I haven't written a story that even insinuates sex in years. It's mostly just because in the type of stories I've been writing most recently it just wouldn't fit, and the sexual tension works a lot better anyway.

In a new story I'm working on, it is important. It's the inevitability of the characters having sex at some point that makes the whole plot. But it works that way, that's the point.

The whole 'sex scenes for the sake of it' doesn't really bother me when I'm reading. Sometimes sex is just for the sake of it... It kind of shows a realistic relationship. Though when it's over done it gets a little boring.

I love stories than have tons of sex and no build-up to it.
I like it when the sex is the catalyst and the sex is the build up, not what is being built up to.
It's just... gorgeous and beautiful and so fucking realistic that you would have these two characters that are fucking like crazy because what they need is the emotions and the opening up of each other, but they haven't figured out how to get there yet except through sex.
Sex as a catalyst astounds me.

    From dictionary.com

I like reading sex scenes that don't neccessarily look like sex scenes.
As in, they aren't so graphic that there's all of this 'pounding' and ..stuff, but you still know that the two characters are having sex, it's just quite abstract?
    /makes no sense.

I've stopped writing sex into the only story of mine that actually had it. :tehe:
I prefer leaving it to people who are better than me.

^ I get what you mean, don't worry.
I can't write scenes like that but I lovelovelove reading them.
For me, I either have to write full-blown sex, or...nothing.

very controversial... in my story, there is TALK of sex, but that's as far as i go. as for reading stories, it depends on how the author makes it seem. if they make it awkward for the characters, i like it. but if it's out of "love", no way.

Can you not have awkward sex out of "love"?
I'm quite certain I've written and read it before.

That's the only sex I really get into, and the only kind of way I prefer to write it. I know totally what you mean. There's only one sex scene I've written in about a year and I tried to make it as inexplicit and abstract as possible... still don't really know if I pulled it off how I meant to, but I'm quite pleased with it all the same.

I think it's up to the author.
As long as the writer gives a suitable rating for their story,
then this shouldn't be a problem.
If you don't like reading about sex, then don't.

My sex scenes come off as nerdy and elbow-y, if you know what I mean <.< Or just plain disinterested. Not sure how to fix that.

Personally, I'm not into sex scenes. But that's just me.

If I had to choose, I'd agree with Tyler Durden. and want something abstract. Not the, "He did this... then she did this... then this happened" because that just makes it really awkward.

I agree with the people who are for sex in stories. I admit I like to write sex scenes and I like them to be very well written. I think sex is something that is very essential in the character's development. And there's sex everywhere, even if a person is writing about someone that is sustaining abstinence or if they're writing about someone who has sex very often, you're still at least mentioning sex. It might be subtle but you still mention it through maybe the character's words or actions. And another reason why it's important to the character's development is that if this person is a virgin she probably would try to post-pone until he/she is sure of the person they're with while the character who's willingly had sex before may not be so reluctant. And these said characters versus a character who has been raped might have a bit of a hard time communicating with the opposite sex (or same sex even). So, you see, it's important to character development...

And as others have said, people [in general] like sex, whether or not they've had sex themselves, people like hearing about sex. Face it, if a friend of yours came up to you and said they finally did "it" with their long time boyfriend, you'd want to know the juicy and gory details of it all. You'd ask if that person was good, you'd ask how they felt, etc. I know I would. And hell, just look at Hollywood's perception during movies, look how loose R rated movies have gotten, hell, I went and saw Watchmen and there was a pretty intense sex scene in it, and a blue p***s in it! As well as a potential rape scene and two lesbians in bed with each other (though dead)...

    And again, as everyone has said, we're not say you're been forced to watch or read sex scenes but maybe you shouldn't be so closed-minded to them because fictionally or not you will more than likely run into sex throughout your daily life. But that's just a suggestion, you'd don't have to listen to me. ^^;;

Well, these are just my opinions on it... It is what you asked for right? =/

I like to think people write for themselves, rather than writing for an audience or whatever.

Aldo, does anyone know of any well written het sex-scenes? I'm about to write one, and I'm in need of a bit of guidance, as I'm generally awful at it.

Sometime you need it in stories.
    Fan fics as an example.
I mean if you're writing a story about Vince Neil
from Motley Crue. The dude was a sex addict. He honestly
was, so if you writing about him and it's from a girls point of view
who hung around him for long periods of time chances are at least once
they're gonna have meaningless sex, at least one.
I'm sorry but it's everywhere, books, tv, music. Everywhere.

I enjoy reading and writing sex. Considering I've never had it, I read a lot, and make sure I at least know the anatomy so I know what makes sense and what doesn't. For me, most of the time, sex is essential to the plot and or characterisation of my characters. It isn't meaningless, and either effects circumstances within certain relationships, or is the culmination of certain personalities clashing, or melding with each other. If that makes any sense.

For most of my stories, the sex is a pretty neccessary aspect of the story, and understanding it. I also feel that if I don't put as much effort into describing the details in a sex chapter as I do the non-sex chapters, then I'm letting myself down and not making myself be a better writer. If I'm going to write something, I'm going to do it to the best of my ability; sex chapter or not.

A lot of my stories would fall apart without sex. Sex can be the driving point for my stories.

Personally, I probably couldn't write a sex scene but I'm just fine reading them.
I agree with a lot of other people when they say that sex can explain feelings that can't be explained another way.
Sex is just one of those things that's emotional and physical so it's a good balance if it's done correctly.
