Calm never seemed to last long in the prison, and the shouting coming from outside was a stark reminder of that. Beth felt like she'd been waiting for minutes for Rick to say something when in reality it only took a few seconds for the commotion outside to interrupt them. She didn't even have time to really process what was going on.
She instinctively took a few steps forward to meet him, carefully but quickly taking Judith in her own arms. She couldn't help but hesitate, her mouth opening as though she was about to say something to him. There was no time. She had to take Judith to safety before the situation escalated.
Beth always seemed to go in the opposite direction of the fight. Sometimes she wished she could do more to help. She'd been trained, she knew how to handle walkers. When they first took the prison, she helped to clear the fences too... But now she had Judith to worry about. They had enough people outside, but they needed someone inside to protect her. That was exactly what Beth was going to do. She diverted from her path upstairs to stop in her own cell and sheath a knife into her boot. She had faith that the people outside would stop anything getting inside, but she wasn't going to take any chances.
Once she was in a cell upstairs, she carefully lay Judith down on the bed, calming her with gentle 'shushing' noises. Her next step was to secure the cell. None of them had keys to lock the doors, but Beth still pulled the door closed. She tied it shut with a bedsheet. It wasn't person proof, but it would be enough to stop any stray walkers pushing their way into the cell. She could hear Rick yelling outside; it was walkers, not people.
