Emma is just as surprised as everyone else when she discovers she's illegally pregnant, but she has an opinion that she feels is the most important, regardless of what her friends and family think. She's very shy and reserved around people that aren't her close friends, and she doesn't respond well to all the attention she recieves. She tries her best to work around the strict and complicated ways of her father, one of the Evaluators that holds the most power in society.

Ben has been in love with Emma for as long as he can remember, and he only wants what is best for her and their baby. He's passionate about the things he values most, like his friends and family. He struggles to find the right solutions, and sometimes his methods don't work out. He does everything he can to please Mr. Sullivan, as well as maintain a relationship with the Evaluator's daughter.

Sara is the outgoing, though sensitive best friend of Emma and twin sister of Sam. She's well known by many people, but she enjoys the company of her closest friends the most. That's why she takes it so hard when she finds out Emma is hiding the biggest news of her life from her, and feels betrayed by her best friend. Eventually, she comes around and stands by Emma like any good friend would.

As Ben's best friend, he understands that Emma/Sully is off limits, especially after she gets pregnant. However, he becomes better friends with her when Ben can't be there to protect her. He stands in as Emma's bodyguard, as well as her moral support. His laid-back and humorous nature helps Emma get through the stressful and much too grown-up qualities her life is taking on.

From an Evaluator's perspective, Emma's pregnancy is completely unacceptable. His daughter's situation is like nothing anyone has ever seen before, and Mr. Sullivan has the most difficult time accepting the truth. He eventually realizes that his daughter should come first, before any sort of law that was clouding his judgement before. He'll go as far as breaking it to keep Emma safe from harm.

Audree Stevens is the doctor assigned to Emma's unique case, and she doesn't take it lightly. As a young and somewhat inexperienced doctor, she comes across to Ben and Emma as unreliable. Dr. Stevens wins their hearts easily after a few visits, and plays a vital part in Emma's decisions regarding her baby.
