She was undeniably a pretty little thing, although her neat hair was now a tangled mess. She pushed it out of her face, before bending down to pick up her beret. When she looked up, Jack caught her ocean-green eyes.

And then it happened.

Jack Frost is a timeless classic, which tells of a man or boy responsible for bringing the snow to big cities, the frost to the windows, and the ice to the roads. There are many spins on this classic, but none as whimsical as that told by the recent movie, Rise of the Guardians.

In A Nip of Frost, notweirdbutunique puts a spin on the wonderful character that Rise of the Guardians created. Unlike most stories of Jack Frost, this variant of Old Man Winter is a teenage boy, no older than 18, who spends his time watching children play in the snow. He watches in wonder at their happy faces, thrilled at the joy he brings them, but unable to participate himself.

Doomed to never be seen by another, Jack walks the world alone. He has been alone so long that he has begun to accept it, as he knows it is his fate, but when he sees Alaska, her bright green eyes standing out against the white of the snow, he suddenly doesn’t want to be alone anymore.

A Nip of Frost is a fantastic fan fiction, which gives a brilliant side story to the tale of Jack Frost. As the tale fits perfectly with the original Jack Frost character, it feels as though the short story could fit right along with the original legends, even though it has a fun, unique spin.

Notweirdbutunique’s incredible writing style makes the story come to life, and her seamless switch between present day Jack and the Jack of the past only add to the depth of the story.

Completed at just over two thousand words, A Nip of Frost is a wonderful, quick read, and I highly recommend this short story.
