Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. And like what do you mean "sports program"? And a scholarship to do what? I just need a bit more information to be able to answer. XD

A scholarship to go to uni? And a sports program is like... he's playing sports and because he's so good, he can go to uni, play sports for that uni team and gets scholarship to study there as well. You get what I mean? XD

A quick look says that yes there are sports scholarships but not quite how you're thinking. It depends on the university but from the ones I've looked at, the prospective student must play for either their region or national team and have good academic grade. As Joey's a football player, it would make it sense that he would have tried out for his region's football team as a kid, and as I assume he was good, played for the under 13s, then the under 16s, and now finally the under 18s (or even been recruited into one of the Premiership's Club's Academies). I would also assume he would be in the school's football team as well. But as far as I'm aware, you have to get the grades to go to uni and if you're a sports player and are good, you can apply for a scholarship that either knocks some money off (like £1000 a year) or gives you all these benefits of training and practice, the types of things that could help develop their skills and lead them into a professional career.

Ah yes... he's in the football team, one of the star players. And I guess that's why he's so arrogant and stuff. XD So this Premiership's Club Academies is like under the big football club like Liverpool, Chelsea and others, right? So maybe he also can be under one of those clubs?

I did a bit more research into the matter and having him in one of the team's youth groups (like Wayne Rooney was in Everton's youth group) might be better. Or he could just be playing for the under 18s regional and school football teams and depending on where we're ending with this and the future of the band, he could be noticed by one of the big football clubs scouts for the under 21s?

I've been trying to research school systems and the courses they could take. But I thought I'd be easier just to ask you since you're familiar with your own school system, can you please give me a list of courses? Shifty

Jordy is writing her chapter. She'd just gotten into uni and she also has a part-time job so she's busy. But the last time we talked, I think she's almost done with her chapter.

I hope she'll be able to get it up soon. Cute

Guys I finally finished! I'm so happy with the word count as well because it's my longest written chapter I believe, anyway I have stuff in barracks that I'd like opinions on it, also if you want to change you character description/add to it/change their dialogue because I kind of don't really know them.
Five thousand, three hundred and twenty students attended [Ashton Vale], ranging from five year old new entrants up until year thirteen secondary school. The school sight was divided up, you can find the primary classes at the front of the campus, once you finish primary you move up into the [middle school] classes where you spend the next three years until you move again into [intermediate classes] from there you finish the last four to five years in [secondary school] or high school as others call it.

Ali knew about random facts like these, she had stored it in her mind when she had transferred to [England] from America. With that being said, it was also all completely pointless information because quite frankly, she didn’t care.

Three years, sixty two days, four hours and thirty seven minutes and counting, that’s how long she’s been living in England for, she had transferred in when she had started high school. After divorcing her father Ali’s mom had wanted a change of scene, having managed to get a job here her family had settled in. Her mom had never finished high school so it was hard to get a good job and moving had taken most of her saving.

Ali worked part time to help her mom out; her goal was to graduate high school with the highest marks she could get in order to sit a scholarship to get into the prestigious [University Name Here], that way Ali could get a good job to help her mom support herself and her younger sister.

Today however, Ali was walking through the halls of school, bee lining for a certain office with a piece of paper in her left hand. Once there Ali paused at the door, she lifted her free hand up to her chin length dark hair and ran her fingers through it in a quick nervous manner. Ruffling it up and only stopping when she had stepped inside the disarrayed office.

“Alice, you made it, great!” A voice stated, distracting the younger girl from inspecting the messy office space.

“Ali,” The younger girl spoke up, her vivid blue eyes staring at the teacher in front of her, “I’d prefer to be called Ali,” she explained.

“Oh right, of course,” the teacher laughed, shuffling her paperwork around as if looking for something.

“With all due respect Mrs Morrison, why am I here? You’re a music teacher, I’ve never taken music as a subject before,” Ali stated, confusion written on her face. Ali was an academically inclined student, taking English Literature, Statistics, Biology and Physics.

“I understand Ali but I’m hoping you can help me, the other day I was walking past one of the study rooms and I heard someone singing,” Mrs Morrison explained, “it took me by surprise when I peered in to see you. Has anyone every told you that you have a lovely voice?”

Ali blinked, she hadn’t been expecting that kind of question, “I’ve only ever sung for my mom and sister,” Ali replied warily, wondering where this was going, “but yeah, they tell me I have a nice voice.”

“I know this is a long shot but some of my students in my class are struggling to find a singer for their group,” Mrs Morrison gave an uneasy smile as Ali deciphered the teacher’s words.

“You… want me to join their group?” Ali asked, her eyebrows crinkled together, ready to shoot down the idea.’’

“I would appreciate it if you went to one of their meeting at lunchtime today and heard them out,”

“I’m not really interested Mrs Morrison,” Ali stated curtly.

“The group are going to enter into [Battle of the Bands], it’s a competition coming up in a few months, if you win, which I believe the group could do, there’s a prize,”

“What kind of prize?” Ali asked, she admitted it pricked her interest now.

“[$10,000] for the winning band and a scholarship into [University Name Here],” Mrs Morrison smiled now, pleased to have gotten Ali’s full attention.

“Scholarship? [University Name Here]?” Ali’s heart picked up pace at the thought, “Okay, okay, I’ll go to this meeting,” without another word Ali turned on her heel, throwing a quick wave over her shoulder and leaving the office.

    [break here]

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ali breathed out as she had stepped into music room three. Her eyes landed on three figures. Joey, Izzy and Reed. They were all in Ali’s year so she at least knew of them.

“Babycakes? What are you doing here?” Reed spoke, breaking the silence; he was in Ali’s [homeroom], a [tall, lanky guy with brown hair and brown eyes]. Reed was a jokster and never took anything seriously which pissed Ali off a bit because even though he never took his subjects seriously he still managed to get pretty good marks in all of them. He also had a habit of nicknaming people, for instance Ali was nicknamed “Babycakes” for some reason and she had long given up on telling him to stop calling her that.

“You needed a singer didn’t you?” Ali replied, flicking her eyes between her peers.

“But aren’t you like a nerd or something?” Joey asked, giving her a doubtful stare.

“If by nerd, you mean I study and take my classes seriously then yes, I’m ‘like a nerd or something’” Ali replied, rolling her eyes at him.

Joey grunted in reply, when Ali stepped closer to the group she saw a football at his feet and he was subconsciously rolling the round ball around. Joey was on the football team, Ali had never been to a game before but she heard from other classmates that he was pretty good.

Ali took a seat next to the only other girl in the group, Izzy. They made eye contact for a moment before they both looked away from one another in disinterest. Izzy spelled trouble and it didn’t take a genius to figure that out, she was hard to trust because she was usually the one to start rumours and arguments between others.

This group came from completely different backgrounds; this would either work well or end up in a complete and utter disaster.

Hey, so I love the chapter but I have things to bring up regarding schooling!

First off, as it's a school going from key stage 1 up until 5, I'm assuming it's going to be a private school and cost like a bomb?? I mean, I don't know whether there are schools like that in England that are state-funded but they certainly aren't the norm. Secondly, 5,320 students?? There was around 1,200 student in my secondary school, from the ages of 11-18. I don't think we have schools that big, state-funded or private, as the private schools in my area that take from 5 years old up to 18 year olds have a small number of students (one has like 150 students) because of costing the earth to attend. I might live in Wales currently but I did live in England for a lot of my life and they don't differ too much. Also, we generally (see: rarely) don't have "middle" school. We have primary (from 5-11 years) and secondary (11-16) with sixth form being 16-18.

We also don't graduate until university, so we're just school leavers (and we have an obsession with collecting jumpers that state that fact). Soooo, with this line - "Ali worked part time to help her mom out; her goal was to graduate high school with the highest marks she could get in order to sit a scholarship to get into the prestigious [University Name Here]" - Ali would be intending to achieve three (/four?) As or A* at A-Level, and that she would have applied in October to Cambridge or Oxford (as they're the "big" universities here). And, as far as I'm aware (seriously, I would have applied for one) but I don't think we have things such as scholarships like you're thinking of. I mean, we have to apply for bursaries or scholarships to the university that we want to go to, and I know some do change a conditional offer (where it depends on our results) to an unconditional offer (where we have a place, no matter our grades) depending on a scholarship as my friend got one, but if I'm thinking of the same meaning, we have to pay for our university and won't get a "free-ride" scholarship.

(Also am just curious to what you had her wanting to do in uni? Maths (Statistics), Biology and Physics are quite specific subjects geared towards Medicine, and English Lit just seems out of place.)

As for the competition, I think we need to re-think that. I'm looking at Live and Unsigned and their general prizes were money towards music, recording sessions, equipment and places in festivals/tours. They definitely wouldn't give out scholarships like that, especially as you have to apply directly to the university for scholarship/bursaries and apply to university via UCAS. And all minor band things that happened around my area were just small money prizes and what-not.

"he was in Ali’s [homeroom]" - "form" or "form class" would fit here. Basically just where they'd register.

Sorry, I didn't mean to write so much. XD But everything else looks fine, even if Ashton Vale does look a little strange to be a school name. Think

Ah this is really helpful thanks!

Should I scratch the whole competition thing then? If that's the case that's fine but I have no idea why Ali would say yes to joining a band Think

I'm happy to call it Ashton High or anything, I just thought of that off the top of my head and used it but if that's the case we can change it to a more appropriate name.

As for the subjects I have no idea, I just picked subjects that friends of mine used to take at my school haha, I'll change it so it's more on point to something.

Erm, what else, I'll change it to school leaver then (so confusing haha) and I'll take out scholarship and just make it she's in it for the money?

I'm all over the place x.x I'll only make it a secondary school then as well, I put that originally so I don't know why I ended up doing a 360 like that Facepalm

We could make up this fake competition in the town/city that they live which is a talent one, not necessarily a music one, that they wanted to enter. First place could be £500 between them, second place £250 and third place £100. If they won that'd still be £125 that she'd walk away with, and when it comes to saving up for uni, you'd take any money you could get.

My secondary was just [name] School, so it could be Aston School. With the subjects, we have to pick them based on the course and university that we want to attend. I can help if you want depending on her aspirations for uni.

Also you could put "finish sixth form with the highest grades [...]" instead of school leaver.

One thousand, one hundred and twenty students attended Ashton School, ranging from eleven year olds up until eighteen year olds. The school site was divided up; you could find the first year classes at the front of the campus and the further into the school grounds you went the higher the year classes went. Senior students were located toward the further back of the campus.

“The group are going to enter into Play it Live, it’s a competition coming up in a few months, if you win, which I believe the group could do, there’s a prize,”

“What kind of prize?” Ali asked, she admitted it pricked her interest now.

“500 pounds for the winning band,” Mrs Morrison smiled now, pleased to have gotten Ali’s full attention.

“500 pounds, that’s roughly 125 pounds each?” Ali’s heart picked up pace at the thought, “Okay, okay, I’ll go to this meeting,” without another word Ali turned on her heel, throwing a quick wave over her shoulder and leaving the office. If they won she could save her share of the winnings to help go toward her University fees, which was good enough for Ali.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ali breathed out as she had stepped into music room three. Her eyes landed on three figures. Joey, Izzy and Reed. They were all in Ali’s year so she at least knew of them.

“Babycakes? What are you doing here?” Reed spoke, breaking the silence; he was in Ali’s form, a tall, lanky guy with brown hair and brown eyes. Reed was a jokester and never took anything seriously which pissed Ali off a bit because even though he never took his subjects seriously he still managed to get pretty good marks in all of them.

I'm getting started on my chapter now and I'm going to partly continue from where the first chapter ends and partly progress further, but I wanted to bring up that we still haven't discussed the overall plot? Like, okay, yeah, it's them in the band, overcoming their problems and insecurities and having the band help each of them out somehow, but that's really, really vague. I dunno about you guys, but I'd really like a basic outline of where our chapters are going each round so that none of us struggle with an idea when it comes to our turn.

I just really like having outlines when it comes to group writes so that we don't get lost. Unsure
