I don't think its needed and sex scenes are extremely difficult to write without making them sound...slutty. I've read two decent sex scenes one by Mary Janice Davidson and one by my friend Steph, but thats cause she's a perv and only let me see it.

Well, sex can be an important part of the story or a relationship in the story. I don't write it, but other people may, which is their choice. If you're awkward with reading it, you don't have to. You can skip over it.

Sometimes slutty is the point. Sometimes it's not.
I've read lots of sex scenes that didn't sound slutty.
And I've read lots that did, but should have.
If the writer thinks it's needed, then most of the time it is.
The writer decides what is needed in his/her story, not the reader.
They are the creator. Much like God.
God decided people needed to have sex.
The story creator can decided whether or not it is needed in the story as well. They are the God of their story.

I actually do that sometimes. I hate it when the sex ruins the story.
You get a perfectly nice story with complicated lovely plot and then the writer puts in a sex scene out of nowhere. Gives me the feeling that the sex is there just because the majority of the readers couldn't get the plot anyway so the writer had to do something to get his story read. XD I hate it when the sex is there just to entertain the audience. No-one asked for it, it's just unnecessary, it has nothing to do with how the story goes, but it's there because it's hot.
But we all know that I'm a mean snob so you shouldn't listen to me and continue to write sex the way you like to write it.

    I agree,
I hate the censors they have on LJ.
It really pisses me off when I'm reading a
story then all of the sudden a chapter with sex
comes up and that stupid 'you have to be above
18' screen pops up at a chapter with sex in it. Or I just
find a interesting one-shot I want to read and the censor
    comes up. Disgust

I don't think it's needed. I mean, I understand that people have a right to express themsleves and sometimes have to write a ty story, but we don't have to read it.

    I completely agree.

I personally dislike that type of story most of the time, because the ones I've started are deviod of a plot. In the styles I read, a ual relationship is based on romance.
    Quote
... A simple sentence about a honeymoon cottage with its curains drawn for days on end can say more about passion than a catalog of ual particulars.
    - Patricia T. O'Conner, Words Fail Me

I'm kind of reminded of Breaking Dawn... I think it's a perfect example.

I kind of always thought sex was only really neccessary when it aids in character development, or is able to symbolize something significant to the plot.

I mean, yeah, sticking a sex scene in randomly is pretty pointless, but it can be pretty powerful if written well enough, and if it's important to the plot.

Like, there's this book called Music For Torching, and there's a very small sex scene in it at one point, where the husband and wife are setting up a couch so a guest can sleep on it; right in the middle of it, they start having sex, but it doesn't last long, because the wife starts crying, and the husband just seems sad as well; this wasn't a pointless sex scene, it was supposed to show to the reader how miserable both the characters were and how horrible their marriage had become, which was basically where the entire plot of the book had stemmed from: the dying condition of their marriage.

Censoring sex right out of the story is just stupid. Everybody eventually has sex, and knows what it is; why even bother trying to hide it from the reader?

Here's the thing with whether or not you want to see sex in a story:
    It doesn't matter.

If you don't want sex in stories, people will still put it in stories.
Some people don't want to see slash in stories; we still have it.
Some people don't want to see het in stories; we still have it.
Some people don't want to see fanfiction; we still have it.
Some people don't want to see incest; we still have it.
Some people don't want to see badly-written shit; we still have it.

The point is, people will write what they write.
And if you don't want to read it, you don't have to.

People have the right to write whatever the hell they want.
Sex is pretty unavoidable in life, not just stories.

    Is it necessary?
Is far as I'm concerned, yes absolutely.
In fact I'd probably go as far to say that I sometimes won't even read a story if I know there will be no sex.

Not because I'mjust a horny teenager just for the sheer fact that It's key in a relationship and it also gives an insight into the character's mind in some ways.

God created humans so they could have sex and reproduce. Every living this does it, in someway shape or form. So, fictional characters should be able to do the same.

I once wrote a sex scene and it was a very hard thing to do, with me still being a virgin. I had no idea if I was explaining it right, because of the fact it has never happened to me.

I think, personally, yes they are, and certainly can make a story liven up and create love between two characters, or more, if you like that sorta thing. Sex is a beautiful thing and it should be written well for it to be great.

I'm not sure if its just me or not but I've realised that when I was younger and even then you could tell there was some kind of romance crap was going on, just them kissing at the end was enough to make me happy. But now I've read a few mature books which you know have sex scenes, and kissing is kind of common place, it kind of makes it seem complete when they do have sex, I'm not bothered if its graphic or if they just let you know that it's happened.

I don't know how else to explain it, it might be the way the writer puts it...Gah I hate it when I can't explain what I mean.

I'll try again, in some romances, or what ever you might want to call it the climax near the end of the book for the relationship might be a kiss, but for others where there is kissing occurring often enough, for the relationship to mature or get to the next level it needs something else to reach the climax for the end of the book, and quite often that climax would be sex.

    I feel so crude now.

Put it this way; there's plenty of decent stories on here that don't have sex in them, so if you don't like reading sex, either skip over it, or go read one of them.

If you don;t want to read it, then here's an idea: there's this button on the top of your browser that says "BACK". Click it. Kthankbai.

    I like it...sometimes.

I like metaphoric sex ::shifty Does that make sense? Not raunchy, and detailed. And certain words turn me off.

Is sex in stories really necessary?

    My answer:
    ...Duh. :file:
