Clary is on a mission to save her mother. Madeleine, a friend of her mother, is willing to show Clary how to wake her mother from her coma. Clary must travel to Alicante in Idris - the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters, also known as the City of Glass because of it’s glass towers that guard the city - to find the cure.

However, Jace thinks it would be too dangerous for Clary to enter Idris, and lies to her about when he and the Lightwoods are leaving. Simon visits Jace before he leaves for Alicante and, due to an unforeseen attack at the Institute, Simon is pulled into the portal to Idris.

Instead of Simon being transported home, he is sent to prison and left without blood, while Clary is busy creating new runes to transport herself to Alicante. Unaware that entering the City of Glass without permission is punishable by death, Clary is forced to stay with Luke’s sister and is wary of the new Inquisitor, who seems just as terrifying as the last one.

In Idris Clary meets Sebastian, a charming Shadowhunter who lived in Paris as an orphan but travelled to Alicante to stay with his cousin, Aline. Clary and Sebastian discover more about Clary’s past and try to find a way to save Clary’s mother, while Clary struggles with her jealousy over the seemingly romantic relationship between Jace and Aline.

Valentine attacks the city, forcing werewolves, vampires, fey and Shadowhunters to join together to fight his army of demons. His search for the third mortal instrument continues, and the young Shadowhunters must find it before he does.

‘The City of Glass’ certainly provides the reader with excitement throughout the entire book, leaving them satisfied with the ending. The twists are better than ever, and Cassandra Clare’s writing is just as brilliant. Fans of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ series will not be disappointed, although they will probably be left wishing the series would continue.
