Forever Enemies

Remembering the Past

Flashback

“Miss Delilah what are you cooking up today?” The captain asked as I milled about the small kitchen on the ship.
“I was thinking some sort of stew, vegetable, that is if we even have the things we need, I swear your crewmembers sneak in here at night and eat my food” I laughed searching through a cabinet looking for something green and healthy.
“Stew sounds lovely and don’t bother looking too hard we are to make port in a few hours I will see to it that you have fresh ingredients for your stew” The captain bowed his head and left the kitchen. I finally stopped my rummaging and sat down on the one lonely stool that was in the kitchen. I was thankful that the captain cared about me so much, he was similar to my father but didn’t care so much about my past and misfortunes. I sat there for a few moments remembering my father, he was a brave and strong man, someone that I always looked up to and I aimed to please. I thought he would always be there when I needed him but when I needed him the most he abandoned me along with my mother. But I had a new family now, true they were a bunch of rude stinky and ruthless pirates that lived in a ship most of the time but they were my family and I loved them.

Hours later the captain came into the bunk room and informed me that we had made port and that he sent two of the men to the market to procure fresh food. While we were docked I went up to the main deck and looked out at the water. It was my ritual to stand with the wind blowing through my hair and listen to the sound of the water crashing against the ship. My focus on the sea was soon broken when the captain came up and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
“Miss Delilah we have the ship to ourselves” He said turning me around in his arms. I looked up and couldn’t help but smile he had a dazzling smile and eyes as blue as the Caribbean Sea. He had sandy blonde hair to compliment the sea blue eyes and stubble on his chin and jaw line. Any girl would be lucky to know the captain let alone me intimate with him. I grabbed onto his leather jacket he was wearing and pulled him closer to me giving him a peck on the lips and then turning my attention back to my first true love, the sea.
“isn’t it beautiful” I sighed taking in the whole scene, the water reflecting the sun, all the ships in the harbor, and the foliage in the distance.
“Sometimes I think you love the sea more than you do me” The captain laughed.
“I love you just a little bit more” I turned and smiled up at him. My life was so different from how it used to be but I finally felt at home on this ship with this man and I hoped that it would never be taken away from me. After the captain finally got me away from the view of the water we headed down to the captains quarters where we snuggled into bed together. This was our normal routine when the ship made port, sneak away to the bedroom and relax together, sometimes we just laid there and talked other times we relived a little bit of tension. Today was one of those days where we decided to talk.
“Captain” I said rolling over onto my stomach and resting my head on my hands.
“Yes?” He responded.
“What’s your plan for life?” I asked not really knowing what answer I was going to get.
“Well when I was younger I always wanted to settle down and have a family, but then I figured out that not everyone is cut out for that kind of life and I wasn’t. So I decided to go to work and live on my own, I found myself working on a ship similar to the one we are on and worked my way up through the ranks. Eventually I became a captain and then I realized that it was my true calling to be out on the open water. Ever since then all I wanted to do was travel the world and see it’s wonders all while living free and without rules” He finished and glanced down at me.
“Any regrets?” I met his eyes.
“Only that I hadn’t met you before I went off on my own, I have a feeling that you would have been the right woman for me to settle down with” He smiled and leaned down to kiss me. I couldn’t help but think about my own family and where they were and how my son was doing, it had been so long since I had been home and seen him, “Something bothering you?” The captain asked.
“Oh, no just thinking about how nice it would have been” I smiled and layed my head down on his chest. When I awoke I was laying in my bunk and I sighed as I realized that everyone was back on board and the captain and I would have to go back to business as usual. I got up and stretched before trotting down to the kitchen to get the stew boiling. After putting the stew on I went up to the main deck to see if we had left the harbor or not, luckily we hadn’t so I decided to get off the ship and go down to the local market to look around. As I browsed the stands and such I kept getting the sensation that someone was watching me. I eventually turned around to find the mystery person to be none other than the captain.
“What are you doing out here?” He asked walking up to me as I turned back to look at some clothing.
“Browsing” I stated and continued to look.
“You’re mad at me aren’t you?” He asked touching my shoulder gently and turning me around.
“No, why would I be mad at you, you just took me back to my bunk before everyone got back and our whole love life has to be hidden from the crew because you are the captain and you can do better than the woman cook stow away” I turned back around so that he wouldn’t seen the hurt in my eyes.
“Delilah” He placed his hand on my shoulder again and I shrugged it off.
“I was fine with this in the beginning but I’m not anymore either you tell the crew and allow us to be together truthfully or I quit my job and leave” I turned and waited for him to choose.
“Delilah, don’t make me choose” He begged.
“The fact that you have to even think about this is disgusting, do you really love me?” I asked getting more frustrated than upset, after everything that had happened in my life I was accustomed to sadness and it no longer affected me.
“Stay” He said, just one word and not one that I wanted to here.
“Stay and be together, because just staying isn’t an option” I said forcefully. He sighed and looked around trying to think about his options.
“Stay” He paused, “and be together” He finally made eye contact with me and I could see that he was true about his decision. I smiled and hugged him so tightly I didn’t think I would ever let him go.

A few months went by and everything was cool and fine on the ship, the crew was fine with the relationship and the captain wasn’t ashamed to be with me, after all I was a trained lady. One day while docked in a harbor in England the captain came aboard with a young man about my age. He was tall and slender with dark brown hair and emerald green eyes and had a stance that demanded attention.
“Crew and Delilah this is Killian Jones and he is going to be aboard the ship for the next several months shadowing the crew and the job of a captain” The captain announced and I could tell that Killian was captain material he had the demeanor for it. After all the crew introductions the captain brought Killian over to me and introduced us.
“Killian Jones this is Delilah Shale she is the cook of the ship and my wife” Killian bowed his head and I tilted my head down as a sign of greeting. I glanced at the captain quickly in shock when he called me his wife before turning my attention back to Killian Jones.
“Very nice to meet you Miss Delilah” He said taking my hand and kissing it lightly.
“Nice to meet you as well Mr. Jones” I gave him a wide smile and let him be swept away by the captain as they took a tour of the ship. I watched as the newcomer and the man I loved walked away.

Present Day

“Delilah” I came back to reality and could hear someone snapping in my face and calling my name. I looked around to see Maddog sitting next to me on the main deck, “What on earth were you thinking about?” She asked.
“Oh nothing” I lied.
“that wasn’t nothing you were staring off into the abyss very intently” She pressed the issue.
“Well if you must know, I was thinking about my past and the first time I met the infamous Captain Hook, you know he was much more suave back then than he is now” I smiled thinking about the good old days.
“Ha, so you thought I was suave did you Love” Killian walked over to us as we were talking.
“Eavesdropping is not the way to win us over Hook” I glared up at him, “And no I did not think you were suave but every lady of the night thought you were” I smiled devilishly and laughed.
“Ah, yes the ladies of the night, I believe you might have been one of those once upon a time” He shot back and I stared at him in disbelief.
“Never in my life, now that was just insulting, I may be a pirate but I would never stoop to the level where I would have to pleasure you” I gave him one last hard look and walked to a different part of the deck so I could look out at the sea like usual.
