Join a contest or two. Even if you lose people will see your name out there. I've entered several one-shot contests. It got me more readers on my other stories and even a few comments. It also helps to be active in the forums. Lots of people will see you if you post a lot.

I think the problem with getting comments is that everybody wants them, but only a few are willing to give them to others.
So if I read something I will always comment.

Let's start a comment revolution or something, just make it a habbit to give one comment after reading something, maybe you don't get any at first but I'm sure that you will make a huge amount of people happy that way.

^ Agreed. As they always say, "It's better to give, than to receive."

I write about Taking Back Sunday and The Color Fred a lot.
I have faithful readers and some of my stories/one shots have lots of comments but in all honesty, I get so happy with just having one comment because I write for myself, not for anyone else

I definitely agree with that. Often, if someone comments on my work, it gives me incentive to, at the least, check out their stories. I love that, because otherwise, I probably would never be exposed to that person's stories.

Joining in on the comment revolution. Maybe as well as commenting, we say something we like as well as constructive criticism - since I know the comments some people get are usually like 'great chapter, update soon!'.

    Maybe do this.

    1. Something you liked about the story [and why you liked it]
    2. Something that could be fixed [and why it needs to be fixed]
    3. Something about your overall impression

Then and only then...say something like 'can't wait for the next update. Don't beg for it. It's just as annoying, in my opinion, as the writer begging for comments.

    I'm in by the way.

Posting a comment on any story that you read, no matter how small, as long as it is a constructive or meaningful comment.

Update a lot. It gets you on the story list more often.

Good summaries and first chapters usually draw me in; make it something captivating that leaves people wondering.
Titles too; they leave the first impression.
I know many people say they don't matter, but a nice, readable layout is excellent, even if it's plain. Don't use eye-popping colors, especially for the text. There are pre-made ones, but you might like to customize your story a bit more.

Posting on the boards a lot does help, too, especially on these threads.

A readable layout always draws me in.
As well as a readable story, aka minimal spelling/grammar mistakes.

I've also noticed that stories with sex in it always has 10 stars and heaps of comments.
