There are TONNES of good things out there to cook that take little time, little effort and just a bit of understanding of your ingredients.
But wouldn't eating and cooking new dishes that aren't traditional for the region in which I live rob me of my cultural identity?
Not necessarily, if you have things in moderation you shouldn't feel that at all. A lot of Mauritian food takes ages to prepare and cook because it's all basically made from scratch, so we have more Western dishes sometimes. However, we keep our rice in our daily meals because that's just part of our culture.

Also, you wouldn't want to eat much Mauritian food, well the good stuff anyway. It's all drenched in oil. :XD

Then why would fast-food affect me from a cultural point of view?

Romanian cuisine is based largely on fatty meats. >_>

I don't think it can. Fast food is affected by culture, if your culture suddenly changes eventually the fast-food would change in occurrence with that. I'm guessing for consumer consumption purposes etc.

Kafka you misunderstood my point from the beginning.

It is fine to eat various different foods from around the world. You don't hurt your ability to cook culturally rich foods by venturing away from your own culture in that respect.

HOWEVER forces like Mcdonalds and general foods set out to get everyone to eat their disgusting food all of which is mass produced.

mcdonalds pushes smaller local owned businesses out of business.

People choose to eat mcdonalds rather than something that is not promoting international homogenization.

Food culture should be a tapestry of wonderful different local foods for everyone to enjoy. Mcdonalds on the other hand thinks all food should be mcdonalds. This is directly in their corporate mission statement.

But eating "international" food promotes globalizations, and the fact that I drink Starbucks coffee and eat at McDonalds every other day even though I live in Romania not the US is a direct effect of globalization.

There is a huge difference between globalization and homogenization.

It is possible to have a wonderfully rich global tapestry of cultures.

The american's manifest destiny however denotes a goal of enslaving all other cultures and melting them into their own.

    Oh, the fast food industry.
After working at Wendy's, I will never eat fast food again. Trust me, I have plenty of nasty fast food stories. One that stands out though is when there were all these flies hovering over my register, the manager told me to stand away from the front counter and sprayed insecticides everywhere. Not only that, but you could see the particles of it under the light falling into the chicken nugget/fries heating trays! So basically they served people insecticides for the rest of the day. Yummy!

I don't understand why fast food places insist on being slack when it comes to hygiene. It's almost as if that's part of their policy. One of my friend's who worked at McDonalds said that employees would have sex in the food storage area, not wear gloves when handling food (as in, preparing the food), not wear hair nets when they were supposed to etc. Why do they think they can be so slack? I guess that's the case for any place food is prepared, including sit in cafes and restaurants. But with fast food places it seems like it's much more prominent.

I used to absolutely love McDonalds when I was a kid-but who didn't? The fries just tasted so good but now it sort of disgusts me. They put too much salt on the fries and the salads have more sugar than a coke. I also saw Super Size Me, so I eat McDoanlds less now. However, I think Subway is good. It classifies as fast food, it's really tasty and is not too unhealthy (unless you get the meatballs which is practically saturated in salt). Subway is getting really famous in England as well, so that's good because I don't feel too guitly eating it!

fast food jobs pay minimum wage and people who have those jobs largely don't care about them. you're hurting the corporation not some boss who comes to be like a father to you or whatever.

i have seen some really dirty restaurants though... thats true for sure, some people just don't care.

^ Yeah, she's been one for about 40 years, I think?
Most like to say that McDonald's is disgusting and all that shit,
but she believes it's what you order.
    And that counts for anywhere.

Maybe not anywhere...cause someone may have roaches in their food, but that's another thing. -_-

I would have to disagree with her, also being a food expert. (chef, eco- gastronome, somellier). I don't have her experience, but i think as an owner, shes biased.

^ Well I mean, she said that to us years before she owned a McDonald's, which wasn't her idea. It was her husband's (my grandfather.)

She always said that to us.

No, but seriously, yes, I know. I was just saying.
People whoe don't eat fast food doesn't mean they're eating healthier than everyone else....not that you were saying that.
