Which kind of story would you prefer to read, one with a happy ending or one that ends on a sour note?

When you answer please tell us your reasons why.

I'm a hypocrite because I always want them to end happy.
But I don't mind an unhappy ending.
    Bittersweet is also very good.

For me, it depends on the content of the story. I don't mind happy endings if they're realistic. I hate happy endings where everything is just magically better and it's like the main conflict never happend at all.
I like bittersweet endings the best. I don't know why, I just do.

Happy endings, only if they're realistic.

    I don't mind a bad ending. :cute:

I personally like sad endings. Happy endings are okay but I love a good tragedy.

Bad endings make me sad. I don't mind bittersweet endings though. I like happy endings. But my favorite is a story where really shitty things happen to the person but they get a (somewhat) happy ending. I'm a sap, so sue me.

I would read the one with a better writing style.
I don't really care if a story is sad or happy as long as when I finish it I am truly moved by it.

I prefer ones that kind of linger in the air. That make you wonder about what happened, what will happen, etc.
But happy endings are okay if they're realistic, same with sad endings. x]

Yeah I like that to, like open-ended(that the right words? :shifty) endings were you kind of have to make up your own mind about what happens after the story is over.

I like bittersweet endings. I have a weird relationship with "unsatisfing" endings or open ending ones, where they kinda have the character walking off into the sunset. I hate them but at the same time I love them.

I love very, very unhappy endings. To see the character you loved dead or in this huge mess. It's so satisfactory for me. Like. Pure beautifulness.

For me, a happy ending can be satisfying, just as long as it's realistic and it fits. Not something that's just like a miracle happy ending, not any magical 'happily ever after'. Though, I tend to enjoy bittersweet endings, just because it seems more appropriate. Unhappy endings can be good, though, only good in some cases; like maybe a cliffhanger ending, those are always cool.

It depends on the tone of the story for me.
I mean, overall, I really like both,
but I hate reading stories that are really happy all the way though and then sad at the end, and vice versa.

I prefer sadder endings, because I feel more emotion with them. If I can still feel sad after hours of finishing the story, obviously it leaves an impression.

Happy endings haven't ever really done that to me. It's either I feel like the story shouldn't have ended yet, it ends cliche, or the story ends right back where it began.

I think if I ever where to read a happy ending I enjoyed, there would have to be a twist or something.

I've read this fanfic, back in Quizilla days, a year or two ago, and I was literally bawling my eyes out at the end. It was a pretty cliche storyline, but it was written so strongly and it was amazing.
Needless to say, the ending was sad, but it...I still cry when I think about it sometimes.
I've failed to find a story that can do that to me again. Sad

To me, I think it all really depends on the whole storyline before the ending. Some storylines just fit with an unhappy ending- some are better off with happy endings. It all depends to me.
    But I love both =]
But somehow, the tragic ones always gets me thinking o.O Like, a lot.

I think... I'm somewhere in between. :XD

Kind of like... things are getting better, but their not completely better yet. Happy endings get old way too quick. Same as sad ones, somewhere in between is what I prefer. Like Dru's "Chipped Black Nail Polish." The ending gives you a sense that everything will be better, but it's not a detailed "Mikey stopped being abusive and their happy now!" kind of ending. If that makes any sense.
