I totally agree. Five years ago, I was still stuck out '90s boy bands, then American Idiot came out and I got hooked on Green Day, now I listen to whatever I like. I'm the only person in my school that likes My Chem and frankly I don't care

I constantly have to argue with friends of mine that try to convince me that the bands that I like are not 'sellouts'.

Firstly; What exactly is a sellout? I'll tell you.

"Selling out" refers to the compromising of one's integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, 'success' (however defined) or other personal gain.

None of these bands mentioned in this article have ever done this, that I know of. I wish people would stop saying nasty things about them.

Thank you for writing this article. It's not them. It's us and our misunderstanding of how music changes when people grow wiser.

I agree. Like Green Day are in their thirties, have families, so of course they're going to care more about the state of the world. Hence them making "American Idiot."

And also, as for what BelieveMeImLying0234 said about M Shadows. I'm sure he said that jokingly and the journalist didn't do a good job of stating that. He's been with Val for awhile, and I doubt that she'd put up with other girls.

I hear this "sell out" talk alot and I fial to understand why, just because the music of a good band changes over time they are considered to be sell outs all of a sudden. Take my favorite bandm Green Day for example. Great band, great, inspirational music, millions of albums sold, and just because they haven't put out a new album in four years alot of fans are deserting them and saying that they are sellouts. Wrong. They're taking alot of time to put together some great music, and even if American Idiot's follow-up isn't the same type of music as American Idiot or Dookie or Warning, it's still bound to be some pretty good music. It's called variety. people. If every band stuck to the same type of music through their whole careers, music would be boring.

I agree with you on this. I never really thought of it that way, so thanks.
And about Matt not screaming anymore because of his surgery had nothing to do with iim not screaming anymore. If you watch the All Excess dvd, Larry Jacobsonsaid that the surgery had nothing to with it. Matt had already decided that he wanted to do an album that was screaming, another one half screaming half singing and another one to be just singing.

i think you are right about the band members growing up and matureing and other kids growing up and into new things and sounds. But there is one thing i seriously have to disagree on. M.Shadows and the rest of the band decided they didn't want to scream anymore. If you watch their DVD their producer even said this so really they aren't sell outs because they said they were going to go into lighter and not screaming. Avenged Sevenfold is not a sell out band. Yes many people do look at it that way but really they aren't.

good charlotte changed their sound on their newest album and i hate that sound, but i will always love all of their other stuff, and who knows maybe i will love what they come out with next.

bands always wanna try something new.

grow up because seriously, not everything stays the same forever
people change and so does music.

listen to what you like and stop bringing other people and bands down for what they have become and morphed into.

i agree on the most part with this article, but the reason why i dont listen to A7X anymore is because they changed a little too much for me, and im not just talking about the singing. If you noticed, in their first album the guitar melodies were much more classical and harsher sounding in a way. but now most of their melodies are pure pop melodies. plus, M. Shadows stated in an interview that he was in it for the money and the chicks, and im sorry but i just cant respect that :/
but ya haha thats just my opinion :]]

I agree about this. I would never in any way accuse any band whether I like them or not of selling out. They do what they need to and who am I to say otherwise. My Chemical Romance hasn't saved my life. I've taken an oath against suicide. But songs like Helena, and Interlude pulled through for me when my Papa died and when we had to put my dog to sleep. All bands are going to morph their sound. That leaves no right for the fans to be calling them sell outs. Those people should probably grow up too.

No comment on th whole "Three Days Grace selling out."

But, just because a band gets success, and changes their sound a little as they progress is "selling out?" It really kind of annoys me when people say bands 'sell out' because they didn't stay small and local.

Good article, but stilll, Strongly against it

I believe the term "selling out" is rarely used in my volcabulary. I don't consider change selling out. Selling out, to me, is what you do when you put money before your beliefs.
I agree with you, people are blaming bands too much for not producing what they want. Why don't they go make their own music? Probably because they don't want to be called sell outs.
There is no band at the moment that I consider sell outs.

We cannot substitute maturity for selling out. People change, that’s just a natural part of life. All the bands named are no sell outs (the whole MCR, A7x, FOB, PATD thing really set me off). Sometimes, bands want to change, wouldn’t playing the same thing over and over again get kind of boring?

So all the legendary bands like ACDC and others like them are all sell outs because they’re old and have come back refreshed?

Sell out: Anyone who sacrifices artistic integrity in an effort to become more successful or popular (generally in music); someone who forgets their roots.

Like you said, interests change over time. That's probably one of the biggest reasons bands change over time. That and the fact that if bands kept the same sound, that would also probably turn tons of fans away.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Most of the so-called "selling out" that bands do now is them just getting paid to do their jobs. God forbid there are people out there besides you that know about your favorite band.
