Poppy is a bubbly girl, with personality to burn. As a junior in Northridge High, she floats between groups in school always wanting to be everybody friend. She is kind-hearted, however if you cross her you do not want to end up on her bad side. She is an overly-sensitive and empathetic person, the smallest of things can set her off.

Jamie is an 18 year old senior at Northridge. He plays baseball and likes to hang out with his friends in his free time. He’s very sweet and kind hearted, hates hurting others feelings, but at the same time he doesn’t deal with certain emotions all too well.

Poppy scratched her head gently as she walked down the corridor toward her locker. School was the last place she wanted to be today, she had felt so sick all morning and was certain her breakfast may make a reappearance at some point. Smiling kindly at everyone she knew who passed her, Poppy was relieved to arrive at her locker. She buried her head inside, closing her eyes gently. She figured she could just chill her til the first bell went off and she had to go to class. She had hoped to stay home since she felt so sick, but her mom reminded her that she was flunking out of History and couldn't afford to miss any more classes. Cursing herself for eating so much Ice cream late last night leading to this tummy ache, she lethargically began placing the books she needed in to her backpack.

Closing her locker door, Poppy leaned her back against it, the cool metal comforting against her warm skin. She smiled as she saw her best friend Jamie coming down the corridor towards her. She had been friends with Jamie, ever since she moved in next door to him when she was 5 and thought his treehouse was the coolest thing she had ever seen. Ever since middle school they had been inseparable, with Poppy, typically stubborn, refusing to let anything come between them. Even in 5th grade when Jamie had joined a little league team, poppy got fed up of being left alone for 2 hours every Saturday and decided to join to, resulting in her giving herself a concussion.

Jamie smiled whenever he saw Poppy. “Hey Pops, I’m good. How was your weekend?” He asked his best friend, after giving her a hug. “Missed you at my ball game Friday, guess you had something going on?” He asked as they walked down the hall to class.

Poppy grinned as she hugged him back, swallowing down that thick saliva feeling in her mouth from needing to vomit. "My Weekend was okay, nothing too eventful" she told him with a shrug, in all honesty she had spent most of it laying in bed watching 'Love Rosie' on netflix. "Oh J! I'm so sorry, it completely slipped my mind" Poppy admitted to him, stopping in the spot to offer him a sorry look. "I really haven't been feeling great the past few days, i was just in bed and i forgot I'm the worst friend" the pink haired girl gushed, her face flushing. She felt so bad, she never missed his games. "I promise I'll make it up to you how about dinner toni-" without even being able to finish her sentence, Poppy had to make a grab at the nearby trash can as she began to throw up.

After finishing, she looked up at Jamie sheepishly wiping her mouth on the sleeve of her hoodie. "Or maybe we could just hang out and watch a movie?" she suggested. She decided she would skip this class and go to the school nurse, just to make sure she didn't have anything contagious.

Jamie was waiting politely for her to stop talking so he could tell her it was okay but before either of them had a chance, Poppy dashed to the nearest trash can to throw up.

Jamie frowned, feeling bad for his friend. “Movies is fine,” He said and when she came back over, he placed the back of his arm against her forehead, “no fever. Are you feeling okay? I mean, is this the first time today you’ve thrown up?” He asked, deciding to walk her to the school nurse.

Poppy sniffled softly as they walked side by side down the corridor. "Yeah.. I mean, I've felt really sick all weekend, but that's the first time I've thrown up since Friday" she informed him, wrapping the hoodie tighter around herself as they stood outside the nurses office. "You can go to class if you like J, you dont need to wait around for me, it's probably just some bug" she said gently, hearing the nurse begin to bustle about inside as she came to get the door.

Jamie nodded. “Okay, text me and keep me informed?” He said and hugged her. “You know I worry about you, Pops.” He said, smoothing her pink hair down. “I’ll see you later though, okay?” He said before giving her one last smile. He turned and headed into the direction of his class.

Poppy laughed gently against his chest as he hugged her and nodded "Of course I will J, and I know you do,too much sometimes" she teased and gave his arm a friendly punch before entering the nurses office.

An hour later, Poppy emerged from the nurses office, her face ashen and red in splotches underneath her eyes. she felt sick to her stomach, and now she truly knew why. She had had to beg the nurse not to call her parents. Breathing deeply as she made her way outside she took out her phone and texted Jamie. "Can you give me a ride home, like now?" she sent him, walking towards the car park. her whole body shook out of the shock of the news the nurse had just told her.

Jamie was in his study hall, which meant he could freely leave school if he wanted too. He frowned whenever he got Poppy’s text and wondered what was wrong.

Yeah I’ll meet you by my car in five. he replied before gathering his things and going to his locker.

He wasn’t one for skipping school but Poppy seemed upset and he was going to figure out what was going on, even if it meant skipping the rest of the day.

When he got to his car and saw her, he frowned. “What’s the diagnosis?”

"just unlock the car please..." Poppy mumbled, her voice cracking. she sat in to the car and pulled her knees to her chest as she started to cry. she felt so embarrassed and ashamed, she was even afraid to tell Jamie. What if he thought she was some stupid slut? She took a deep breath, her chest heaving as she tried to work up the strength to tell him, her nails dug in to her kneecaps as she tried to calm herself down for even a minute.

"Jamie.. I'm pregnant" she eventually manged to squeeze out, unable to look at him, afraid to see the disappointment in his eyes. She was pretty sure she was about a month and a half along. She had had a casual thing going on with one of the other players on Jamie's football team, mostly just hooking up at parties, they had never even gone on an actual date and ended for that exact fact, Poppy had wanted to make it more serious and he didn't.

Jamie was shocked to hear that she was pregnant. “What? Are you serious?” He asked. He could tell by the look on her face she was. He frowned, “shit Pops, is it Evan’s?” He asked softly. That was the last guy he knew she hooked up with and if it was his, he wasn’t going to have anything to do with Poppy or the baby and it angered him.

Something inside of him told him he needed to step up and help her. He just wasn’t sure how she would feel about it.

Poppy gave a defeated nod, pressing her hands hard into her eyes trying to make herself stop crying. "You can't tell anyone okay? Especially not mine or your parents... I'm not sure what I'm gonna do J" she lay her forehead against his shoulder letting out a loud sigh. she was almost two months pregnant, that didn't give her much time to fuck about with.

"I can barely take care of myself Jamie... how am I meant to take care of a baby me? I mean should I tell him? should I get rid of it? should I put it up for adoption?" she spiralled on and on, her brain beginning to melt.

“I won’t tell anyone and no, Poppy; don’t get rid of it or put it up for adoption. Evan won’t be much help, knowing him, but you’ve got me. I’ll help you. We’ll raise the baby, somehow, we can do it, I know we can.” Jamie said and reached over, taking one of her hands in his. “I got you, Poppy.”

Poppy just looked at him, she was lost for words. "ahh... I, uhh.. I wouldn't expect that from you" she told him gently giving his hand a tight squeeze. "This is my mess J, I would hate to put all that stress on you". she sniffled softly and lay her head against him. It felt nice that he would be there for her no matter what.

"I'm scared J..." she whispered, leaving her head buried against him.

“I know but I’ll be there for you. Evan is a piece of shit and he’s not going to help you, but I will.” Jamie said and pulled off to the side so he could just hold her for a moment.

Poppy nodded, burrowing her way in close to his chest as he pulled over the car. She felt so lucky to have a friend like Jamie. "I still have to tell him though..." she whispered, leaving out a loud sigh. her eyes were stinging from tears and all she wanted was to climb in to bed, turn on netflix and never leave again.

“I’ll go with you, just in case.” Jamie said as he started the car up and started heading for her house again. “I’m going to skip the rest of the day and stay with you, okay?”

Poppy stayed silent the rest of the way home, simply nodding when he said he would stay with her for the rest of the day. Pulling up outside her house she was relieved that neither of her parents cars were in the driveway. She headed up to her bedroom knowing Jamie would follow. she sat down cross leged on the bed holding on to her stomach with both hands as her laptop started up.

"Theres's a person in there" she murmured as she rubbed her belly, looking up at jamie.

Jamie smiled. “Yes there is and they’re going to have an amazing mom.” He said, sitting down on the floor. “You’re going to be okay, Pops.”

Poppy looked down at her stomach shaking her head, she hadn't even begun to process it yet. "I'm gonna get fat" she moaned, and began typing in to google what she needed to be doing for the baby.
