I’m Losing My Only Dream.

Sophia had just picked Emery up from her daycare. She had spent the day wedding dress shopping and found one. Picking Emery up and putting her in her car seat, she got in the car and drove to the park, “I think we need a little play time.” Sophia still couldn’t believe how fast Emery was growing and it didn’t feel like it had been four years since she was born and it certainly didn’t feel like it had been that long since she had spoken with Jorel.

Jorel had just found out about Sophia being engaged and on top of that she had a child. “A daughter who is four and just the cutest thing ever.” Is what Sophia’s cousin Marisa told him. The only thing Jorel could think of was that he and Sophia had broken up four years ago and he wondered if her daughter was his. He had to find out so he made the decision to contact her for the first time in four years. He just hoped she would pick up whenever he put the phone to his ear.

Sophia was surprised to see Jorel’s name come up on her phone as she answered, “Hello?” She said as she went with Emery over to the swings and pushed her carefully. She wondered what he could want after years, and she was almost certain that he didn’t know about Emery.

“Hey...so...I heard you’re engaged.” Jorel started off. He could hear the faint creaking of the swings so he figured she was at the park. “And that you have a daughter. Marisa told me.” He said. He still kept in contact with Sophia’s cousin but that was it.

Sophia suddenly wanted to curse her cousin, of course it was Marisa, “Yeah, I’ve been engaged for about six months...and my daughter, Emery, is four...” She bit her lip, knowing if he even took a few minutes to think about it, he would realize Emery was his.

Jorel sighed. “Be honest with me Soph, is she mine?” He asked. It didn’t take a genius to realize she was, he just wanted to hear it from Sophia.

Sophia sighed softly, “She is. I found out I was pregnant after we broke up, and you weren’t sure what you wanted....I didn’t think you’d want to be tied down...” she felt horrible, but she was just doing what was best for her daughter, especially since Jorel wasn’t sure he wanted a commitment at the time.

Jorel sighed and put the phone down for a moment, running his hands through his short hair. “Can I see her? Uh meet her...” He asked as he picked the phone back up. “I’m not mad, I understand why you did it...I just want to meet her..” He said. He had changed in the last four years, he was even ready to settle down if he found the right one, and he wanted to be in his daughters life.

“Of course Jay, I would love for you to meet her...” Sophia said softly. She suddenly felt guilty about not telling Jorel about Emery. She sighed softly, “When do you want to meet her?” Sophia asked.

“I’m free today...uh right now, if that’ll work.” Jorel said as he slipped his shoes back on. “If not, I can come by any time today.” He added.

“Yeah that would be fine, we’re leaving the park right now, I’ll text you my address, Okay?” Sophia said as she got Emery off the swing and started walking back to the car. After she hung up with Jorel, she sent him her address, got in the car and drove home.

“Alright I’ll be over soon.” Jorel told her before hanging up. He noticed she didn’t live far, which was great. He sighed before going to shower and getting ready. On my way. he sent a text to Sophia before going out to his car and logging her address into his GPS.

Alright Sophia walked into the house with Emery, once they were inside she had her sit on the couch, “Emery, we need to talk about something, okay?”

“What is it mama?” Emery said as she looked up at Sophia.

Sophia sighed, “Remember how I told you that your daddy was gone on a really long trip?” Seeing her nod, she continued, “Daddy is coming to visit you today...”

She smiled as Emery jumped up, “Really?” She said with a huge smile on her.

Jorel arrived at her house and sighed as he cut his engine. He took a few deep breaths before looking at himself in his mirror and then getting out.

He walked up to the door and knocked on it before stepping back and waiting for Sophia to open the door.

“He’s here now,” Sophia told Emery as she got up and walked to the door.

Opening the door, she looked at Jorel, “Hey, she’s in here,” before she even had a chance to let him in, Emery was at the door.

“Daddy?” She questioned, looking at Sophia.

Seeing Sophia nod, Emery smiled, “Daddy!” She squealed as she ran over and hugged his leg.

Jorel smiled whenever he heard her call him daddy. He bent down and picked her up, “hey kiddo.” He said, hugging her.

She was his, he could see it. He put her down and looked at Sophia. “We need to talk.” He said whenever Emery started playing with her toys.

Watching as Emery went to play with her toys, she looked at Jorel, “What is it?” She asked. Sophia was happy when she saw the smile on Jorel’s face when it came to Emery.

She could only imagine what they needed to talk about, there were so many things.

“First of all, why didn’t you tell me? I know I was an asshole back then but if you would have told me, it would have changed everything..” Jorel said. “Also...you’re engaged? To who? And how does Emery feel about it?” He asked.

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to make you choose between family and your career,” Sophia told him. “Yes I’m engaged, his name is Trevor. Emery likes him, we’ve been dating for three years...” she felt guilty, but she was sticking to her choice, it was best for Emery.
