Do You Have a Preferred Rating to Write? Why?

  • I'm a very PG-13 kind of girl. That's what I usually read, at least.
The story I'm working on now was originally PG-13, but I've recently changed it to R. I realized that the story was going to be a lot more violent than I had expected it to be.

So my preferances are the moderate ratings...not too safe, not too "AAH OH MY GOD WHAT ARE THEY DOING?"

  • I tend to write either PG-13 or NC-17. It's not that I write to a certain rating, that's just how they turn out.

All my poetic stuff tends to be PG-13 because, although it's emotive, it's not necessarily higher than that. I don't write sex because I'm a prude and it makes me cringe, so my nice stuff doesn't tend to reach that high.

My horror stories is NC-17 because I'm a total creepr and absolutely love writing gore. Shifty

  • I go to a buttheaded school, and when I write there I have to be careful of what I write because my teachers will just come up alongside and read. And if I'm writing a sex scene, I'll get into major trouble.
    Grr
So, I tend to keep things at a PG-13 level.

First, kudos for having the guts to write in school. Thumb up

I also stay away from a lot of NC-17 content because I'm afraid of getting caught with it...I always think, "What if my friends find this? What if my MOM reads this?" and then, instead of having an axe-murder/rapist in my story, I have a slightly overweight, middle-aged guy who may or may not be a stalker.

I'm doomed to the life of PG-13 almost-gory and almost-sex scenes.

Which is good. It's hard to find good gore here. Hail
Most is pretty lame, PG-13 stuff--like the writer wanted the scene to be gory and violent, but then got scared and backed out. So all it turns out doing is hinting that the scene was violent...*guilty*

  • I don't think I've ever gone above PG-13 - I've never had any interest in doing so. I read much higher ratings, but have never written it.

I'm sure I'd have few problems writing sex/gore scenes, but I'd probably be uncomfortable doing so, and as I've never found either of the two necessary in my writing it's not an issue.

  • I prefer to write NC-17 because I feel like it gives me the most freedom.

I also like to write the more explicit sex scenes because I feel like I can show more of how the characters relate to each other through sex.

I'm currently working on a story that's rated R, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up bumping it up to NC-17.

  • Either PG-13 or R.
    March 24th, 2010 at 03:01am
  • NC-17.

Even though I think most of my posted stories are PG-13.

I prefer to write explicit sex scenes, therefore I prefer NC-17 fic.

  • I write a lot of PG-13 stuff
but I'm kinda starting to get into the darker NC-17 stuff.
With the gore and sex and all that.
    I'm a murder story nutcase

  • I prefer NC-17 because I'd rather read a story that I don't constantly feel is watered down. Adult's lives tend to have something that makes a story NC-17 involved in them.

But you can portray that, those "adult situations", and still have a story that isn't NC-17 or even R. The ratings are just about how much detail you go into as far as sex (drug use, violence...) goes.

That's very true, but i mean even the references alone surely would make it an NC-17? I dunno... I obviously can't say for sure, but I don't think I know any adults who don't think about sex or swear sometimes, or talk to someone most days who does swear a lot.

No, the mentions alone do not make it NC-17. (Content Rating Guidelines thread.)

NC-17 denotes explicit sexual scenes and extremely explicit violence.

Mentions of sex and swearing do not make a story NC-17. Even sex scenes in themselves do not automatically mean an NC-17 rating.

I just wrote a story with a sex scene in it that's only rated R.

  • Though I read everything, I think I like PG-13 the most, reading and writing. I think it's a good balance between adult topics and not too much detail. I like to leave some to the reader's imagination.
    March 25th, 2010 at 05:15am
  • My writing generally falls somewhere between PG-13 and R, so I just whack it at R to be safe.
I've only ever deliberately written NC-17 once, even though two of my fics are rated that. They're both mainly rated that for sex and language.
    March 25th, 2010 at 08:53am
  • NC-17 mostly, and R. With or without writting sex, the stuff I write usually end up being pretty dark or with other adult themes.
    June 13th, 2010 at 09:10am
  • Mostly R, occassional PG-13. Not really NC-17 because I don't write graphic sex scenes or anything like that, they're just heavily implied or written explicitly. Mostly my writing just has casual mention of drugs, swearing, sex etc.
    June 13th, 2010 at 10:55am
  • Lately I've been writing more R and PG-13 just because sex scenes haven't need to be placed in any of my stories. I love writing NC-17 and R stories, but when looking at the ratio of the ratings I write to another, I'm always shocked to see that I write more PG-13 than anything else.
    June 13th, 2010 at 06:00pm
  • It really depends on what I'm writing.
Like, my OF is pretty dark and depressing (not to mention violent XD), and I'm actually about to write a rape/sex scene, so it's R. My really serious fanfic is PG-13 because it has more violence and a tad bit of swearing, but nothing worse.
I guess most of my stories end up being around PG because I write mostly Harry Potter fanfiction, and I like to keep the feel of Rowling's stories. Plus, I usually write humor, and that doesn't really involve sex, drugs and swearing in HP. And if it is swearing, it's usually "Merlin's Pants!" or "Holy Fizzing Whizbees!" that sort of thing.
    June 14th, 2010 at 03:34am
  • I usually go for the NC-17 rating, mostly because that means I can give myself complete ability to write whatever I want, be that everything from sex to a day at the fair.
