It's kind of sad to think that if some of these characters were just written well, they wouldn't annoy you. I mean, an example a few posts up was a too-nice character. If one of their flaws was that they were spineless and couldn't say no to people, then ta da. You have a character that, while in real life may annoy the living afdeak out of you, you'd probably appreciate them more in stories because you know that's a realistic trait and it happens with real people.

Same with Bella and Edward Cullen. If Edward's slight creepy-stalker-ness was embraced, people would be ALL over him because he would be rather unconventional and interesting. The problem with Edward was that the author did not want to embrace his flaws and tried to pass him off as perfection.

So a character with so much potential that isn't allowed off the scope of their three word summary annoys me. Someone that's limited to "bitchy and mean" or "sweet and funny".

Reading over comments (mostly in the first part of the thread), I'm genuinely surprised by how many people hate female characters just because they're female. People are allowed to have preferences, but to me it seems really... misogynistic to just hate female characters because they're female. -shrug- It makes me wonder how some people react to females in their own lives, then.

Personally, I dislike characters that are obvious stereotypes.

Male characters that are totally lovely and nice and when they're put in a sex scene, they're totally horrible and dominating in a totally mean way. I know it could happen but...it's never realistic.

^ I think most people hate the way females are portrayed on Mibba, and I'd have to agree with them there. A lot of the female characters here fall into one of two categories: helpless and whiny or bitchy and stuck-up.

^But I do find it kind of funny no one really ever mentions males in the same way. I've come across a lot of lame, annoying male characters on Mibba and I have noticed that they're victim to a lot of stereotypes too. But for some reason people just seem to hate females.

I have to admit, it's kind of annoying. It's like damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you create a passive, annoying female character, people complain, but if you create a strong female character apparently - according to one person who posted a few pages back - people can't seem to "relate to them", or some bullshit.

I hate characters that are either whiny, way too bitchy (as most people portray that preppy, cheerleader girl), or just way too hyperactive like a five year old child. Those are realistic to a certain point. Not every cheerleader is overly bitchy or stuckup, not every 'hyper/childish' person are like tripped up on acid or brainless like Patrick Star (but in some people I know that might be like that... still usually are pretty annoying), and I just plain hate it when people are whiny over the most ridiculous things.

I like characters who are balanced - and if they're leaning on the side with those traits, then at least they're more... well thought out, realistic, and mature, instead of adding '!!!' at the end of every dialogue. For me, this goes for any characters, regardless of gender.

Cliche characters or too predictible characters. If you can guess everything that they say/do it's annoying.
The ever-so classic, ever-so annoying "damsel in distress" character.
Other bits may just irk me but those two annoy me to no end

I don't like to read women because I like to read slash with not a lot of characters. I prefer the focus to be on the leads and then just minor stuff from the other characters or just their close friends. That's my preference for reading.

And I haven't seen a lot of characters work well in what I like to read.

I mean, I've read a few fics with girls in them and I didn't hate the characters. Ashlee Simpson was in a Patrick Stump fic I read way back when and then Vicky-T and Ashlee were both in this one fic I started to read.

    That's why I don't like female characters.

It's difficult for them to be properly executed in my reading preference plots.

I hate it when they use the whole 'emo' coture kinda thing.
It's like, 'Oh hey, I'm hopelessly emo and wear guyliner'
Then you get the girl with a great life whining about how her problems are so bad.
The best kinda female character are the ones who are not damsels in distress or bolshy and butch.
    Y'know...the realistic ones...?

Am I the only one who gets pissed off at those really sstupid ones where the author thinks its hilarious to include their friends and make everything irrelevant?

No That is just what irritates me to no end. Any stereotypical character frustrates me though because they are just so predictable. With the Emo characters, it isn't surprising to discover the author writing about him/her cutting and whining over something. Disgust

I really just hate any stereotypical, badly-wrritten character.

Characters that are too nice, or characters that have no personality at all, as if the writer doesn't even care about them. If you make a character, please put at least some effort into him/her.

Characters that are portrayed as scene/emo.
And they always wear the same type of clothes, wear their make up the same way, but then they have this huge date with their boyfriend/girlfriend and, all of the sudden they are wearing high couture.
And they always have one parent or both hating them because they are scene/emo, but love other sibling, who turns out to be just the same scene/emo as the leading character.

I, like most other people, hate the typical emo/scene character. It's fucking annoying. I also don't like the stereotypical "preppy bitch" character. Uh, hello, I practically live in American Eagle and adore Hollister, but I'm not a slutty, irrational, malicious-for-no-reason bitch, thanks.

I hate "flat" characters, too. No real dimension. No reasoning. No substance. Nothing. Just dull, irritating, seen-it-all-before cardboard cut-outs.

I get really annoyed at female characters in stories lately. I don't know what it is but every female character I've read about lately, I've already saw in another story. They're either whiny, bitchy, complete assholes or perfect yet they don't know.
I'll admit that I've read quite a lot of stories and I've finally gotten tired of the female characters being almost all the same... which is sort of why I've started reading slash. Shifty
I also find the stereotype characters as annoying in stories, yet I've been guilty of it but I'm trying to break that habit.

I don't really see why so many people hate female characters for that sole reason. It makes me wonder what they think of females in real life. I hate the stereotypes of women, and some people find them to be the only ways to portray women.

Having said that, I hate all stereotypes. Characters with no personality whatsoever. Those kinds of characters can't serve any real purpose in a story.

And just putting this out there for those writing fiction where the band members are in high school, IPODS DIDN'T FUCKING EXIST!

    /ends rant.
    lmfao Totally agreed.
Female charcters in general, most of the time. There are some out there that I like. I can't even describe why I don't like them though.
As long as they can stand up for themselves and don't wait for a boy to save their life.
