a sexual or intimate move.

Mason smiled gently, "My fiancee, Jess she umm, wasn't quite as lucky as you, she lost her battle to stage 4 fourteen months ago," he said softly. He froze, and wondered how she would take it, he'd just let the cat out of the bag, a very serious one, at that.

Emery felt a blush filter on her cheeks as he told her her eyes where his favorite color. Tucking her head she froze when his hand placed on her leg. Though she lifted her eyes to meet his face. She wasn't sure what he meant when he should tell her. It had here a bit worried, but she waited until he spoke again. "Oh, god I'm so sorry." She told him, placing her hand on top of his. She knew the hurt and devastation that came with losing the battle of cancer. It had been something her doctors had tried to prepare her family and friends for. "I can't imagine what you're feeling right now." She told him, being honest. She didn't know what to say to him either. Like she was happy he felt connected enough to share with her, but the torment he must be facing. She wanted to hold him and tell him everything was going to be alright. But she couldn't bring herself to do so. She knew that for him it wasn't okay, that love wouldn't fade.

Mason's pain ease a little as she placed her hand on his. He smiled softly, "it's okay, really, I didn't want to bring you down, I just thought you should know," he said softly. He smiled gently, "this place was ours, we came here whenever she wanted to take her mind off of everything, or just to chat," he said lightly. He sat for another moment, "it always made her feel better, being able to work it out of her system, and just disconnect from that place we spent far too much time at," he said lightly. "At least, she managed to make it seem like this place helped, even if it didn't," he said.

He sat for a little while, trying to think of what to say, or do. He thought for a moment, and then finally decided. Mason shifted on the blanket, and put his arm around her back gently, before lying back on the blanket with her. "So tell me, is it working for you?" he asked.

Having a lot place on her plate, she thought over everything he'd told her. And though it was a lot to take in, it was baggage that came with him. It was hurt he was dealing with on his own. And hearing he wanted to share something that was just the two of theirs with her, it touched her. And though her mind was full of everything he'd told her so far, she felt at peace. They sat in silence for a bit, her just playing over everything he'd said through the course of the night. Still trying to understand the man next to her. When he place his arm around her she turned to look up at him, before letting him pull her backwards. Laying down she was cuddled up to his chest, and she felt her heart in her throat. "It is." She whispered out, knowing that this had to be the prefect ending to horrible night she'd had.

Mason relaxed somewhat when she didn't freak out when he pulled her into an embrace. He smiled and nodded, "Good I'm glad," he said softly. He waited for a moment, "okay, now lets just stay here, and not think about the C word, the only thing you are allowed to ask, is to be taken home," he said jokingly. He closed his eyes, knowing that nothing more really needed to be said tonight. He lay there with his arm wrapped loosely around her waist.

Mason was careful not to shift his hand in a suggestive way towards her pants, or her breasts. After all, he wasn't looking at taking advantage of her, he just hoped that this would make her memory of tonight not include whatever douche-bag she'd been on a date with.

Emery couldn't help but let out a soft laugh as he told her she wasn't allowed to asked anymore questions, but take me home. "Someone's feeling sure of himself." She teased him, knowing she'd validated their time together. And that their wasn't anything to talk about, like where was this going. Was it just for tonight? How should they proceed, with him being her Professor. It was all new, but they had time to work on things. So for now she'd let him have his night and not pesture him with questions. Turning more on her side she faced him, laying her head on his arm as she looked up at him.

Mason smiled softly, feeling even more comfortable as she rolled onto her side, and looked up at him. He looked into her eyes for a moment, "A little, but I suppose if you have a burning question, or something you really need to let me know, you can say it," he said softly. As he lay there, his thoughts went to the voicemail she'd left the other night. He blushed deeply as he thought about it, and whether he should question her about it, or let her know she'd left it.

He smiled softly his hand moving to play with her hair lightly, he didn't want to ruin the night by bringing it up.
