For me, it all depends on the storyline, like most of you have said.
If the author could pull off a very tragic ending, but still manage to give the reader closure and feel satisfied with it, then I'm perfectly fine.
Usually, I'm not one for happy endings. It could be just a step away from perfect, but I'd like to think that the characters still have flaws like ordinary human beings; because in reality, not everyone gets their happy ending, after all.
But I don't know, it all really depends on the story itself and what has led up to the final chapter.

I kind of like books whose endings consist of something good coming out of something bad.
You know, like, "Such horrible things have been happening lately, but see what we have to look forward to!"

I just like that unexpected little piece of happiness.
    It makes me... happy.

I'm a sucker for tragedy. I always end up gravitating towards stories that end in death or something like that. Actually, all of my oneshots have death in them. Kind of odd, actually. But nonetheless, I love a good sad ending where they don't live happily ever after.

Rarely, mind you very rarely, I do like a happy ending or a moderately good ending if it's written well enough.

    Happy or sad...

Just as long as it's a satisfying ending. Not one that has you staring at the screen in horror. That has happened to me once and I'll be happy if I never have to go through that again.

I like two kind of story ends.

The ones that are brutal, definitive, nothing left to wonder, just blast there you go! Usually sad, or mad, or angry

Or the ones that don't really seem like an end, like ti can go on and on.

    Usually they are bittersweet

It doesn't really matter to me all that much whether the ending is sad or happy. As long as the ending is logical and makes sense; as long as it seems a very real ending.

Though, I have to say, I kind of prefer the sad and tragic endings. I haven't read too many, actually, but they've left more of an impression on me. Not many happy endings happen in real life, so I'd rather read about what would really happen...if that makes sense.

My opinion, is if the characters went through a ton of trouble through out the story, a happy, but realistic ending is awesome.
A tragic ending is always really great, as long as the author can write it correctly. And I think if it is a sad ending, a sequel is the best way to go. And then, the ending of the second is really questionable for the readers, because they know you're not afraid of sad endings.

It all depends on the content of the story too of course. Because if the story is mostly happy, and then one of the main characters just randomly dies at the end or something, it's a little ridiculous.

    That's what I think anyway. =)

I like a happy ending, sure. But I kind of prefer tragedy's. I like the how there's no "happily ever after" ending :file:

I like horribly depressing endings. Don't ask me why, I just do. They speak to me. I feel like they say something about how fairytale endings never happen in real life, that there are always regrets.

Hmmm, I'll have to agree with some of you. I like stories where the ending makes sense.

Like I've read stories where the ending is complete bologna. "Even though Silvia was shot in the head and remembered nothing, things were good in her life." It makes me sit there with a dumbstruck expression. Wondering how that even was possible. :/

My favorite endings are unique ones though. Sometimes they aren't really happy or sad, they just leave you with a satisfactory feeling. Like the ending fits or something along those lines. And now I'm babbling, sorry about that.

I like stories that have a lot of tragedy in them but in the end things turn out somewhat well, but not happily-ever-after. Like as in, in the end the evil thing was killed, but it still murdered so many friends and family and other innocent people, so everyone is glad that the evil thing is dead but the pain of losing so many friends still lingers with them. You know what I mean?

I also like stories where the endings are just plain sad and tragic.

I perfer stories with sad endings, I've always been like that and I'm not exactly sure why.
I like sad stories because they tend to be more real and I can't stand a once upon a time.. story.

I'm a hypocrite. I write a lot of sad and bittersweet endings, but I much prefer to read happy ones.

I like the ones where you think it's all gonna end happily ever after, but it takes a trn and it's actually a really sad ending. As long as it surprises me, and is well written.

I say I love happy endings, but I do love something that makes me ball my eyes out.
To be honest, I'll never be happy, if something bad happens I get upset and if it's all mushy I'm like "Kill 'em all!" and go a little but crazy!
