Atonement
Hermione's had a hard life. Her family is dead or lost. Harry, whom she had adopted after her second year, is angry at her for giving him up instead of facing statutory kidnap charges. She has dealt with Azkaban when the Aurors thought she had killed her sisters.
She is sent to an orphanage, the House of Those Forgotten, once she has exhausted all other routes. To her great surprise, she finds that Snape, who runs the orphanage, can be pleasant when he is out of school.
As the only one on record to ever be Sorted into two Houses, she is the target of constant pranks and bullying. It gets so bad she is issued her own room, separate from the other students.
As if that isn't hard enough, she has a terminal type of brain cancer called meningioma. She is not expected to live to twenty.
She must teach Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, Luna Lovegood, and Susan Bones to control their considerable power to control the elements. This is made more difficult by the fact that none of them trust her, like her, or want to listen to her.
This story begins in her fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft adn Wizardry.
Hermione is a battered young woman who longs for the love and acceptance of her peers, although she hides it well. This is the story of a teenager who continues to live when all the odds are stacked against her.
