Though she is barely eighteen, Veronica is almost solely responsible for keeping Polanski Funeral Home up and running. After the death of her mother, she dropped out of high school and obtained her GED in order to help her father out with the family business, though she takes some classes at a local community college. She is tough and very independent, as well as bitingly sarcastic. She is very gaurded and a bit jaded, giving most the impression that she is cold, but really, she is very caring.

Jake is a very down to earth kind of guy, getting along very well with just about everyone he meets. He's a second semester college freshman, though he's not entirely sure what he wants to do with his life yet. He is very intelligent in addition to being the campus heart-throb. However, despite his easy-going nature, he's got his own fair share of secrets.

Matt is Veronica's oldest brother, and also Liz's boyfriend. Matt is very honest and upfront about everything, whether you want the truth or not. This is a trait that sometimes comes off as rude, though he means well. He works as a cashier at the Shell Station up the street from his family's funeral home, though he has his own apartment. He is extremely protective of Veronica and they get along really well.

Liz is Veronica's best friend and Matt's girlfriend. Like Matt, Liz has a very 'tell it like it is' personality. Liz and Veronica became friends based on their mutual hatred of the same things, and so it goes without saying that she is incredibly opinionated. She works at a thrift store and is also going to school to obtain her cosmetology license. She comes from a large, close-knit family so she values loyalty above all else.

Alexander is Veronica's other older brother. He lives with his friend Ryan, but goes to the same community college as Veronica and Jake. He is a Marine and originally intended to be a business major and follow in his father's footsteps, though he eventually decided that he wanted to major in something revolving around fitness. He's the party guy among his friends, so fun usually follows him around. Though he is not as close with Veronica as Matt, he is still very protective of her.

Michael is the father of the Polanski kids. Once very vibrant and joking, he seems to have lost his sense of humor after the death of his wife about a year and a half ago. Since then, he has immersed himself in his work as a funeral director. He loves his kids, though he doesn't know how to reach out to his sons, and he treats Veronica as a fully grown adult rather than as a teenager. Undeniably, he feels lost.

Dayna is one of Jake's oldest friends. She graduated in the same class as Liz and knew Veronica as well. She is what most would call a slut, and is very two-faced. She is also a pathalogical liar, and because Jake has been friends with her for so long, he is easy to take advantage of, the type of person Dayna loves.

Andrea is Veronica's cousin, and at one time they were very close. Though Andrea has a heart of gold, she allows herself to get taken advantage of easily, and also sometimes unwittingly drags other people into her messes. Her relationship with Veronica was first wounded by her girlfriend at the time, who isolated Andrea from her friends. Most recently, they have been distanced by Andrea asking if a friend could stay with Veronica, who ultimately took advantage of the Polanskis' hospitality.

Michelle is Jake's younger sister, though they are very close in age since they are Irish twins. She has a positive and warm personality, and is hard not to like. She is constantly busy, and has already achieved a lot of success scholastically and with work. She is getting ready to move to Chicago in the summer. Michelle has a heart of gold and is very easy to talk to.

Hannah is Jake's mom. She can be very rigid, and other times she can be very overbearing towards her children. She's not a wonderfully warm and accepting person. Ironically, she is also Veronica's gynecologist.
