I loved that. I love how Alex is jealous, I think is the best way to put it, of Kyle and Caleb.
I'm interested to see how the math project goes.... =D

“You mean the fact that he’s adopted?”

But Jack doesn’t get to finish his sentence. He spots the girl of his dreams – Shannon – only a few feet ahead of them and suddenly he’s rushing to catch up to her.

Zack, I know you’re perfectly capable of doing it on your own, but I’m not going to budge on this.”

Miss Verde smiles sympathetically, and then her land on Alex who’s standing in the doorway.

“Hi Alex,” she says.

Zack turns to him, wide eyed, caught red-handed.

“Maybe he thinks that you’re going to eat him.”

*giggles*

“Alex,” Jack scolds, “He’s not ‘strange’. You don’t know a thing about him.”

Jack kinda acts like the mother of the group, so far at least. :D

“He likes Kyle,” Joel states.

“Let’s…let’s just go to class,” Joel mumbles, pushing past Rian and Alex to get into the classroom.

Does Joel like Caleb?
*ponders on that*

“Maybe we’re being ridiculous – They’re friends,” Alex says, looking at Rian for reassurance.

“Right…” Rian trails off, almost as if he’s not quite convinced. “But whatever. Even if he is gay, it wouldn’t matter at all.”

Alex nods. “Yeah, of course. He’s our best friend.”

“Exactly. Now let’s go ace this stupid test.”

Seeing Caleb with Kyle makes Alex’s mind wander. While he’s taking the test, he can’t help but think about what it would be like. Of course, he’s not a homophobe, and he would never treat Kyle any differently.

Suddenly, he’s questioning everything.

I love that part!

Hmm.
It looks like Alex has quite a few things he needs to figure out, in addition to his math project.

So, with the idea that he needs to be prepared for something – what, exactly, he can’t be sure – he makes sure to pick out something extra nice to wear to school. After dressing, he stares at himself in the full length mirror and shrugs. Even though he’s wearing his brand new skinnies and a tighter than usual t-shirt, he still looks the same as he always does.

I hate getting those days!
It makes me feel so paranoid.

If Alex is being honest, he’ll admit that he’s slightly terrified of Benji Madden, though Joel swears he’s as scary as a kitten.

“Does your brother ever study for anything?” Rian asks, turning around in his seat.

“Sometimes.”

“Why would we know where you put it?” Alex asks his forgetful friend. He pulls out his math notebook out of his bag and hands it over to Caleb. “Just copy mine.”

Caleb grins. “I swear, one day I’m going to be completely organized.”

Joel groans, “We already tried that once, Caleb. I don’t recall it working.”

“Well, that was when we were in like, 11th grade-”

“That as just a few months ago.”

“Don’t interrupt me while I’m trying to defend myself and copy Alex’s work at the same time. You know I can’t multitask well, jerk.”

I got a bit of deja vu from this.
At the beginning of 11th grade, this year, I swore to myself I was going to be organized.
Worked until second period.
:P

“Whatever,” Alex finally says, “Leave him alone. The kids got a tough time as it is without you two stalking his life.”

But stalking is so much fun!

“I can always tell Benji to work with you,” Joel suggests as he leans against Jack’s car after school.

“No, it’s okay,” Alex responds a bit too quickly, “He probably has a partner,” he adds. “I’ll find someone.”

CHICKEN!

Before Alex can even respond, Zack is walking away towards the guest parking lot. The funny feeling in his stomach is gone almost immediately. But, as he watches Zack walk away, he can’t help but feel slightly concerned for the boy, even though he’s used to his quietness and self-consciousness. Something’s off about him today and Alex finds himself wishing he knew what it was.

And the plot begins...
