Patriarch of the Hatfield clan, Devil Anse is as stoic and intimidating as they come. His reputation as a stern captain in the Confederate Army carried over to his home life after the war and his rules his large extended family with an iron fist. Justice is his top priority, blood for blood, though he draws the line at harming the innocent. With the prosperity of his timber yard, Devil Anse and the Hatfields live comfortably on the West Virginia side of the Tug Fork river.

Levicy Hatfield does her duty as a wife to Devil Anse and a mother to Johnse, Cap, Nancy, Robert E and the rest of the children. She knows not to meddle in the business of Anse, but when she puts her foot down, he listens. Levicy loves her children and is fiercely protective, but also knows that they need to make mistakes in order to learn and grow in the difficult world they live in.

Ellison Hatfield, the youngest brother of Devil Anse, would like nothing more than the silly feud between his family and McCoys to just disappear. Ellison does his best to put out fires before they begin between members of the two family's, while simultaneously watching out for his teenage, illegitimate son, who also suffers with mental deficiencies.

Cotton Top is called so because of the flash of blonde hair on his head - it's an affectionate term, used by his family to counterbalance the names (like 'Mush Head') outsiders call him. Illegitimate and mentally challenged, Cotton idolizes his father and uncles, who all cast a protective watch over him. Cotton likes nothing more than playing with the farm animals, and chasing after the younger kids. He doesn't mind when he's treated like an adult, but understandably struggles to live up to some of the expectations set on him.
