I'm a server/host at a pretty nice, local Italian restaurant. I make $2.13 an hour serving and $5.00 and hour hosting, but I get tips on both. When I serve I usually make around $50-70 a night and $15+ on lunches, and when I host I usually make around $1o and up in tips. Hosting tips fluctuate a lot since they're based on a percentage of the server's total sales of the shift. At my old serving job I made $3.25 an hour waitressing and $7.25 running, which is basically the same as bussing. Made at least $60 a night there, and often made over $100.
My job now though is kinda meh. I seriously love serving - it's easy, and you can make a ton of money only working 4 hours a day - but the way the restaurant I work at now is kinda messed up. When I do doubles serving, I won't actually get paid the serving wage because I make too much in tips. And, since I double as a host and server, the difference in the pay scale plus my tips has screwed my actual paycheck up on several occasions. Another shitty part of working in a nice restaurant is that it's expensive. I have people ask me a lot if I've tried a dish, what's in it, blah blah blah, and then I feel incredibly stupid when I can't explain it to them, because even with my discount it's usually too expensive for me to get food there. Another thing many customers don't realize is that almost all my wages are based on their tips. Personally, I don't think anything under $7 in a high end restaurant is acceptable, but everyone tips based on different aspects.
The biggest - and WORST - part of serving, as hinted at before, is that some people are just complete jackasses. I can tell instantly by how a guest treats and talks to me if they've ever served or worked in a restaurant before. The people that are understanding and patient when it's hectic obviously have; the people that expect to be treated like they're the only people in the restaurant and want me to be at their table virtually every second have not. It's not often that I get someone that's exceptionally rude, but when it happens they are incredibly bad and mean about it. Some people do it because they want an excuse to not tip well, but when I sense a table is going to do that, I'm honestly just rude right back to them. And then there's some people that are just downright rude for no reason. So, yeah. It's generally good money, and the people I work with are awesome and I love them all to death, but because of how it's run and some of the idiot customers I get, it can really suck sometimes.
