I'm getting a lot less reviews so I have time to thank people individually, but I also include one in the "first comment" that I leave on all my stories.

Not getting at least one thank you discourages me from commenting on their other works.
I think the same could be said for an author not receiving comments sometimes.

I may be biased but I think the most important part is the writing and then leaving a review comes second and then thanking comes third.

I honestly don't give a damn if I get a thank you for a review because I believe my review is a thank you to the author/writer for sharing their work.

In the author's note of the final chapter, I put a mass thank you. If someone gives some really good constructive criticism, I thank them personally. Finally, readers who follow me to ever story get a special mention for loyalty =D

I hardly get comments, so personally thakning is a lot easier and I prefer it like that.
Because I really don't get as much, I appreciate them very much.
So I say thank you in a comment on their profiles rather than on the story forum.

    In Love
I like them to know I appreciate the comments.
I am the exact same way. I like to leave them the thank you profile comment. In my opinion, it's really nice, and I know I love to be thanked on my profile when I comment a story. Cute

I thank people if I can see they put a lot of time and care into a comment. If it's just a comment that says it was good and that they liked it, I generally won't say thank you. I always try to thank the people that review my stories on The Story Review Game.

And this is going to sound bad but i also am always sure to thank people who have commented on my stories if I really respect them as writers.

I always give them, I think it's polite. But I understand not doing it if you have 20 pages of comments, I have like five readers Rolling Eyes

I always reply to reviews and comments on the comment page, not a lot of work since I don't get a lot XD. In the AN, if I had gotten reviews and nice comments in the previous chapter I would thank the readers, but not each one in the AN.

I thank almost all the comments I get, but by profile comment. :)
I find the thank yous on the comment pages pointless - only the author gets the notification, so why thank that way?

But, on one of my stories, someone comments every chapter but it says the same exact thing and I'm starting to doubt that they even read the story, so I stopped thanking them, but feel bad for it. Oh, and comments that are just one word or a smiley face I can't bring myself to thank for.

If all you do is leave a ":D" face, why comment?

I reply to any and all of the comments/reviews on my stories because I like to let my readers know that I appreciate each individual's time to not only read, but also to comment on the story.

Whenever I respond to a story, I also try to point out things I liked/didn't like, and I do try to put effort into my comments. So when an author doesn't respond to my comment on their story, I feel like they didn't care and it makes me inclined not to comment on their stories anymore.

I feel like laughing when people are writing things like, "I only get like, 5 comments for each chapter update, so I make sure I thank them." I would absolutely love to get five comments for each chapter update! That's a lot!

I usually try to thank everyone individually, and I try to stir up conversation, but I find the conversation is lost. Oh well. But yeah, I appreciate each reader I have so much, but if they're commenting every chapter and it's just, "This is so good! More!" I tend to stop thanking them as much because I don't know what to say...

I'm kind of neutral to whether or not I get a thank you back when I comment a story.

I tend to thank people, however if someone comments a lot, and their comments are lacking in my opinion, I tend to stop thanking them. I usually just post 'Thank you for the story comment!' or something along those lines, however if someone says something that properly gets to me (in a good way!) I will add on something else. I don't always thank people, but I think it's just nice.

If the reviewer asked a question about the story or left a lengthy review, I'll send them a PM saying thanks for the review or answering their question(s). Otherwise, I used to just say "Thanks to those who commented" in the AN. I've stopped doing that now, though. Shifty

I always leave a thank you on anyone who comment's profile. I really appreciate any feedback I get. Plus, once, I left a comment on a story that had like, 30 pages of comments, and the author replied with a thank you; actually, the same author did that for another one of her stories with many comments. Seeing that just showed me that if other people with far more popular stories can take the time to reply, I need to as well.
But I never force myself to give a thanks, since I'm always genuinely happy for comments Very Happy

I don't really get offended if I don't get a thank you. It's strange to me, though, because I tend to get thank yous from the people with popular stories, while people with only one or two comments hardly ever say thanks, and it's not as if I'm just leaving them a comment that says "UPDATE!". I try to comment on a few specific things that I liked about the story, but...whatever Laughing

I always leave a thank you comment here and there. I like my readers to know how much I appreciate them reading my story and their feedback. I never feel like I have to give a thank you comment though. I just do. I love all the comments I get from readers. Mr. Green

I like getting them. I don't tend to read stories on here but every few months I'll go through say Confessions or WAYT or threads I use alot and read/comment 20-50 users, so after I've read and commented that many stories the odd thank you is nice to see. I don't expect them but it makes all the reading and commenting that little bit nicer on my part XD

I think it's a nice thing to do but it shouldn't have to be compulsory or expected. Makes it less sincere that way. I usually do it nowadays for reviews that are particularly striking or insightful.

I tend to thank people who read/comment my stuff when
    A) It's a fan fictional story and they still read it and leave a nice comment even though they had NO IDEA who it's about.
    B) They leave a helpful comment in what I can do to improve my writing
    C) They're comment makes me laugh/inspires me for another chapter/story.
