I think sex in stories is only necessary to help the story along, not to fill up those gaps between chapters or to get more readership. And when it is done, it shouldn't be used occasionally, as it becomes a sort of lacklustre, with far too much emphasis on the sex than on the characters and the underlying them of the story.

How detailed it is is up to the author and what sort of style it is, also.

If readers don't like it or don't find it necessary, then they should just skip over it. Censoring something natural is a bit stupid especially if it plays a big part in any twist or development of characters or stories.

I'm fine with it Thumb up

But if it's far too graphic - like explaining absolutely everything they did and where they touched and everything they said and every last little detail then I'll just be :|

Sometimes a story with nothing in it except for sex [without reading between the lines] can be a beautiful story. It's the things that aren't said [but are written between the lines] that can paint a beautiful relationship.

Sex is hardly ever just about the sex.

    Agreed.

And sometimes, sex is needed for the storyline or it just... doesn't go right.

I, generally, write about adults. Young adults, yes, but generally I write about adults. And a lot of adults have sex.

Also, I write about boys that are either young adults or teenagers. They're horny.

I think sex is sometimes neccessary in a story, but you don't have to actually go into detail - unless that's needed for the story.

But sometimes, I get uncomfortable writing the sex scenes because I feel like it cheapens the story, even though I know it doesn't. I just don't really think I'm good enough at writing them.

One of my favorite Ryden stories ever has very explicit sex. And not just explicit sexual scenes, but extreme explicit sexual scenes. It's still an absolutely beautiful piece of work.

Also, if you've ever been to Literotica.com, then you'll know the stuff on this site is fucking tame.
    Yes, I do agree.
Can I have the link to the story?

If you are writing a slash or a femmeslash, then of course at some point it would seem logical to include some sort of sex scene.
But if it's a normal story, I don't think it's really needed, unless it's extremely well writen.

I dont mind people writing sex. I dont mind reading sex. Except slash it just bores me now. And I really suck at witing sex so if I can help it then I dont.

The only sex I have ever written is in a one shot I posted. That took me like a week and a half to write and I still say its suckish.

How would you define a normal story? By it being het? Why would you not put sex in a het story, but you would in a slash/femmeslash story?

Any sex that's included needs to be well written or very necessary to the plot. Even both.

By normal story I meant not a femme, slash, or het. :shifty
    That was bad wording really...

^ Oh, you mean without a pairing?
    Well, that would work.

In romantic stories or stories with pairings (depending on age, tone, and circumstance) even if you don't write sex scene I think the acknowledgment of sex is necessary, even if it's not explicitly said that they are acknowledging the existence of sex.

As long as it's not in every chapter and it supports the story then it's fine. That's my take on it, but if it's every second chapter or something it gets kind of boring...where's the build up etc?

Yeah, it's fine if it's part of the storyline. I love the build up too, the sexual tension, I think if you want it to happen it's even better. You can't have them going at it in chapter two if they only met in chapter one, but you also can't hold out forever, either.

I like when the story is either:
-Based around sex. Not necessarily a PWP, but just...then sex every other chapter is okay.
    Or.
-Big build up to the one and only sex scene in the whole story. It's just so amazing when pulled off well.

I quite like what the artist and writer for one of my favorite webcomics, "Anders Loves Maria," said about all of the sex that tends to be featured in her webcomic: I hope you guys don’t think this is turning into a dirty comic. It’s not my intention. I just want to give an honest look at relationships and it’s hard to do that without getting into the gritty, nasty stuff. That's the sort of sex I want to see in a story. I'm not really one to read (or write) a story for the sake of the sex alone; it just doesn't appeal to me. But if we're dealing with an actual relationship, sometimes you owe it to realism to feature sex. Even if there isn't an actual "relationship" involved, and it's just sex, I just prefer it to not be the main focus. But, like I said, that's just me.

By the way, "Anders Loves Maria" is pretty awesome, but I wouldn't suggest it if you're not fond of seeing a cartoon guy's penis every few pages.

I don't show sex in my stories, because, well, I don't want to. I show rape though, to portray the emotional side of it.

    It depends on the story.
Some stories really need it whereas others don't.

I really hate it when there are stories where the sexual tension just keeps building up but there is never any sex.
Also, I hate it when authors throw in sex where it shouldn't be.
