Music is what you take it as. You can't say though that one thing will corrupt society without saying that all music can corrupt society. Think of The Beatles... Many people had problems with their songs, but we wouldn't have most of our music without them. If you are looking for hidden messages and lessons in how to kill people or why suicide is cool, then yeah, you'll find that. It doesn't mean it is there though.

you must've had a very sheltered upbringing if you believe that music is to be held accountable for all the world's misgivings.

What? Music isn't corrupting society, society is corrupting society. Music isn't inspiring people to do these things, society is. We need to fix the problems people are singing about, not fix the music they created. They have the same right you did to write this article, or I had to comment: free speech.
And if you want to write another article on a controversial subject, you have to show both sides, not just one. If it's an editorial, you can't be so convicting.

I believe that all types of music has the potential to corrupt. It's not the object, it's the person.

Well, on one hand, I do blithely credit Mindless Self Indulgence for the bulk of corruption that happened to me as a kid...but on the other hand, I don't really think it turned me into a bad person or anything. A person is going to turn out in a certain way no matter of the music that they listen to, no matter how easily influenced they are. But the way I see it, if they're so easily influenced that a music genre is going to go make them do horrible things...if the music didn't get to them, something would have. These things don't just start with a genre, unless there was already something a little "off" there to start with. God, this is just like people blaming video games for violence in teenagers. (And let's be honest, if video games really influenced teenagers that much, there would be a lot more of them taking mushrooms and then crawling through random pipes.)

Okay, I don't want to sound like everyone else but I still feel the need to comment. First of all this article provided zero pieces of evidence, was completely and totally biased and you must have just thought up one day that the cause of listening to the music could effect someone to kill or have sex and then decided to write an article about it. Yes, the music these days is honestly pathetic and I agree that there isn't a real need to listen to it (well other to dance :D) but that's why I don't listen to it. Music is used as a form of expressing emotion, past expirences, ect, even if the music doesn't seem like it was worth writing, your opinion holds little impact. There are no pieces of evidence priovided that prove you theory, yet you preach it like fact. I could hardly finish the article because how biased it was, it was the equivilent to me stating twilight causes teens to drink blood and go so crazy they kill themselves, or church music brain washes all listeners and forces them to believe in a (in my opinion) non-exsitent god. those are both statements and they hold no power until backed up with fact. Better luck next time. :D

No, no, no, no , NO!!

Music does not corrupt people. Any bag of stunted growth that doesn't know that entertainment is just that deserves to doom themselves to a dank cell somewhere for actually taking entertainment seriously.

I'm sorry, but this article shows absolutely no sign of research or even thought put into it. If in the slight chance that music does push someone to become violent, it is because the person was not stable anyway and needed help. They probably would have become violent anyway.

I love violent music. It helps me get my rage out so that I don't take it out on real people.

I don't think music is corrupt
If someone follows what is in a song that's all about them
for example I listen to A Litlle Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold all the time
but am I going to be a corrupt killer no
music made to exaggerate and play on our feelings of hat, love, madness etc.
Not all song are meant to be taken literally

I'm pretty sure the people who write this so-called corrupting music don't write it for other people, but for themselves. You can't listen to a song that somebody put their heart and soul and feelings into and say it's not suitable for people to listen to.
If a person doesn't feel comfortable with what they're listening to, it's their responsibility to decide.

If people don't like what they talk about, they shouldn't listen to it. That's why the cds in the stores have advisories on them, you have to be a certain age to buy them. And, people need to learn to not take everything to heart. People write music from the own experiences, not to get people to do certain things.

What about Christian [religious] rap, heavy metal, hiphop? They exist. Remember, they're just styles/genres of music.

Uhm, if you follow the music that is honestly bad for you, then your just a straight-up dumbass. Of course people are going tofollow it because it's "cool" or "in the now" thats why music is "corruption". It's solely based on the person that listens to it and how they figure out what it means. (Then people came up with Disney.)

I do listen to 'bad' music, but I sure as hell don't follow it. I can relate to it sometimes, but your basing it on just few things. Yeah, you should follow your own 'song' but let's face it; Hardly anyone is original nowadays. Sad to say it's the truth.

This is incredibly biased. However, I see where you are coming from. But seriously, who cares. Its called freedom of expression and I would rather die then censor people

I listen to music about death, sex, all sorts of crap that you call inappropriate, and I call fun. But you see, I cry when someone dies, because it's a horrible thing. I am abstinent and proud of that. I listen to music that talks about drugs and violence, but I would (probably) never intentionally hurt someone, and I don't at all feel influenced to do drugs. I am totally sober.
Perhaps you have merely met a plethora of weak-minded individuals who can't tell the difference between music and life, whether or not those often intermingle.
So get your facts straight, first, get some examples (because otherwise this article deserves no credit), and then work on rewriting this to make a convincing argument.

I would have to agree that there are a lot of generalizations in your article, though I won't go so far as to say you're completely off base. I think any standards that find their way into social acceptance have some influence over people; the degree to which it shapes their actions depends a lot on the emotional stability of the person.

Some people seek out music, writing, art and other media that validate opinions they already hold, and a few may act on them destructively. If this is the case, then the content of these songs isn't the cause of the problem. It may fan the flames, but it's unlikely to plant suggestions that weren't already there.

I do agree that a steady diet of negativity probably isn't the best thing for anyone. But most young people are intelligent enough to sort out artistic expression from hypnotic suggestion.

This is very generalizing. Some music may be about death and killing but that doesn't mean that it will turn our youth into mindless killing zombies. I listen to music about death and dying but I have yet to go on a homicidal killing spree. Maybe if you put some citation in your article on specific examples where music influenced a person negatively, I could give you a bit more credit.

Also, there is some really good, positive rap, rock and metal. Mockingbird by Eminem comes to mind. A song about how Eminem wants to give his daughter a great life, and to do that he must leave her but he misses her so much. What could be so bad about that rap music there?

People were corrupt long before rappers and rock stars started making music, so this whole article is pretty null and void. Just take a look back in history and you will see that violence, and discrimination against women dates back to the Roman Empire. People made money from it back then and they still do. If anything I feel like it makes people more aware of it. Just because I listen to a song about 50 cent and how many bitches he gets, doesn't mean that I'm going to go out and become like that. People are smarter than that these days and education systems (at least in Canada) work to make children more media aware, so we can listen to those sorts of songs and not want to kill ourselves or someone else. Despite all that, it looks like you took a lot of time and effort to write this. It was well-written.
